So I officially entered the wonderful world of fatherhood and it's all sorts of awesome. Every cry, every feeding, every moment is just wonderful. Now this night owl has a partner in crime — one with a penchant for diapers and burp cloths. And if I ever run low on either I can always use the pages of "Uncanny X-Men" No. 500 "drawn" by Greg Land . Hit the jump for why Land makes this milestone issue such a letdown. — Ren&eacute A. Guzman First off, I used to love "Uncanny X-Men" back in the days of Paul Smith , John Romita Jr. and Jim Lee . And I've long said Professor X helped boost my vocabulary, which is as much a nod to the "Uncanny" writing as to the "Uncanny" art. I just had to pick up "Uncanny" No. 500 because I thought it might take me back to the good old days. Besides, you can't go wrong with talented writers like Ed Brubaker and Matt Fraction driving the bus. Turns out Land took me back instead — to middle school when I tried to draw a Marvel/DC crossover comic using poses from other comic books. I think I managed all of three pages before a buddy of mine and I bailed on the idea. I can honestly say it was something a seventh-grader with no confidence in his drawing skills or lack thereof would do. If only I had actually tried drawing from my own imagination instead of taking such blatant shortcuts. Which brings me to Greg Land. Land is known (make that notorious) for photo referencing. Look, it's not unusual for artists to us ...

Just announced during the DC Nation panel, Kevin Smith will be writing a three-issue Batman miniseries, Batman: Cacophony , starting in November. The miniseries will bring Onomatopoeia, the villain from Smith's Green Arrow run, into the Batman universe, as well as featuring appearances from the Joker and other more familiar Bat-Villains. When Smith, known for his late and unfinished Marvel comics, was told that the series starts in November, he laughed and said "Good luck." Nonetheless, the series is planned to run through January 2009. ...

Is anybody else worried that the Steelers aren't going to re-sign some of their key free agents-to-be at the end of this year? The Steelers are famous for not usually working on player's contracts over the course of the season. I have heard numerous reports saying that if the Steelers don't sign some of these free agents before the start of the season, they will surely be gone next offseason.  This list includes: Charlie Batch;unrestricted, Carey Davis;restricted, Willie Colon;restricted (doesn't seem right but he's on the list I found), Max Starks;restricted(?), Marvel Smith;unrestricted, James Farrior;unrestricted, Bryant McFadden;unrestricted, Anthony Smith;restricted. *Note: There are a few more guys but I mainly went with our key players.  I am going to go in-depth on each of these player's with my own opinion of how it should be handled. If you have no interest in these matters I will save you 5-10 minutes of your life and warn you not to read my post. : ) -Will the Steelers resign Batch for a one or two-year deal if we don't like the quality of play from Rookie 5th-Round draft pick QB Dennis Dixon?  We do need a backup plan if our $100 million man breaks down...I say bring Batch back if Dixon still looks lost. -If Carey Davis has another subpar year will Tomlin finally let go of one of "his guys" that he brought in here?  I personally believe we can find a better option elsewhere, or even from within (Russell?).  But, I do r ...

Filed under: Steelers , AFC North , NFL Free Agency The new salary cap management technique sweeping the NFL is locking up your players before they reach free agency. It explains why so few elite players reach the free agent market, and it also explains (with a little help from some hefty salary cap bumps) why so few teams battle to stay under the cap. But as the Steelers get ready to head to training camp, it's pretty clear that they aren't going to be able to re-sign everyone who is heading into the final years of their deals. Pittsburgh has three offensive tackles (Marvel Smith, Max Starks and Trai Essex) heading to free agency after the season, along with one guard (Chris Kemoeatu), one wide receiver (Nate Washington), a cornerback (Bryant McFadden) and a linebacker (James Farrior). Smith, Kemoeatu and Farrior are all starters, while Starks and McFadden could earn starting roles this year, and Washington is a valued No. 3 receiver who has started as an injury fill-in in the past. So these are some pretty significant decisions facing the Steelers.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Depending on who you are there is some good news and some bad news about Hancock . If you love superhero movies like The Incredible Hul¬k --where the traditional comic book structure of hero defeats super villain, finds romance and battles inner turmoil remains untouched¬--then you will most likely be disappointed by Hancock . But, if you've had your fill of traditional superhero films after Marvel's one-two punch with the entertaining but still conventional Iron Man and the aforementioned, insipid Hulk , then the genre-twisting, Will Smith-vehicle Hancock should be a pleasant surprise for you in this year's so-far unexceptional summer movie season. ...

