After varying reactions to the Beverly Farms Horribles Parade, a neighborhood parade that used obscene floats and posters to mock pregnant Gloucester teenagers, and the Salem Willows parade which also found humor in the girls’ situation, the Mayors of the three cities got together Monday and signed the following statement: The Mayors of Beverly, Gloucester and Salem met today in Gloucester to underscore the close relationship of our communities. We all share the same problems. Teenage pregnancies know no geographic or social boundaries. The recent focus on teen pregnancies in Gloucester which was portrayed in the July 4th parades was most unfortunate, completely misplaced and in very bad taste. No doubt there are folks in all our communities and especially in Gloucester who have, with justification, been very offended. We three have met today to reinforce our strong personal relationship and our ongoing regional perspective. We will not allow the unauthorized activities of a few very misguided persons to speak for our communities. We respect all of our residents in each of our communities. As we stand as good neighbors, we ask the residents of each community to do the same. We will continue to work together for the benefit of all the residents of our Cities and, indeed, for the benefit of the entire North Shore.
