From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli CAPE CANAVERAL, FL -- Obama said today that he doesn’t think the notion that he is arrogant -- advanced this week by the McCain campaign in TV ads and Web videos -- has stuck in the American psyche, challenging that while the Republicans are good at negative campaigning, they fail when it comes to governing. He also responded to questions of race in the campaign, saying the McCain campaign was not "racist," but "cynical." “That's why, if you think about this week, what they've been good at is distraction,” Obama told reporters at a press conference this morning. “You've got statistics saying we've lost another 50,000 jobs. That Florida's in recession for the first time in a decade and a half. And what was being talked about were Paris and Britney. And so they're clever on creating distractions from the issues that really matter in people's lives.” But perceptions matter, and Obama was asked how he could fight the view that he’s being arrogant or presumptuous. “You know, I don't know that there's that perception,” he said. “That's something that's being fed to the media by them... And I think what would be useful is to ask the question, what's this based on?... If I was presumptuous or taking this for granted, I wouldn't be working this hard this week. I'm beat.” Later, Obama actually repeated Republican attack lines of the past few weeks, point by point. And he signaled that he would not be tempted to go ... Filed under: John McCain , Race Here's a follow-up to a story I posted a few days ago. John McCain's campaign has formally apologized to a black newspaper reporter who was summarily removed from a press area last Friday. Heres more from the paper where the reporter works: Senior Writer Stephen Price, asked to leave an area restricted to national reporters while other state reporters remained, got a personal apology from McCain's campaign Tuesday evening. Price was the lone black reporter among the media in the area at a Panama city rally on Friday. Price and the paper have accepted the McCain Camp's apology, but still wonder why, and who, directed the Secret Service agent to toss the reporter from the proceedings in the first place: "It's the right thing for the McCain campaign to do," Gabordi [Bob, Executive Editor of the Tallahassee Democrat] said. "Our issue remains with the Secret Service agent. His actions are still a problem. The senator's campaign has done the right thing and we appreciate that." So, the question remains, why did the Secret Service agent, after reviewing Price's press credentials, single him out for removal? Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments ... Virginia Rep. Eric Cantor, the chief deputy minority whip in the House, has been asked by the McCain campaign for personal documents so they can look into the possibility of Cantor becoming McCain's running mate, the Associated Press reports. Cantor and the McCain campaign wouldn't comment on the report, but the AP says a "Republican familiar with the conversations between Cantor and the McCain campaign said Cantor has been asked to turn over documents," though the source did not have specifics. Cantor has been a strong McCain surrogate during the campaign, often offering harsh words about presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He is a pro-business representative from Virginia - a key swing-state and the home of potential Obama running mate Tim Kaine - though he is largely unknown outside the state. Cantor, who is Jewish, has been a strong supporter of Israel. He is well liked by conservatives, a group McCain has had trouble shoring up. ...
