Shares of Marvell Technology were hot today, rising nearly 6% to $16.88. Lifting shares was a rumor that the company might be bought by Texas Instruments or private equity firm Silver Point Partners, according to Barron's . Marvell shares have run up 50% since April, helped along by a surprisingly profitable Q1 report and a solid Q2 forecast. Marvell bought Intel's XScale mobile chip business two years ago for $600 million in cash, a controversial move at the time but one that turned out to be very sharp. The company now provides chips for Apple's iPhone, RIM's BlackBerry and other devices. Chip stocks were hurt earlier this week when the Semiconductor Industry Association cut its sales growth outlook for the year to 4.3% from 7.7%. But that was mainly because of strong competition in DRAM memory chips, which account for about 20% of chip sales; if you took those out, chip sales were expected to grow a 7.4%  ...

Also they are once again outlining where they believe there is upside to their and street numbers, and why MRVL remains one of their favorite ideas. Amtech is out indicating this morning that Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) has displaced MRVL in its 2.5G "Javelin" product due out mid '09.
