The Daily Express group has been ordered to pay £375,000 to seven friends of the McCann Family, whose daughter Madeleine went missing in Portugal in May 2007 and has not been seen since, for printing untrue statements about them. The papers, including the Daily Express itself, the Sunday Express and Daily Star, claimed that the Portuguese police had identified them as suspects and suggested that they had covered up facts and misled the authorities. In March, the papers printed a front-page apology to Madeleine McCann's parents for printing similar stories about them. The BBC are calling the payout huge; the fact is that, although it may be substantial to the recipients (even divided up between the seven of them, as the reports seem to suggest), is a drip in the ocean compared to the Spew's turnover - it is probably the sort of thing their insurance would cover and their premiums will go up next year; that will hurt (a bit). No doubt if the victims of the libel had been rich and famous, the Express would have had to pay them more. I think that papers which make their money this way should face crippling sanctions, including the suspension of their circulation, including when they print sensational stories whipping up public hostility to Muslims, Gypsies or any other minority. ... The Dubliners are an Irish folk band founded in 1962. The Dubliners formed in 1962. They made a name for themselves playing regularly in O'Donoghue's Pub in Dublin. Initially known as "The Ronnie Drew Group", the founding members were Ronnie Drew, Luke Kelly, Ciaran Bourke and Barney McKenna. The change of name came about due to Drew's unhappiness with the name, coinciding with the fact that Kelly was reading Dubliners by James Joyce at the time. Drew spent some time in Spain in his younger years where he learned to play Flamenco guitar, and he accompanied his songs on a Spanish guitar. His gravelly voice has been compared to a cement mixer and the sound of coke being crushed under a door, it is instantly recognizable. Drew left the band in 1974 to spend more time with his Family, to be replaced by Jim McCann. He returned to the Dubliners five years later, but left the group again in 1995. Ronnie Drew passed away at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Dublin on 16th August 2008 after a long illness. Paddy Reilly took Drew's place in 1995. Some of his most significant contributions to the band are the hit single "Seven Drunken Nights", his rendition of "Finnegan's Wake", and "McAlpine's Fusiliers". 6,200 brokers take Merrill Lynch's retention deal Merrill Lynch & Co. said 99 percent of its top-selling brokers agreed to sign a retention package to keep them at the firm after its sale to Bank of America Corp. More than 6,200 brokers accepted Bank of America's offer, including 99.3 percent of those who generated annual revenue of more than $1.75 million, said Robert McCann, chief of the brokerage unit. About 6,600 brokers who generated more than $500,000 were eligible for bonuses that range from 50 percent to 100 percent of annual production and pay out over seven years. “We did a good job of putting together a transition award package that was fair and appropriate,” McCann, a 26-year Merrill Lynch veteran, said in an interview. Bank of America Chief Executive Officer Ken Lewis, 61, sought to limit departures in Merrill's brokerage ranks after agreeing in September to buy the New York-based securities firm. Bank of America separately offered deferred cash awards, payable over three years, to about half its 1,965 brokers who will join the Merrill network. Virtually all of the eligible brokers accepted, bank spokesman Scott Silvestri said. Patricia Eagan was well known and loved in the Hingham community for her warmth, kindness, and sense of humor. Eagan, 49, a Harvest Lane resident, lost her life in a car accident in Plymouth Tuesday morning. Her Family, her many friends, and the Hingham High School community are mourning her loss. Eagan had worked at the high school for the past year and a half as a secretary. “We are sad and devastated over Patti’s death. She was a wonderful person and an integral part of the school,” said Principal Paula Girouard-McCann. “Patti was really the face of Hingham High School – the first person you saw when you checked in at the front office in the morning or when a visitor came by. She greeted everyone so happily and so nicely. I don’t know what we will do without her.” McCann shared the sad news by email to the school community Tuesday morning. High school staff and students were also notified, and counselors were available for those who needed support. McCann asked those who knew Eagan to keep her and her Family in their thoughts and prayers. High school senior Abby Nestor said Eagan was “probably the most amazing person in the world. She was funny, warm, and definitely witty. As we mourn her not being here, let’s also think about how different our lives would have been without her,” she said. Jayne Skinner, secretary to the principal, said she was “just glad we at least knew her rather then never meeting her. We think of these k ... Source: www.bizcommunity.com --- 30 days ago

Publishers of the British tabloids the Daily & Sunday Express & the Daily Star - agreed today to pay out 'substantial' libel damages to the so-called 'Tapas Seven' - a group of friends who had dined with the Family of the missing British toddler Madeleine McCann on the night of her disappearance in May last year. The newspaper group agreed to pay the seven £375,000 pounds to the seven, who were holidaying with the McCanns in Portugal last year, and publish a front-page apology for appearing to suggest they could have been involved in a supposed cover-up. At first blush, it would look like the mis-reporting of the McCann case has been a costly affair for British newspapers, and in particular the Express Group papers which pursued the story unremittingly, even when there was little new to report. In July, 11 papers (including the Express group ones) agreed to pay out a substantial six-figure sum to a British businessman, Robert Murat, who had been named a police suspect in the case, and two of his associates. And four months earlier, the Express Group paid out £550,000 to the McCanns, who (as the Tapas Seven are reportedly intending also) paid the money into a fund dedicated to furthering the search for their missing daughter. All accepted that the basis of the 'reports' was rumour, not fact. Some media commentators now are saying this latest payout is proof of punishment for shoddy journalism. The new year will see the UK parliamentary body, the House of Commons , launch an inquiry into press standards, privacy and libel laws. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee is accepting submissions, opinions and views on key topics affecting the press. How the media in the UK handled the tragic case of missing Madeleine McCann is expected to be a priority. There have been allegations of overly aggressive reporting and newspapers have been sued by the Family and friends of the McCanns. Other key topics for discussion include: * UK libel laws and press reporting. * Do conditional fee agreements impact press freedom and should self-regulation be toughened. * Contempt of Court laws with respect to press reporting. * Impact of European Convention on Human Rights. * Should financial penalties for libel or invasion of privacy be exemplary rather than compensatory. * Is the balance between press freedom and personal privacy right. McCann Erickson and MRM cast Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning in this new TV and Web push for World MasterCard. Manning visits hotels in rival cities where the Colts play this season. In each, he trades on his "nice guy" persona, interpreting the hostility of staffers in positive ways. In Boston, a hotel operator warns Manning that he's "going down," and the QB replies that indeed he is—to the fourth floor for a massage. The Colts edged the Patriots 18-15 on Sunday, so that rubdown worked wonders. He should just snap "No tip!" to these bellicose bellhops. There's a microsite where consumers with nothing better to do can send friends and Family a customized "video pep talk" from Manning. He covers his mouth when the recipient's name is dubbed into the message. Frankly, it's tough to make out what he's saying much of the time.
