"Married adults report better health, but singles are catching up," proclaimed one of the many headlines touting the latest marital status study to make it into the media spotlight. I'll give you my bottom line about this study first. Then I'll explain in greater detail. BOTTOM LINE Here's what the study really did show: 1. For People who had always been single, their health improved continuously from 1972 until the end of the study, 2003 . This improvement was evident in all groups - men and women, Blacks and whites. (This was accurately reported in the media.) 2. The other part of the headline, that Married People are still the healthiest, was misleading in at least four ways: A. The study does NOT show that differences between the currently-Married and the always-single occurred BECAUSE the currently-Married People got Married. Instead, the data were analyzed in a way that gave the currently-Married People an advantage it did not give the single People. (That is standard practice in cottage industry of marriage studies.) B. Even allowing for the approach that makes marriage look better than it really is, the differences in health between the currently-Married and the always-single are tiny. By the last year of the study (2003), the probability of reporting good health was about .928 for the currently Married and about .926 for the always-single. If it is easier to think in terms of percentages, that means that about 92.8% of c ...

Big question for a little Wednesday morning, I know, but it can't be desktops and cupcakes every day. And I read this line: ...

How differently do you treat People you know and are Married? Ok, I understand the theoretical boundries, I like to think of myself as having a resonable amount of common sense - I know very well the NO NO teritorry. The problem is the neutral ground - the grey area. So I'd like your opinion - is there a grey are? What things do you do differently if you know a person is Married versus if that person would not be? I'd appreciate insightful answers, I get that asking for someone's telephone number or a date are banned. The question was raised because I am a bit of a flirt - when I'm in a good mood (when I'm not, frogs seem more interesting than yours trully) . Anyway, I came to realise that because I am not Married nor do I have any close Married friends, maybe there are some boundries - or etiquette - that I am not aware of and I may break. If you are Married, do you expect People to treat you differently? how about your spose? Do you treat People differently? ...

In his column Single People Suck last week, Ryan touched a nerve among single People when he highlighted a billboard in Champaign that praised the economic advantages of being Married. He believed this was an overt message disparaging single People because they are not Married. As a Married person, I think I should chime in. It is unfortunate that Ryan should get this message directly from the billboard. Married People often have long discussions on this topic in their monthly cabal meetings, and we all generally agree: The message that single People suck should be subliminal, so as not to arouse heated arguments. Heated arguments just distract People away from their sole purpose in life, which is to get Married as quickly as possible to the nearest person they can find. ...
