Last week we fawned over Mazda’s redesigned 2010 Mazda3 sedan. Now the company is showing off the hatchback version online ahead of the car’s official unveiling in Bologna, Italy, next week. As in the previous generation, the hatchback comes only with the top engine offered for the sedan, which in this case is a 167-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder. The hatch looks good, but with only two shots that partially show the rear end, it’s hard to tell if it’ll be as attractive as the sedan. Check out more photos below and let us know what you think. Mazda has released a few images of its new 2010 Mazda3 five-door hatchback, which is scheduled to be shown for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show. From the front view the car looks largely the same as the sedan that was launched at L.A. European buyers can look forward to the option of Mazda’s 2.2-liter turbodiesel in addition to the range of gas burning engines, with the new oil-burner set to comply with the new Euro Stage5 regulations in addition to offering improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions over the outgoing 2.0-liter diesel. As I left the 2009 Los Angeles auto show early last Friday morning, I couldn’t get the completely redesigned 2010 Mazda3 out of my head. Mazda is at the top of its game with redesigns of both the Mazda6 and the Mazda3 blazing a trail for their entire lineup to look uniform and sophisticated, without being almost identical and boring (sorry Porsche). The radical new look Mazda is putting into the headlights, front grilles, taillights and rear ends of their new Mazda6 and Mazda3 has taken the full-size and midsize sedans on a much needed turn in terms of design direction. The use of similar lines along the hood, similar headlight assemblies and similar fender contours give the Mazda3 a look of upscale nobility, while retaining an individual appearance when looking at the car in its entirety.
