Just so the far-right doesn't claim the word "Maverick" for themselves...the root of it comes from a Texas politician from the 1800s: Samuel Maverick who refused to brand his cattle. Interestingly enough...his great grandson, Maury Maverick took on the 1950s redbaiting/McCarthyism.
