Another new artist making waves at this year's Bonnaroo was Matt Morris, whose debut album, Un-American , drops later this year. But while it's his affiliations that sometimes garner him some notoriety -- his former fellow Mousketeer Justin Timberlake is putting out Morris' album on his own Tennman Records, and Charlie Sexton is co-producing -- his music is beginning to speak for itself. Watch Matt and Sexton perform "Un-American" backstage in SPIN.com's Bonnaroo tent: ...

Despatches from the BBC's foreign correspondents. This week: Israel's war of words with Iran will most likely remain exactly that, according to diplomatic correspondent Jonathan Marcus. Matt Frei in Washington sees no immediate prospect of dialogue between Iran and its main critic, the USA, over Tehran's nuclear programme. Tim Whewell in Lithuania reports on a controversial investigation into the wartime activities of Jewish partisans. From Srinagar in Indian Kashmir, Chris Morris says recent violent protests came as tourists had just begun to return to the state. And Duncan Bartlett on a remote Norwegian island finds out why it is forbidden to die in the Arctic. ...

Over at lonestarball.com, Adam Morris has a snippet up from Baseball Prospectus (which, for the unitiated, is a paysite) suggesting the Rangers have all but reached agreements with second round pick LHP Robbie Ross, fifth-rounder OF Clark Murphy and seventh-rounder RHP Matt Thompson (of Burleson). GM Jon Daniels says it's not so. "The report is inaccurate," Daniels just wrote me. "I'd love to say we've reached an agreement because then we'd have these guys out playing, but it's simply not the case. We're working on it, but there's nothing to report." The whole slotting system makes for complicated negotiations. You want to sign a player for more than the recommended slot (as would be the case with all three of these players)? Then you've got to get inform MLB first. And if you are going significantly above slot, MLB is going to be a little bit steamed. You don't want Bud Selig to get mad at you. So, what ends up happening with a lot of these "above slot" deals is that players wait until very close to the deadline so that there announced bonuses won't have an impact on the rest of the market. They sign for their big bonuses. They go to the Instructional League and that's that. I expect it's going to take $1 million or more to keep Ross from going to Kentucky. But I think the figures of more than $500,000 for Thompson and $350,000 for Murphy may both be a little bit on the high side. I don't doubt the Rangers are working towards ge ...

This past week, I've been asking TPM staffers to write up their summer reading picks. Below, some of our superb interns weigh in. Lakshmi: I read Carl Sferrazza Anthony's wonderful biography of Florence Harding last summer and I plan to continue going down the First Lady route by checking out Sylvia Morris's Edith Kermit Roosevelt: Portrait of a First Lady. Also on my list is the young adult novel Child of Dandelions by Shenaaz Nanji, the story of an Asian Indian girl who fled Uganda with her family after Idi Amin issued his 1972 order expelling all Asians from the country. Matt: For summer reading this year I am mostly just catching up on some Cafe books, Nixonland and Standard Operating Procedure in particular. As a nice beach book, I've also tossed Gravity's Rainbow in there, with some David Sedaris to boot. Dave: My friends and I formed a Thomas Pynchon Book Club, with our first (only?) selection being Gravity's Rainbow, without a doubt the most frustrating and rewarding book I have ever picked up. I'm not even going to try and describe it's madness and perfection. For lighter reading, I'm going with essay books- Will Leitch's God Save The Fan (Crashing the Gates for sports is the best analogy), Keith Johnstone's Improv (techniques on improv comedy, but also great life advice) and Eudora Welty's On Writing (sharp). ...

Matt Hasselbeck Stats Highlights Lowlights Outlook Stats * *Includes all games minus Week 10, Divisional Round and the second half of Week 3 and the first half of week 1. Highlights 9/9/07 The series ends with Morris making a tumbling catch in the endzone for the score. Let's start with the first play of the drive. Leonard Weaver's in as the lone back. Seattle's in a three wide, single tight formation. Weaver pops into the flat, Beck scrambles for three, but what's interesting here is that after the play ends Beck chews out Weaver seemingly because he ran the wrong formation or was supposed to stay back and block. Flash ahead to the presnap huddle on the seventh play of the drive. The Hawks only have 10 men on the field, and once everyone gets to the line of scrimmage that becomes clear. Someone, possibly Holmgren, calls a timeout from the side line. Beck, again, is visibly agitated. The camera zooms on him approaching Holmgren and I think I see his lips say: something, something "Wide Open". The following formation is similar, but now instead of three wide and a single back, the Hawks start 3 wide with an I back formation. Presnap Morris motions to the left and you can see Hasselbeck watching as Derrick Brooks shadows out on coverage. It's really almost too obvious. The play starts, Beck looks right briefly and then keys on Morris running a fly pattern. Beck launches a real lofty pass, lots of arch, and Morris nearly loses the ball in ...

Cristian Guzman's first All-Star game  was Cal Ripken's last. On July 10, 2001, in Seattle, Washington's SAFECO Field, the Baltimore Orioles' Hall of Fame shortstop started at short before stepping over to third for then-Rangers' shortstop Alex Rodriguez, who'd been voted in as the starter, and whose idea it was for Ripken to begin the game in the position he manned expertly for most of twenty-one Major League seasons with the O's. After Ripken for an inning, A-Rod and then Derek Jeter at short for the American League, Minnesota shortstop Cristian Guzman got his shot as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the seventh with Yankees' catcher Jorge Posada on third, two outs and Cards' righty Matt Morris on the mound for the trailing National League...Guzman struck out, and then played the top of the eighth and ninth innings in the field in the  AL's 4-1 win ...( Ripken, you'll remember, homered in his final All-Star at bat, taking the first pitch of the third inning from Dodgers' pitcher Chan Ho Park for a ride...) Guzman might get some time in the field tonight, as one of only three shortstops on the NL's roster...What to expect? What do you think? One of the 2 triples? 5 HR's? or 26 doubles Guzman's connected on out of the 126 hits he has in 405 '08 AB's? Or, more likely...another one of the 93 slap singles Guzman's collected so far this season on his way to leading the National League in hits at the Break.. . Guzman's "1st Half" #'s - ...

Do the Cubs need a starter?  or reliever?  Here's the reason Hendry may be having trouble: the pickings of pitchers who will be FAs at the end of this season is mighty slim (or unrealistic).  Not that he can't target others (I'd love Guthrie from BAL), but these are the guys most likely on the market. * - 2009 Option (team or player) Starting Pitchers             Relief Pitchers Kris Bensen BAL             Tony Armas Jr. PIT A.J. All I can say is UGH Part II. Is it easier to pull off an upset early in the season on the favored teams home field or later in the season at home in front of a frenzied crowd when your team is now finding itself? Definitely more unexpected early in the season at Foxboro. However, if the Phins could get a lead somehow in the game, a defensive TD or a kickoff return for TD, the crowd would go WILD. This will be a real test of Sparano's coaching and motivational talents. What do you think the outcome will be as a big underdog at home? Patriots Roster (Does anybody see a weakness?)   2008 Week 10: Seattle at Miami 1 pm             Seattle has been Weak against the run at times last year; They are super deep on the D-line and cornerback; They have good LBs but small and susceptible to the power running game They are very thin and a little injury prone on the OL and at WR. They struggle on the road away from their loud homecrowd  advantage.  I think the Phins can stop Julius Jones and force Hasselbeck to throw a lot to a subpar receiving corps. I think the Phins can power run against Seattle and stay away from the pass. I think the Phins take this one. Who do you think will win?
