It's been a busy 24 hours out there, with the debut of two new ads and two web videos from the McCain campaign and a new ad from the Obama campaign. Here's the rundown of the three ads that the campaigns say will appear on television: The McCain camp released a spot this morning called "Jim Johnson," which the campaign says will be "televised nationally." The ad spotlights the former Fannie Mae CEO who had to resign from his position as head of Obama's vice presidential search team after criticism of his favorable mortgage deal from Countrywide Financial. The spot shows Obama saying "It would be unacceptable for executives of these institutions to earn a windfall," as an announcer argues that Obama's words don't match his deeds. "Meet Jim Johnson, former Fannie Mae CEO," the announcer says. "Fannie cooked the books and Johnson made millions. Then Obama asked him to pick his VP. And raise thousands for his campaign. Barack Obama. More empty words." That spot comes on the heels of another, similar McCain spot pushing a (dubious) connection between Obama and former Fannie Mae Chairman Frank Raines. That spot, "Advice," was released Thursday night, and it has prompted questions over whether the McCain camp is playing the race card by pushing a questionable link between Raines, who is black, and Obama. "Obama has no background in economics," an announcer says in the spot. "Who advises him? The Post says it's Franklin Raines, for 'advice on ... Source: www.pbs.org --- 28 days ago

When Politico's Ryan Grim approached Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) after the evening of the Senate bailout vote, the reporter didn't even get his question out. "Excuse me, you're bothering me," McCain said. It was a surprising rebuke from a politician who once was famous for palling around with reporters, and who was so media-friendly that he was sometimes known as "the senator from 'Meet the Press.'" But what friends call "grumpy McCain" is showing up regularly on the campaign trail, and several top Advisers worry that it's hurting his campaign by making him appear peevish and hunkered down when the country is looking for a larger and more optimistic brand of leadership. More on John McCain ... Source: adage.com --- 20 days ago

It looks like John McCain's foreign policy Advisers are back in the news -- and not in a good way. Yesterday, McCain issued a statement urging the Bush administration to enlarge a $6 billion package of military equipment for Taiwan, announced earlier this week. McCain wants submarines and F-16 aircraft added to the package. But as the Washington Post notes , the lobbying firm run by Randy Scheunemann, McCain's top foreign policy adviser, in June renewed a $200,00 contract to lobby on behalf of Taiwan. And in 2005, Scheunemann had personally signed the original contract between his firm, Orion Strategies, and the Taiwanese government. (Scheunemann took a leave of absence from the firm to work on McCain's campaign.) The Post reports: The McCain campaign did not respond to a request for comment on whether Randy Scheunemann, his foreign policy coordinator, had a role in drafting the statement or if he had recused himself. But that's not the only potential conflict of interest here. As Think Progress points out , Scheuenemann has also lobbied for Lockheed Martin, which makes the F-16s that make McCain wants to give to Taiwan. And here's something else worth noting. Another McCain foreign policy adviser , Bruce Jackson, is a former Lockheed vice president. Jackson is a close Scheunemann ally, who was at Lockheed until 2002, during the period when, according to Senate disclosure forms, Scheuenemann lobbied for the arms contractor. The t ... As noted here and elsewhere, the words "William Ayers" appeared nowhere in yesterday's debate, despite the fact that the McCain campaign hinted for days that McCain would go hard at Obama's associations. Now Politico reports that McCain Advisers are privately indicating that Ayers, and Obama's pastor, Jeremiah Wright, may be off the table for good : After days of attempts to persuade voters that Obama's ties to '60s radical Bill Ayers are a crucial character issue, McCain didn't mention Ayers' name during the 90 minutes of Tuesday's forum. His top aides suggested afterward that, going forward, the candidate wouldn't focus on the former domestic terrorist nor invoke the name of Obama's controversial pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. If it's really true that the McCain team is holstering this pistol, it suggests that the McCain campaign's internal polling on how the Ayers stuff is playing is just brutal, likely among independents. It also suggests that Obama's counter-attack -- lambasting McCain's campaign for wanting to change the subject from the economy to personal attacks -- has been effective. Also: No more hits on Ayers or Wright will make for a lot of disappointed conservatives. All that said, whether or not Ayers comes up again, the McCain campaign hasn't stopped with its strategy of painting Obama as a risky and vaguely sinister unknown. The campaign released an ad this morning asking, "who is Barack Obama?," and concluding ... Source: www.bignewsnetwork.com --- 30 days ago