With the Summer Olympics quickly approaching, all eyes are on Beijing in anxious anticipation of how the world’s best athletes will fare. But this past Saturday in Lincoln, all eyes were on a younger set of athletes as they splashed, mashed, and dashed their way through the fifth annual Lincoln Kids Triathlon. Starting as early as 7 a.m., participants and their parents made the trek from the Smith School parking lot over to Hartwell Pod A to sign in or register for the competition. There, each triathlete received a bracelet, color-coded to indicate his or her placement within the five different age brackets, as well as a race bib and number. Despite the competitive nature of the day, the pervading atmosphere around Ballfield Road was a friendly and amiable one.  “The focus is not on the triathlon right now,” Lincoln resident Tauwhitu Parangi said, as he watched his son Dani and his friends Marvel over a toad they had found. As the boys returned to their bikes, Parangi added, “They’re all very competitive, but they have fun anyway.” Echoing Parangi’s sentiments was 8-year-old Natick resident Belle Hartshorn, who competed in the triathlon along with her brother and sister. “I just come here to have fun,” Hartshorn said. As start time drew near, participants parked their bikes in the lot by the Brooks gym and headed up to the Codman Pool. Supporters surrounded the pool in anticipation and enjoyed live music provided by the Lincoln Min ...

First and foremost, camp is only 7 days away. We've waited nearly seven months for Steelers' football to resume and it's almost here. As Hank Williams Jr would ask, are you ready for some football?? James Farrior's going to be a free agent after this season and while both sides are saying that they are hopeful a deal can get done, he's aware of the Steelers' history of letting 30-something players walk. His agent claims that Farrior thinks he can play another four or five years and that he doesn't think he'll return to Pittsburgh if an extension isn't done before the start of the season. Dale Lolley has some encouraging news on the upcoming signing of both Sweed and Mendenhall . He thinks that Sweed's deal will be announced by Friday and Mendenhall's should be done by the weekend. There's also a very interesting note about a possible veteran signing/extension. Could it be Farrior or McFadden or Marvel Smith? Any other guesses? Here's a small preview of another camp battle that we'll roll out later today. Pro Football Weekly says that it's not a sure thing that Timmons will take Foote's starting job and even goes as far to say that they could both play vital role's in the defense this season. We'll dive into this potential battle in depth later today. I don't put any faith in this report but it's out there so here goes. Santonio Holmes is working on punt returns and could be the primary punt returner for the Steelers, according to ...

Two things I'll definitely do this weekend: Go to the Dudley High School Consolidated Reunion and see the new Batman movie (with apparently everybody else). The Dudley reunion is a sight to behold, and attracts Panther alumni from the 1930s to the 21st century. It also is unique. It happens every year, in addition to individual class reunions during the more typical milestone years. I was at the Koury Center earlier today. I'll be back tonight. If you're in the neighborhood, drop by our Class of '73 room (1696). One other note about the Class of '73: It unofficially also includes students who began at Dudley but were redistricted during desegregation to other schools. So Smith, Page and Grimsley should be well-represented. As for "The Dark Knight," I appreciate the respectful, adult approach to a comics icon. The first movie rooted the idea of a man in a bat outfit in plausibility and explains, for a change, where all those wonderful Bat toys come from. (I thought some of the action was bland and unintelligible, though). The sequel is supposed to be much darker. Good. I grew up with comics. But in the interest of full disclosure, I'm a Marvel guy. Still, I've always had a soft spot for Batman, a DC character, because he's always been a darker, more tortured soul than a lot of the DC heroes. That's a Marvel hallmark. ...
