It was hours before the game, before Daisuke Matsuzaka would take the mound, walk too many, and still win. Before Jason Varitek would show for the second straight night that he isn't quite done as a hitter. Before another power swing (and result) by Kevin Youkilis. That was when Josh Beckett stood at his locker in Camden Yards ... ...

Filed under: Red Sox Our MLB editor provides weekly dispatches from major league games in Notes From the Clubhouse . Before Daisuke Matsuzaka 's start Tuesday night in Baltimore, someone asked Terry Francona what he thought of the absurd extra innings rule implemented at this year's Olympics, which allows teams to start each inning from the 11th on with runners on first and second base. After, the Red Sox manager joked that he had gotten a pretty good idea what the rule was like just by watching Matsuzaka. The Japanese pitcher ran his record to 15-2 Tuesday, but, just as it's been all season long, the win wasn't very pretty. He lasted just five innings, facing runners on first and second in each of the first three frames and escaping a bases loaded jam in the fourth. He made hitters miss plenty -- striking out six -- but he continued handing out free passes at an alarming rate -- walking six. "It's kind of a tightrope act sometimes," says Francona. "He has the ability to make pitches. He has power on his fastball." The problem with a tightrope act like Matsuzaka's season-long one is that when his luck runs out, it could be spectacularly ugly for the Red Sox. Here are the worrisome details: - Despite a 15-2 record and a 2.77 ERA, Matsuzaka has surrendered 77 walks. - His miniscule .258 batting average on balls in play is unsustainable (major leaguers average between .290 and .310). - Only 22 percent of runners who have reached bas ...

BALTIMORE - Boston is going through its bullpen. After Clay Buchholz lasted 2-1/3 innings, allowing three hits, five runs, David Aardsma, Javier Lopez and now Mike Timlin have appeared. We're in the bottom of the fifth. Buchholz lost his seventh straight decision, the longest streak by a Sox pitcher since Frank Castillo lost eight straight June 19-Sept.16, 2002. A pair of three-run homers by Ramon Hernandez in the third and Melvin Mora in the fourth have broken this open for the O's. Jason Bay answered with a solo shot, his 26th of the season with two outs in the fifth. It's 10-5 Orioles. It's a good thing the Sox have a day off tomorrow to rest everyone. It didn't help that Daisuke Matsuzaka lasted only five innings. ...

via d.yimg.com Thank you, Jon Lester and Jason Bay . The Red Sox got back in the win column with a 6-3 victory over Orioles. Lester went seven innings and allowed just one run. Bay provided the offense by hitting two home runs, knocking in four RBIs and finishing 3 for 5 with two runs. All is right in Red Sox Nation. Even though it was against the Orioles, this was a very important win because it was our ace matched up against thier ace. The Sox have struggled against some of the better pitchers in baseball, so touching up Jeremy Guthrie is nice. Lester gave up four hits and one run, an Aubrey Huff dinger. Manny Delcarmen allowed two runs in relief, while Jonathan Papelbon finished the last 1.1 innings to earn the save. A sweep of the O's would be very nice. After letting the Jays walk all over us, the Sox need to make up some ground on the Rays. I'm actually at the point where I think I'm starting to get nervous. Some may already be at that point and some may never get there, but I think I'm there. The Sox need to play their best ball because it doesn't look like the Rays are going to fall off the map now. Speaking of those Rays, today they use six pitchers and still come out with a 6-4 win. That's not dominant baseball right there. Will that come back to bite them in the butt? Let's hope so. Tomorrow it's Daisuke Matsuzaka facing off against Daniel Cabrera . Can you say, 'Walkapalooza'? ...

BEIJING (AP)—A marquee pitcher such as Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka wearing Japan’s colors come 2016: That’s the image international baseball organizers are conjuring in their efforts to get the sport back on the Olympic program. Okay, so the idea is that they're trying to get MLB to lend their players during the pennant run to play in the Olympics, much like the NPB now does. (Have I mentioned recently that Team Japan under Hoshino totally sucks?) Anyways, I'm not a big fan of the idea. Disrupting league play for an international event like a better designed WBC makes sense, but the IBAF simply doesn't know how to pull it off. I'm not even a fan of tournament baseball for MLB-level baseball.  The Olympics simply isn't the highest level of the sport/ ...

Beth recaps his first ejection, along with all the hot Coco action in the outfield. Kristen considers Matsuzaka's performance: ... Honestly, "pitching out of jams all night" should probably be Matsuzaka's middle name. So much does he love loading the bases and working full counts and walking guys that, by all reason, should have struck out, that it's a wonder to me that he's actually 15-2. Which is also why I called Lester the team's ace yesterday. It's just...even Tito thinks watching Matsuzaka pitch is frustrating. That was his word, "frustrating." Probably because you can't swear on TV. Unless you're Josh Beckett apparently. ... ...

Link: http://www.projo.com/redsox/content/projo_081908_red_sox20.12e9798b.html Apparently, Beckett claims that he slept on his right arm wrong, and is now experiencing "tingling" in that right arm. His next start will now be pushed back 3 days. So instead of pitching this Saturday in Toronto against the dreaded Blue Jays, Jon Lester will take his place on the mound instead. And on Sunday, it will be Daisuke Matsuzaka's turn. The Sox have an off day Monday, so Josh Beckett will get his next start on Tuesday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. It looks like a precautionary thing to me, so I'm not too worried about it. Anyone else concerned at all? ...
