The Ottawa Senators and Los Angeles Kings on Friday placed goaltenders Ray Emery and Dan Cloutier on waivers in the first step toward buying out the remainder of their contracts. Emery, 25, has two years at $3.167 million per season remaining on his contract while Cloutier, 32, has one year at $3.1 million remaining on his. Once the two clear waivers the Senators and Kings can then buy them out. It’s quite the downfall for two netminders who, while not among the elite of the NHL, were once considered very good starting goaltenders. Emery has re-signed his current contract with the Senators last summer but a combination of injury and other issues saw him lose his starter’s role to Martin Gerber last season. Cloutier’s decline over the past three years was injury-related, specifically a nagging hip ailment which required surgery two years ago. It’ll cost the Kings two thirds the remaining value of Cloutier’s contract spread over twice the remaining tenure, meaning it’ll be just over $1 million per season over the next two years. Emery, because he’s under-26 at the time of the buyout, is only entitled to a one-third buyout of his remaining contract value over twice the remaining tenure, breaking down to over $560K per season for the next four years. Both will become unrestricted free agents in July. Emery might still find employment in the NHL but Cloutier’s NHL career is probably over. No Comments ...

Following a trip to the 2007 Stanley Cup Final and then getting off to a 15-2 start last season, the Ottawa Senators began to free-fall, and most of the blame was thrown at starting goaltender Ray Emery. Today, neither his team nor the rest of the NHL wanted to give him a real chance. After having offseason wrist surgery, Emery was slow to recover to full form, and it’s debatable if he ever did. Following a series of regrettable events, like being late to practice, a fight with team heavyweight Brian McGrattan and the perceived assumption that he didn’t want to be there, the goaltender ultimately shared duties between the pipes with Martin Gerber. Emery ended the season with a 12-13-4 record and a modest save percentage of .890. His opponents claimed he was the main reason the Senators fell apart. But even if that’s completely true, it’s pathetic. These are grown men that are paid millions of dollars for this job. How can they be distracted by one guy who would rather be partying than on the ice sometimes? Yeah, he should have been more mature given the high investment that the Senators had in him. But what can you do? Think about it, readers, is there someone at your work that doesn’t always want to be there and needs a slap in the face? Of course there is! So why has this been such a big deal? After that unfortunate year, Emery signed a $2 million deal (U.S. dollars) with Russian club Atlant Mytishci of the new Continental Hock ...

It wasn't a surprise to most when goalie Ray Emery was put on waivers (and then bought out) by the Ottawa Senators after a rough season this year. But what surprises me is that no team has taken a chance and signed him by now. If you look at Emery's stats in the 2006-07 season, you'd understand why the Ottawa Senators made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Emery had a record of 33-16-6, a goals-against-average of 2.47, a save-percentage of .918, and five shutouts. His playoff stats were just as impressive, when he had a record of 13-7, and goals-against-average of 2.26, save-percentage of .907, and three shutouts. Yes, they eventually lose to the Ducks, but John Muckler even said (after they won the Eastern Conference Final), that the fact he took a team to the Stanley Cup Final makes him an elite goaltender. However, it looked like this that Emery wasn't so "elite" the following season. He had a record of 12-13-4, a goals-against-average of 3.13, and a save-percentage of .890. However, Emery's failure had nothing to do with stats; it had to do with discipline, and a bit too much ego. Emery had a wrist injury early on in the season, and when his season began, it got off to a bumpy start. Eventually, Emery lost his starting job to Martin Gerber. This only made Emery lash-out, leading to him showing up to practise late, getting in arguments with his coach and teammates, and it affected his whole team. This ultimately led to the poor sea ...

It is was day 10 in the trial of Antonio Stridiron and Bradley Davis. The two men stand accused of two separate crimes- Stridiron of murdering 27-year-old Joshua Velasquez, and Davis is accused of aggravated assault. After some brief morning discussion, jurors experienced an un-orthodox end to the day. Dan Erdmann has more. (Dan Erdmann, KX News) It's not very often that court proceedings conclude outside the courtroom, but that was the case today. Before jurors were called into the courtroom, Judge Doug Mattson made his ruling on a previous request made by Stridiron's attorney, Robert Martin. Martin asked the judge to allow a jury viewing of the area in which the crime took place. Judge Mattson said he would allow the viewing, but jury members were ordered to remain on a bus as it was driven through the neighborhood. That trip took place this afternoon and upon returning to the courthouse, jury members were released for the day. This morning, the State called only one rebuttal witness, who testified in response to a defense witness called yesterday. Cynthia Gerber's testimony was a short one, but in it, she talked about her knowledge of Alicia Boyce. Boyce told the court Wednesday that she observed a physical altercation between Bradley Davis and Joshua Velashuez seven months prior to his murder. She also spoke of a previous relationship Amy Davis had with Velasquez, which may have led to the altercation. State's attorney, Jo ...

In this rumor I learned from Sports Net Canada, it is now a serious possibility that a three-way trade could be coming in the next few days or maybe even this afternoon. In the report, it is suggested that the Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, and Ottawa Senators are involved in the deal, and the trade would greatly improve each team. The rumor suggests that the Blackhawks would send goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin and defenseman Cam Barker or Brent Seabrook to the Ottawa Senators. The Senators would then send Andrej Mezaros and goaltender Martin Gerber to the Kings while the Blackhawks would get Anze Kopitar from Los Angeles. This could very well be the blockbuster trade of the year if it comes through. The Blackhawks would add another young superstar to their already deep talent pool while both Los Angeles and Ottawa improve their goal tending.     ...

Goaltender Brian Elliott sent a shudder through the Ottawa Senators when he hurt his right knee at the end of the AHL season. However, after some rehab work in Ottawa with goalie coach Eli Wilson during the Senators’ short playoff run, Elliott has been able to return to the ice. He and a number of other NHL players have been practising at their alma mater, the University of Wisconsin. Elliott will be fine for the regular season. “It feels great,” he said. “I’m able to take regular shots now and do all the things in the weight room.” Where Elliott, 23, ends up next season will be the question of training camp. Ideally, Bryan Murray would like Elliott to play another 50 games in Binghamton. Murray would rather find a capable backup to serve as No. 2 to Martin Gerber, instead of having Elliott sit on the bench in Ottawa. — Canwest News Service ...
