ST. PAUL, Minn. — John McCain, a POW turned political rebel, vowed Thursday night to vanquish the “constant partisan rancor” that grips Washington as he launched his fall campaign for the White House. “Change is coming,” he promised the roaring Republican National Convention and a prime-time television audience. From NBC/NJ's Matthew Berger and Carrie Dann BETHLEHEM, Penn. – Cindy McCain and Sarah Palin went after Barack Obama’s lack of Military Service Wednesday, with both women making personal appeals as mothers of sons serving overseas. “The day that Sen. Obama decided to cast a vote to not fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body,” Cindy McCain said at a joint McCain-Palin rally at Lehigh University. “I would suggest that Sen. Obama change shoes with me for just one day. And see what it means, and see what it means to have a loved one serving in the Armed Forces, and more importantly serving in harm’s way.” Both McCain and Obama have opposed Senate measures with troop funding attached. Obama voted against a troop-funding bill in May 2007 because it did not contain language calling for a timetable for withdrawal from Iraq. McCain opposed, but did not vote, on a troop-funding measure earlier that year that did call for a withdrawal timeline, a position with which he vigorously disagrees. ...( read more ) ... BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Republican John McCain’s Military history is famous, but the Service of his sons is less well known. And until recently, that’s exactly how the presidential candidate and his wife, Cindy, wanted it. With their national convention back on track on Tuesday night after being derailed by Hurricane Gustav, Republicans hammered home the second night’s theme of “Service” by emphasizing John McCain’s Service in the Military, including his five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. It's just one factor that voters consider, history has shown. Even heroism is no guarantee. Military Service is perhaps the most powerful theme of John McCain's presidential campaign: Veterans sporting their caps and pins fill the audiences, running mate Sarah Palin cites McCain's prisoner-of-war years in introducing him, and during the recent Republican convention, men draped in medals and ribbons graced the stage while larger-than-life photos of McCain in uniform served as a backdrop. ... Cindy McCain used a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Wednesday to launch her most severe attack on Barack Obama to date. McCain, who had previously shown little inclination to use her son's Military Service as a weapon against the Democratic nominee, suggested that he had let down the McCain boys by voting against funding for the troops. This is not a new attack against Obama -- John McCain accused him of the same thing during their first debate, and in an ad as well -- but this time the charge was reframed in more emotional terms. "I'm a blue-star mom, just like Gov. Palin is," Cindy McCain said. "I'm proud of my sons, but let me tell you, the day that Sen. Obama decided to cast a vote to not fund my son when he was serving sent a cold chill through my body. "I would suggest that Sen. Obama change shoes with me for just one day, and see what it means to have a loved one serving in the armed forces, and more importantly, serving in harm's way. I suggest he take a day and go watch our fine young men and women deploy, get on those buses and leave with a smile and a charge." While the suggestion that Obama try on McCain's heels -- a sartorial decision that might further alienate the fabled "Joe Sixpacks" across America -- cannot reasonably be interpreted as a suggestion that Obama send his young daughters to Iraq, it can certainly be seen as part of the McCain camp's "Obama doesn't understand" offensive. President Bush and Joe Lieberman tell the convention that McCain has always put country above party. Fred Thompson attacks Barack Obama's policies and experience. UPDATE : Radar reports that the Secret Service is investigating the potential threat against Barack Obama at a Sarah Palin rally: The Secret Service is following up on media reports today that someone in the crowd at a McCain/Palin event suggested killing Barack Obama, according to Secret Service spokesman Malcolm Wiley. The shout of "kill him" followed a Sarah Palin rant on Obama's relationship with radical Chicagoan Bill Ayers. Wiley says the Secret Service did not begin looking into the matter until press reports, namely Dana Milbank's article in the Washington Post, surfaced today, because no agents at the event heard anything. "The Secret Service did not hear any threatening statements directed at targets under its protection and no threatening statements were reported to us by law enforcement or citizens at the event," Wiley told Radar. Also unclear: whether the remark was directed at Obama or Ayers if the words were actually "kill" and "him." In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed "treason!" during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing U.S. troops. "[Obama] said, too, that our troops in Afghanistan are 'air raiding villages and killing civilians,'" Palin said, mischaracterizing a 2007 remark by Obama. "I hope Americans know that is not what our brave men and women in uniform are doing in Afghanistan. The U.S. Military is fighting terr ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 3 days ago
Dear Senator McCain, I'm writing to ask that you return to your senses, and to the conscience that I truly believe you have. You have a wealth of well-deserved admiration out here in voter country -- for your Military Service, and for your subsequent long Service in government. You have an immense depth of sympathy and recognition for those years you spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. You have proved yourself, at times, the maverick you now claim to be at every opportunity -- but, alas, no longer seem to be. You have been well-loved and well respected. I believe that Senator Biden means it from his heart when he tells us how much he values your friendship. But in recent weeks you have lost track of that admirable person -- at least insofar as I can determine from what I read and hear. You sacrificed a great deal in the tooth-and-nail scramble for the Republican nomination. Once there, it would have been the moment to pause, to have taken a good look about you, and to have read the mood of the American public -- all of us, not just your "base." Your convention would have been an excellent moment to call for a unity of vision for America. Instead, you played to the lowest common denominator with your divisive appeal to "Country First" -- with its strong implication that the slogan excluded all those who did not agree with you. You played on false patriotism at the cost of honesty and inclusiveness. Worse, you selected as your r ... Source: www.care2.com --- 3 days ago

In blog posts over the past few weeks I've made reference to various campaign ads featuring veterans who support either Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain. They contain powerful imagery and messages: veterans of Iraq, Afghanistan, and past wars -- including some who are wounded -- talk about their frontline experiences and deride the opposing candidate for his platforms on Iraq and/or domestic veterans issues. No matter which candidate is being supported in an ad there are common threads that appear as the veterans speak of their Service, yet at some point messages divide and the criticism begins. According to Gallup polls , present and former members of the Military historically vote along Republican lines. At the same time various pro-Obama groups are vocal over what they see as McCain's substandard record on veterans issues. Both candidates have count support among veterans. Remember that moment during the first debate when each candidate referenced a bracelet he wore to remember fallen soldiers. The important thing to note here is that while veterans can be seen as a group with a unique shared experience, their views are as widespread and nuanced as that of any American. Below is a collection of eight video advertisements featuring veterans as they promote their chosen presidential candidate. Watching them all in succession gives an interesting look at how they draw in their combat Service as they promote either McCain or Obam ... Source: talkingpointsmemo.com --- 7 hours ago
Frank Schaeffer , writing in the Baltimore Sun ... John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence. At a Sarah Palin rally, someone called out, "Kill him!" At one of your rallies, someone called out, "Terrorist!" Neither was answered or denounced by you or your running mate, as the crowd laughed and cheered. At your campaign event Wednesday in Bethlehem, Pa., the crowd was seething with hatred for the Democratic nominee - an attitude encouraged in speeches there by you, your running mate, your wife and the local Republican chairman. Shame! John McCain: In 2000, as a lifelong Republican, I worked to get you elected instead of George W. Bush. In return, you wrote an endorsement of one of my books about Military Service. You seemed to be a man who put principle ahead of mere political gain. You have changed. You have a choice: Go down in history as a decent senator and an honorable Military man with many successes, or go down in history as the latest abettor of right-wing extremist hate. ...
