Mayor Bloomberg braved it out onstage today beside a hand puppet and Young Frankenstein 's benighted monster to make clear that — while our mass-transit system implodes and high-density new neighborhoods like Hudson Yards seem beyond our reach — New York City leads in symbolic announcements of marginal steps to avoid climate disaster. Today, Broadway theaters and shows staged a hoo-hah at the Eugene O'Neill Theater, where they promised to switch to compact fluorescent bulbs, use ecofriendly sets, and make recycling bins easier to find during intermission. The last time the Mayor bantered with an actor about his green agenda, it was to watch Arnold Schwarzenegger salute him as an "environmental warrior" on the launching of PlaNYC. Since then, the state and federal governments have blocked every city-crafted law that offers meaningful reform. When singers from current shows stepped off the bleachers to belt out a specially commissioned tune ("Yes, one person may seem weak and small-y/But all work together and, by golly..."), the friendly folks in the audience noticeably let the laugh lines pass. The Mayor's environmental show must go on, but the mess at the MTA and the stall in development makes it feel ever closer to a bread and circus. O ne day in October 2004, Tanys Lancaster says, she met with her manager at Bloomberg L.P., the media and financial-data empire founded by the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg. She’d been demoted, her boss informed her, and her bonus was being slashed by a third. “Accept it,” she recalls her manager telling her. It was not the sort of directive that Lancaster, now 39, who’d been with the company for 10 years, was likely to accept without protest. “I was livid,” she says today. She was also feeling sick and miserable. Lancaster had undergone months of in vitro fertilization treatments and was pregnant with twins—news she’d shared with her supervisor as soon as she found out, the month before. At the time of her demotion, Lancaster was one of Bloomberg’s highest-ranking female executives, managing a team that sold the company’s financial software worldwide. Her compensation was generous—a $130,000 base salary and a $285,000 deferred bonus the previous year. “It was a phenomenal place to learn and develop,” says Lancaster, a blond, green-eyed Englishwoman. She sits tensely in her lawyer’s downtown Manhattan office as she speaks for the first time to a reporter. “I worked with motivated, professional people. We worked very hard, and we had high-profile customers. It was exciting and challenging.” Following her demotion, though, and especially after she returned from maternity leave, Lancaster says, her status within the company w ...

Despite Mayor Michael Bloomberg 's 5-year-old ban on smoking in bars, patrons are still lighting up after hours. If you've ever been to the Beatrice Inn or Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel last at night, this isn't exactly news. But rarely is it pointed out—with 1,800 or so words devoted to the topic—as it is in this week's Page Six Magazine . A spokesperson for the Rose Bar told the magazine, "The Rose Bar is extremely vigilant in preventing smoking by our patrons. There is a full-time staffperson whose sole responsibility is to monitor and prevent smoking within the bar." But Page Six 's Sara Cardace, visiting the bar on a Thursday, spotted several patrons puffing, and quoted other sources pointing fingers at celebrity-hosting places like Citrine, SubMercer, and GoldBar.  read more » ...

by Ryan Wilson Filed under: Giants , NFC East , NFL Police Blotter , NFL Fans , NFL Injuries Applebee's favorite son , Harris Smith , has gone and done it. Born Plaxico Burress , Smith, who currently works in the employ of the New York Giants, saw fit to shoot a hole in his thigh this weekend while supposedly recovering from a hamstring injury. That's an interesting rehab regimen. Burress surrendered to authorities this morning , and this afternoon New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg offered a scathing rebuke of Plax's actions. Via the Daily News : "It's pretty hard to argue the guy didn't have a gun and that it wasn't loaded," said Bloomberg, lashing out at the Super Bowl receiver. "You've got bullet holes in and out to show that it was there." ... "And I don't think that anybody should be exempt from [three-and-a-half years in the slammer for illegally carrying a loaded handgun]," he added. "And I think it would be an outrage if we don't prosecute to the fullest extent of the law." NBC New York 's Josh Alper writes that Bloomberg also "excoriated New York Cornell Hospital for not reporting the gunshot wound to 'Harris Smith' ... after he went there for treatment and slammed Plax's employers as well. Contrary to previous reports, Bloomberg said the team did not notify the NYPD about the shooting." By BRIAN LEWIS Mayor Michael Bloomberg placed a friendly wager with Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman over the MLS Cup Final between the Red Bulls and the Crew today (3 p.m., ABC). If the Red Bulls win, Mayor Coleman has to ship a package of Ohio State Buckeye candies and a case of Columbus's best ale from the Columbus Brewing Co. But if the Juan Carlos Osorio's squad loses, Mayor Bloomberg must send a large John's Special pizza pie _ in honor of Staten Island native John Wolyniec _ from Basille's Restaurant on Staten Island, a large Italian Hero from Leo's Latticini and Mama's of Corona and a case of Brooklyn Lager from Brooklyn Brewery. "Winning the Major League Soccer title would be a fantastic and fitting end to the Red Bull's come-from-behind season," Mayor Bloomberg said in a release. "Soccer fans from Riverdale to Rockaway will tune in tomorrow to see the team from the country's premier soccer-loving city bring home its first MLS Cup." Mayor Coleman countered "The Crew is the hardest working team in America and the team's excellent players worked harder than ever this season. Along with all Crew fans, I can taste victory. I look forward to tasting Mayor Bloomberg's Staten Island pizza as well." ...
