Minneapolis -- With two months to go until election day, analysts are slicing and dicing the numbers as they sort out the fall campaign. At the Republican National Convention, former Gov. Tommy G. Thompson and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker had their own take on the numbers. First Thompson: In regard to criticism about the experience of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential pick, Thompson set about adding up he ages of the candidates: Palin is 44, nominee John McCain is 72. On the Democratic side, nominee Barack Obama is 47 and running mate Joe Biden 65. Thus, Thompson said, the average age for the tickets is this: GOP 58, Democrats 56. "I think it's pretty much the same," he said, Meanwhile, Walker looked at Palin's appeal to former backers of Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton, who lost to Obama. He guessed 75% to 80% are not likely to consider Palin. Of the remaining voters, he suggested that if half went to Republicans it would be a difference-making swing. "In a state like Wisconsin," he said. "That's enough to win the election." ...

Most Kentucky high school juniors struggle with Math and science and aren't prepared for college-level courses in those subjects, according to ACT college entrance results released Thursday. Of the nearly 43,000 public high school juniors who took the test last spring, only 20 percent met Math goals and 15 percent met science goals. Overall, students scored an average ACT composite of 18.3 out of a possible 36. This was the first time juniors were required to take the test under state law. Bob Sexton of the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence said the scores reinforce what educators already know: Kentucky students need help with Math and science. Sexton said the major reason for getting all juniors to take the ACT is because �it encourages kids who might not have been thinking about college, to think about college.� Meanwhile, Education Commissioner Jon Draud contends the ACT scores don't necessarily indicate Kentucky students performed poorly. ...
