The Hockey News recently published its annual NHL yearbook and as usual one of the notable features is its Top Fifty NHL Players listing for the upcoming season. Although I’m now a free-lance contributor to THN.com that won’t prevent me from critiquing this list, and no, this isn’t a free plug for The Hockey News on my part as I reviewed their rankings last summer prior to contributing to their site. Anyway, here’s how THN ranked their top fifty players for the upcoming season: 1. Sidney Crosby 2. Alex Ovechkin 3. Henrik Zetterburg 4. Pavel Datsyuk 5. Vincent Lecavalier 6. Niklas Lidstrom 7. Roberto Luongo 8. Jarome Iginla 9. Evgeni Malkin 10. Dany Heatley 11. Chris Pronger 12. Daniel Alfredsson 13. Marian Gaborik 14. Henrik Lundqvist 15. Brendan Morrow 16. Evgeni Nabokov 17. Marian Hossa 18. Ilya Kovalchuk 19. Eric Staal 20. Zdeno Chara 21. Joe Thornton 22. Dion Phaneuf 23. Martin Brodeur 24. J-S Giguere 25. Martin St-Louis 26. Scott Niedermayer 27. Brian Rafalski 28. Sergei Gonchar 29. Marty Turco 30. Ryan Getzlaf 31. Andrei Markov 32. Zach Parise 33. Ales Hemsky 34. Jason Spezza 35. Vesa Toskola 36. Rick Nash 37. Joe Sakic 38. Scott Gomez 39. Ryan Miller 40. The Hockey News had salary rankings in their most recent edition, and I was struck by who is makng the most money next season. While the old structure overpaid players who were 30-somethings, the new system seems to overpay players who are younger and who hit free agency at just the right time. The rankings are based solely on salary for next season, and some players have a lower cap hit, but does anybody else see inequities with these Top 10s? The best way to get a handle on the Stars' newest free agent is to go to Wikipedia and then head down to all of the stories on him at the bottom. But just to pull out a few highlights: Here he is saying that union leader Bob Goodenow ``brainwashed him'' and that the players won nothing by going through the lockout. Here he is insulting French Canadian players _ something he would later apologize for. Here he is in a battle with Georges Laraque, in which Laraque accused Avery of using a racial slur and Avery accused Laraque of making it all up. Here he is getting fined for diving _ and then getting fined for complaining about the fine for diving. Here the NHL changes the rules for unsportsmanlike conduct after Avery tried to distract Devils goalie Martin Brodeur by waving his stick in Bordeur's face. And here is his blog for Men's Vogue Magazine and why he chose to be an intern for them this summer. The guy is interesting, you have to give him that. ... Sean Avery likes to run his mouth. He regularly baits opposing players, especially goaltenders, with his verbal arsenal. But it's not always just talk. Avery is effective because he creates havoc in the crease by going to the net without fear. He clearly got into Martin Brodeur's head during the Rangers' first-round playoff victory over the Devils in April, scoring three goals and infuriating Brodeur to the point where the future Hall of Famer blew off Avery in the handshake line at the end of the series. That feud actually started the previous season, when The Grate One (as they called him in New York) crashed into Brodeur's space. ...

Martin Brodeur may have been the happiest player in the New York area yesterday. Nom it?s not because his Devils re-acquired Scott Niedermayer and Scott Stevens didn?t come out of retirement. In part one I am examining the blueline and goaltending currently on the Sharks roster. I hope to provide an analysis of the team's forwards once we find out whether they can re-sign Ryan Clowe. The backbone of every team is its goaltending , and the Sharks are strong in this unit. Not only should Evgeni Nabokov have won the Vezina Trophy as the league's best goalie, leading the league in wins (46) and games played (77-tied with Martin Brodeur, who did win the trophy), but he was only .03 goals per game worse than Brodeur. There are a handful of goalies I would take over Nabokov despite his career year. I believe that while Nabby deserved the award last year, Brodeur is probably still better than him if for no other reason than playoff experience. I also think that Miikka Kiprusoff is a more tested commodity, and there is no question Jean-Sebastien Giguere has the pedigree and consistent performance to surpass all his peers. Roberto Luongo is probably better, but a less proven commodity, especially in the playoffs. The same can be said for Henrik Lundqvist. That leaves Nabby as unquestionably a top six goaltender, in the top 20% of the league's starters. Brian Boucher saw limited action last season, playing mostly in the minors. Despite being the league's record holder for consecutive scoreless minutes in net, he struggled some a couple years back and was out of the NHL for about a year. However, Boucher played very well in the ti ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 22 days ago
