Tuesday Nov 18 (7pm) @ Hammer Museum First published by her pal Matt Groening in Evergreen State College's school paper, cartoonist Lynda Barry's Ernie Pook's Comeek propelled her to cult figure status after being picked up by the Chicago Reader in 1979. Groening has been no slouch in the cartoon world either, authoring the weekly Life is Hell comic strip and moving on to create award-winning cultural phenomena such as The Simpsons and Futurama . Tonight, the colleagues catch up for an animated tête-à-tête as part of the Hammer Museum's Conversations series. ...

Ostracus writes to tell us that Wired has an interesting summary of some of the best fictional doomsday devices. These devices have featured heavily in movies, television, and fiction, their list includes favorites from Dr. Strangelove to Futurama. What devices have they missed? "By the time Futurama's sci-fi satire hit the scene, creator Matt Groening had the doomsday-device shtick down. Case in point: the Spheroboom. This highly explosive space/time-bending device isn't just the prized jewel of the show's mad scientist, professor Farnsworth. It also destroys anyone/anything not wearing a 'Doom-proof Platinum Vest.'" Read more of this story at Slashdot. ...

Matt Groening - jeden z głównych twórców animowanego serialu The Simpsons , nie oszczędza dosłownie nikogo. Few have been spared the satire of Matt Groening's long running animated sitcom. Last night, The Simpsons took on Apple, or uh, Mapple for a full 6 minutes of lampoonery -- a pretty harsh ride at a two-joke per minute pace. It all starts when the Springfield mall gets its very own Mapple store, "it's so sterile," gasps Lisa upon entering. Perhaps the best exchange comes from Bart's dubbing of a Steve Mobs' product announcement in front of a crowd of gaping nerds, "You think you're cool because you buy a $500 phone with a picture of a fruit on it. Well guess what? They cost 8 bucks to make and I pee on every one!" A Mapple store employee then angrily responds, "Who dares question the boss we fired 10 years ago and then brought back!" Yuk yuk. Videos after the break for as long as it takes for the copyrighters to wake up. [Thanks, holycow] Continue reading The Simpsons mocks (m)Apple Filed under: Misc. Review by Craig Matsumoto From 1987, classic Bay Area experimental rock starring Henry Kaiser (guitar) and Andy West (bass), with Michael Maksymenko (drums) or, sometimes, John French (drums; of Captain Beefheart fame). With a cover drawn by Matt Groening back before the Simpsons hit it big! Fun weirdness; check out track 6 for a good time with goofy spoken-word narration. ...

Mark (the Rabbi) Rabinowitz, a New York-based film writer and constant festival-goer, had an answer to the guy who's suing for rights to a name like Batman. "What's next? New York City sues Martin Scorsese? Perhaps everyone named "Simpson" sues Fox and Matt Groening? Maybe the state of Indiana should sue Spielberg, Lucas, Ford and Paramount," Rabinowitz intoned. He has the right idea. New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

This is the second of four direct-to-DVD movies based upon the animated series Futurama . Futurama revolves around the adventures of Fry, a pizza delivery boy from the late 20th century who was frozen for a thousand years and now lives in the early 31st century, where he works for a small package-delivery company. The series, created by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, ran from 1999 to 2003 on the Fox network despite it having a large following. Comedy Central, a US cable network, has picked up the rights to the series and has commissioned four feature-length films. Each of the films, in turn, would then be broken up and re-edited into four regular-sized episodes for broadcast, thus creating a sixteen-episode season that would air on Comedy Central. The first movie, Bender's Big Score , was released last year. This, the second, was released earlier this year, and more or less picks up where the previous film left off. The previous film left a plot thread hanging, in the form of a tear in the fabric of space caused by events towards the end of that movie. In this film, a few weeks have passed since the rip in space was created. It's visible from Earth in the form of a jagged, glowing line in the sky. But nothing has happened other than that it's there, and so Earth's population is finally starting to go on with their lives instead of regarding the anomaly with dread and panic. Professor Farnsworth proposes that a scientific expeditio ...

There aren't many celebrities who haven't fallen victim to the comical and satirical genius of Matt Groening at some point, which in a way is a great compliment (you're not anyone until you've had the piss taken out of you on The Simpsons right?). Tony Blair's had to do it, as well as Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, Bill Gates, Mick Jagger and a whole host of others. Well this time Apple, or shall I say Mapple, bore the brunt of the mockery. ...
