McCain’s Campaign Team Disses Sarah Palin In Vanity Fair Piece

Filed under: Republicans , John McCain , Sarah Palin , 2012 President In the wake of Vanity Fair's scathing exposé detailing tensions between Sarah Palin and many former staffers to John McCain during the '08 presidential campaign, CBS News has obtained an e-mail exchange between Palin and high-level McCain advisers reinforcing the perception that the relationship was anything but harmonious. The subject of the e-mails was the then-growing controversy about whether Palin's husband, Todd, had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party , a group that advocated the state's secession from the union. More broadly, the e-mail chain highlights the tension between the governor and McCain's campaign brain trust over the Palin family image. Todd Palin was a member of the Alaska Independence Party from 1995 to 2002, and Sarah Palin delivered a pre-recorded message to the party's 2008 convention. However, when Salon.com and, later, CNN ran stories examining this history, the governor shot off the following message to McCain chief strategist Steve Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis and senior adviser Nicole Wallace: "Pls get in front of that ridiculous issue that's cropped up all day today--two reporters, a protester's sign, and many shout-outs all claiming Todd's involvement in an anti-American Political party. It's bull, and I don't want ot have to keep reacting to it...Pls have a statement given on this so it's just put to bed." As CBS ...

President Obama has stared down the North Koreans and won . . . or something. Recall that two weeks ago, the White House sent the guided-missile destroyer USS John McCain to chase down a North Korean tramp steamer, the MV Kang Nam 1, thought to be carrying missile parts or maybe (hopefully) nuclear weapons material. The excuse to get nasty with the North Koreans: a U.N. Security Council resolution punishing them for their atomic and missile tests. The U.N. said it was OK to stop any North Korean ship under suspicion. Stop it and ask to board for an inspection, but without using force.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

While the elitist #dickwhisperers at the Washington Post dream up ways of monetizing their "access," let's take a trip down memory lane to shortly 4AM Eastern time on September 1, 2008, less than 72 hours after John McCain announced Sarah Palin would be his VP. At a quarter-past the hour, Daily Kos diarist Liz Arnett posted a diary featuring several videos tying Sarah Palin to the Alaskan Independence Party, a pro-secession fringe group in Alaska. The diary rocketed up the rec. list and a few hours later, georgia10 followed up with a front page post summarizing the questions raised by Palin's apparent connections. Later that day, the story was picked up by reporters at ABC, The Atlantic, and TPM. They fleshed out some of the important details: it was Todd, not Sarah, who was actually a member of the party, they found, but Sarah had addressed the AIP and members of the AIP felt Sarah was sympathetic to their pro-secession cause. Flash-forward six weeks, and Salon published a detailed article by Max Blumenthal and David Neiwert showing the tight connections between the Palins and the secessionists, attracting CNN's interest. That brings us to today. In a gripping new article , CBS News' Scott Conroy and special contributor Shushannah Walshe explain what happened next: On the morning of Oct. 15, Palin was aboard her campaign jet and en route to New Hampshire when she happened to catch a disparaging CNN segment that touted the Salon.c ...

Not a photoshop Sarah "Petty Mouth" Palin: A great frustration I had during the campaign was when the McCain staff wouldn't carve out time for me to go for a run. The days never went as well if I couldn't get out there and sweat. So let's get this straight: Sarah Palin thinks she's ready to be President of the United States of America, and she couldn't even get her own campaign's scheduling staff to give her enough time to run? And also too, if she really didn't have enough time to run, how did she find the time to take that prank call from Nicholas Sarkozy? She's great at pointing fingers every which way except her own. Or at least she thinks she's great...because as David Shuster points out, the flip side of her comment is that Sarah Palin has now finally admitted what made her so insane during the 2008 campaign: ...

The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign. At issue is a question that was never resolved following McCain's loss in November: Who in the McCain campaign was secretly trashing Sarah Palin to the press? After being forwarded some explosive emails from inside the McCain campaign, I spoke to various campaign officials -- including a central figure in the current controversy -- to better understand what's happening here. But first, this requires some unpacking. The best summation of the fallout from the VF piece is this Politico story by Jonathan Martin. In a nutshell, the controversy centers on this sentence from the VF profile: "Some top aides worried about her mental state: was it possible that she was experiencing postpartum depression? (Palin's youngest son was less than six months old.)" Yesterday on The Weekly Standard's blog, Bill Kristol fingered that anonymous top aide making speculative assessments about Sarah Palin's mental state: "In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin's mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt." Schmidt, who headed up day-to-day operations for the McCain campaign, angrily denied the accusation to Jonathan Martin. However, Randy Scheunemann, a top foreign-policy adviser to the McCain campaign, backed up Kristol's claim saying Schmidt has "a congenital aversion to the t ...

by Mark Silva Todd Purdum's piece about Sarah Palin in Vanity Fair has ripped a Band-Aid off the wounds of the McCain-Palin campaign, and it's not a pretty sight: Politico tells the McCainPalin-camp in-and-out-flighting tale: William Kristol, editor of the Weekly Standard and an informal adviser to Palin, complained publicly about a Purdum passage in Vanity Fair's August issue about "some top aides" who had worrie about the Alaska governor's "mental state" during the 2008 campaign, suggesting the Alaska governor may be suffering from post-partum depression following the birth of her son Trig. "In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin's mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt," Kristol wrote. Schmidt's reply, via Politico : "I'm sure John McCain would be president today if only Bill Kristol had been in charge of the campaign... "Categorically false,'' Schmidt added: "His allegation that I was defaming Palin by alleging post-partum depression at the campaign headquarters is categorically untrue. In fact, I think it rises to the level of a slander because it's about the worst thing you can say about somebody who does what I do for a living." But wait: Randy Scheunemann, a longtime foreign policy adviser to McCain and close Kristol, tells Politico : ...

I have been a bit exhausted by most of this post-post-postmortem of the McCain campaign, relitigating old divisions that only really matter now on the off-off-off chance that Sarah Palin is the Republican standard bearer in three years.
