By John Rutherford, Producer, NBC News, Washington With their diverse backgrounds, they could have been characters in an old World War II novel, but their lives were very real, and so were their deaths. Michael Washington was the son of a Seattle firefighter. Michael Patton recently Married his high school sweetheart back home in Fenton, Mo. Dawid Pietrek was an immigrant from Poland. Layton Crass loved to mimic Jim Carrey growing up in eastern Indiana. "I couldn't help laughing at the kid," Crass' mother told pal-item.com. The four members of the 1st Marine Division died instantly June 14 when a roadside bomb tore through their Humvee in southwestern Afghanistan, making them among the latest casualties of the increasingly bloody conflict in that country. "They didn't know what hit 'em," Crass' father said. The four Marines are among 18 American combat deaths so far this month in Afghanistan, compared to 12 in Iraq. Last month, for the first time, the number of coalition soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan exceeded the death toll in Iraq. "They've increased in an absolute sense, but more significantly, they're now higher than they are in Iraq, and of course that gets everyone's attention," NBC Military Analyst Jack Jacobs said in an interview. Col. Jacobs said Afghanistan has always taken a back seat to Iraq, and he doesn't see that changing any time soon. "We don't have enough Troops in Afghanistan, there's no doubt about t ...

One was a third-generation Marine. Another was a Polish immigrant. A third was 19 years old and had only recently Married his high-school sweetheart. And the fourth had tried to enlist in the Marines soon after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks but was rejected because he was only 16. All four were part of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Regiment, based at Twentynine Palms, 64 miles east of Los Angeles. They were killed June 14 by a roadside bomb in Farah province, where the battalion is assigned to shape up the Afghan security forces. Killed were: Sgt. Michael T. Washington, 20, of Tacoma, Wash.; Lance Cpl. Layton B. Crass, 22, of Richmond, Ind.; Pfc. Dawid Pietrek, 24, of Bensenville, Ill.; and Pfc. Michael Robert Patton, 19, of Fenton, Mo. Although often overshadowed in the media by Camp Pendleton, Twentynine Palms has been key to the U.S. efforts in Iraq and, now, Afghanistan. According to the unofficial website icasualties.org, 117 Marines from Twentynine Palms have been killed in the two conflicts (23 of the 117 are listed in The Times database for Troops with hometowns in California). Camp Pendleton, with more battalions, has had at least 335 killed (78 are listed in The Times database). Pietrek, the Polish emigre, "had his dreams and goals and he achieved it," a family friend told the Chicago Tribune. "He always wanted to be a Marine." Washington's father was a Marine during the Persian Gulf War, his grandfather during the Korean War ...

When Bruce Bennett was shipped to the Middle East, the last thing he expected to worry about was paying for a baby-sitter. "You don't realize the things your spouse has to pay for when you're gone," said the 182nd Airlift Wing captain, ". . . but there are a lot of human things that come up." Bennett, along with more than 11,000 Illinois National Guard and Reserve members, has taken advantage of the Illinois Family Relief Fund, which helps fill the salary gap created when military personnel are deployed. In 2003, Illinois became the first state to create a military fund, and since its inception five years ago, it has distributed more than $6.3 million to families throughout the state. But as an increasing number of Troops are sent to Iraq and Afghanistan, the fund is straining to meet demand. Just in time for the Fourth of July, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, who drafted the fund, made a stop in Peoria on Wednesday to urge people to support the men and women who are fighting for freedom. "They are making a financial sacrifice," he said at a news conference at the Peoria Army Recruiting Station on Wednesday. "This is not charity. It is a token of gratitude from the people of Illinois to those who are serving us and protecting our democracy." Quinn, who traveled throughout Illinois on Wednesday to promote the fund, said 55 percent of Married National Guard and Reserve members report a loss of income when they are called to active duty. Swing State Project has been gathering 2Q fundraising reports as they come out. Florida Governor Charlie Crist is engaged . For the fifth time. (He was Married once, for 6 months.) Obviously it's not like this could have anything at all to do with his vice-presidential aspirations. Matthew Yglesias explains how Cindy McCain's designer suits equip the McCains to understand the struggles of ordinary Americans. Jed Report's Google Earth tour of the McCains' 10 or so houses is another valuable reminder of how absolutely non-elitist they are. Al Giordano unravels the links between a McCain visit and a major hostage  release in Colombia. Ezra points to an article on Utah moving to a four-day work week due to energy use concerns. For most congressional candidates, the Fourth of July is a big day to gain visibility in local celebrations. For obvious reasons , Darcy Burner won't have that chance this year. We can't give her back the Fourth, but we can buy her some respite on the 20th and 21st and all the days until then by relieving her of the necessity to fundraise. The Bush administration extended the tours of 2,200 Marines in Afghanistan fighting in the bloody Helmand province because there are no Troops available to send as reinforcements. Mike Mullen, Chairman of the JCIS, said on Wednesday that more Troops are necessary but "I don't have Troops I can reach for...to send into Afghanistan until I have a reduced requirement in Iraq." - ...

---Quote--- A new order signed by Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Schloesser, commander of Combined Joint Task Force-101, has lifted a ban on sexual relations between unmarried men and women in the combat zone. ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- General Order No. 1 outlines a number of prohibited activities and standards of conduct for U.S. Troops and civilians working for the military in Afghanistan. Previously, under the regulation, sexual relations and "intimate behavior" between men and women not Married to each other were a strict no-no. The regulation also barred members of the opposite sex from going into each other's living quarters unless they were Married to each other. ---End Quote--- ---Quote--- Single men and women can now also visit each other's living quarters, as long as everyone else who lives there agrees, and as long as visitors of the opposite sex remain in the open "and not behind closed doors, partitions or other isolated or segregated areas," according to the new regulation. Unmarried men and women who are alone together in living quarters must leave the door open, according to the new policy. :crazy "The bottom line is that the Troops are responsible for their own behavior," Nielson-Green said. "It really adds a lot of stress, being separated. Now you can sit face-to-face and try to work out things and comfort each other." When American soldiers get off duty in Iraq, the men usually return to their quarters, the women to theirs. But Staff Sgt. Marvin Frazier gets to go back to a small trailer with two pushed-together single beds that he shares with his wife. In a historic but little-noticed change in policy, the Army is allowing scores of husband-and-wife soldiers to live and sleep together in the war zone -- a move aimed at preserving marriages, boosting morale and perhaps bolstering re-enlistment rates at a time when the military is struggling to fill its ranks five years into the fighting. According to a report from the Pentagon, the rate of divorce among members of the armed forces held steady in 2007, at 3.3 percent. Considering that marriages can be under considerable stress due to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, this can be somewhat surprising. Some veterans have questioned if the figures are accurate, but defense officials have cited recent efforts to support couples enduring long separations and hardships due to the wars. According to the Associated Press, the divorce rate represents over 25,000 failed marriages among approximately 755,000 active duty Troops throughout all branches of the military who are Married from a period between October 1, 2006 and October 1, 2007. According to the Defense Department’s data, the Army, which is the branch with the largest number of Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, had a 3.2 percent rate of divorce, which is unchanged from the previous year. That percentage represents 8,748 divorcees among approximately 275,000 Married Troops. Army couples had to deal with extended separations due to tours of duty lasting 15 months instead of 12 months. Longer deployments and multiple tours have taken the blame for stresses on military couples. The biggest exception to the data is the divorce rate among female Troops. Over the past several years, women in the military have had twice as many marriages fail as men.  The data did not provide firm numbers, but it appears that in 2007, eight percent of ...
