Former Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow was on the Wake Up Zone on 104.5 this morning and had this to say about the 3rd pick in the 2006 NFL Draft: "Everyone knew who I wanted and... the minute that they took Vince I told my wife, 'I think my days are numbered here.'" Obviously Chow is talking about Leinart. So basically the Chow VY relationship was doomed from the beginning. What I can't figure out is did he say this because he didn't think VY would fit his system, or because he didn't think VY was good enough to play quarterback in the NFL. Either way it is a terrible attitude to have, and it goes a long way in explaining why he and VY never seemed to mesh. You can say what you want about VY's progression so far, but Leinart has been worse. I know Leinart has had some injury issues, but even when he has been healthy he hasn't been any good, and keep in mind that he has not one but two receivers in Arizona that are 100 times better than anyone here. ...

Unless Steve Young took the wrong bridge out of San Francisco last night, there were no known professional-level quarterbacks in the city of Oakland, CA, last night. Normally, this would not be cause for concern, but an NFL preseason contest took place in Oakland Coliseum at the same time. (Arizona won 24-0. We're not sure why this matters, but completists in the audience should be sated.) Matt Leinart threw three interceptions, JaMarcus Russell showed little familiarity with the needs of the position, and Kurt Warner is still Kurt Warner. But hey, no worries; the passing game's passé; running's in with the kids ! • Happy feet good; happy hands bad: In running news, Rashard Mendenhall fumbled twice (I-L-L! Where's-the-ball?) and Willie Parker raced out for 18 yards in 10 carries, but jigglin' Jeff Reed booted four balls through upright stanchions for a Steelers 12-10 victory over the Vikings. One particular joy this NFL offseason is to flip through the preseason guides and note all the references to the above Matt Leinart photo. Inevitably, it'll read something like, "Leinart had an offseason that pleased the ladies and the blogs more than it pleased the Cardinals coaching staff." I still think this is a rather epic photo; it even inspired a Jeopardy! question Lest we forget, by the way, that back before the photos, Leinart actually had sex with Paris Hilton . That's about a million times worse than a beer bong and some coeds. But hey: He loves puppies . And remember: The Buzzsaw have been asking Leinart to cool it for a while now . I see no reason he can't continue down both paths; insane alcohol exploits AND a Super Bowl title. He'd make a better Joe Namath than that other guy . But is he a Hall of Famer? It's Week 3 of the preseason, so this game takes on more significance than the previous two, and there's still plenty to be determined. Chief among them: is Matt Leinart really Arizona's starting quarterback? Head coach Ken Whisenhunt is still undecided (or, at the very least, he's not talking if he has made a decision), but these things will be sorted out by Sept. 7. That's the hope, anyway. In the meantime, Leinart will get the start against the Raiders, and he hopes to fare better than he did in his two previous trips to The Hole . Two years ago, Leinart's lone regular-season start in Oakland was a disaster as the Raiders tortured the Cards' offense all game and began the countdown to coach Dennis Green's firing. Last season, the Cards opened the preseason on the road against the Raiders, and Leinart finished 5-of-11 for 50 yards while showing some signs that he wasn't particularly sharp in coach Ken Whisenhunt's new offense. But it gets worse: Leinart has also been the victim of verbal abuse , which is so out of character for Raiders fans that I wonder if he's making the whole story up for attention. After the game he said something about not living in fear of losing his job if he makes an errant throw, a bad read, or doesn't execute a textbook three-step drop. "That's not the way I approach it," he said. "No one is perfect. No one is going to make the play every single time. Obviously, there's going to be bad plays. No one is perfect. You are not going to throw a great ball every time. If I worried about that I wouldn't be playing football." Well, he may not be worried about it, but he could have plenty of time to contemplate his soon-to-be Sunday afternoon fate: standing on the sidelines pretending to hope Kurt Warner , newly installed Cardinals starter, doesn't throw a pick-six on his next attempt. You see, Leinart, who's had a horrendous record against the Raiders, made his way to Oakland for a Week 3 preseason game and promptly laid an egg. He finished the evening 4 of 12 for 24 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions. On the upside, the Cards still managed to win the game. Hey, at least these guys have began believing. After winning their first preseason game before the 2008-09 NFL football season officially begins, the Cardinals have earned the right to start believing in themselves, earning the license if you will, to be optimistic after years of turmoil within the organization. You read it, the Arizona Cardinals , after earing their first preseason win over the Chiefs in Kansas City, have began believing that they just might have what it takes to be a legitimate contender in the NFC West. Hey, since that division will probably be the weakest one coming into the regular season, this is probably the perfect time for the Cardinals to make bold statements while they can. And since they now have two solid quarterbacks trying to outdo one another, resulting to a 27-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs , we can't really blame these guys for being this naïve early into the football calendar right?
