Was Billy the Marlin robbed? OK, not literally. Although back in 1997 the home of the original Billy the Marlin was the target of burglars who took off with his University of Miami championship rings from his days playing Sebastian the Ibis, but I digress…. No, was he robbed of the 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame induction? Billy, you see, was the winner of the popular online fan poll voting for the Mascot Hall of Fame, but he did not secure induction into the Hall. Call him the Al Gore of mascots. That’s right, he won the online fan voting, but missed out on the Hall induction. The public vote plays only a small role in the voting. Nominees must receive at least 75 percent of the ballots cast by the hall’s executive committee. This year’s inductees on the professional sports side are Rocky, the Denver Nuggets mascot, and Slider, of the Cleveland Indians. On the collegiate side, Smokey of the University of Tennessee won induction with both the Hall and the popular vote. So, Billy edged out Slider in the popular vote, but missed out on induction. There really isn't a more delicate way to describe it.  All of you remember that voting in  The Mascot Hall of Fame  thing.  I know you do since we all voted early and often.  As it turns out the online voting didn't mean a thing. It's one thing to overlook the Marlins baseball team for awards, but is completely another to diss Billy the Marlin on a national level.  Sad as it may be, let's face it, Billy has had more face time on ESPN than all of the Marlins players put together.  Past or present. It was 40 years ago yesterday that Broncos QB Marlin Briscoe broke the huddle against the Cincinnati Bengals becoming the first black quarterback to start a National Football League game.  Not much in the way of fan-fair.  I mean, did anyone hear anything about it?  Perhaps it is because it happened in Denver.  If Briscoe had played for the New York Giants they probably would have thrown a ticker-tape parade.  Yes, the east-coast bias card gets played quite often by Broncos fans, and this could just be another example of "if it didn't happen here it isn't news". Perhaps, on the flip-side, its a good thing that Briscoe's achievement isn't big news.  Perhaps it shows how far this country has come.  There are several black quarterbacks in the NFL now, and it's been 20 years since Doug Williams broke the hearts of Broncos fans in the Super Bowl. Still, we celebrate Jackie Robinson and deservedly so.  Briscoe was the first black player to start at the most important position in all of sports.  It has to be worth something, right? To be fair, ESPN.com did have something in it's NFL Blog about the anniversary -- "It's come a long way," Briscoe said from his home in Long Beach, Calif. "They thought a black man could not think, throw and lead at that level." Now the United States could be on the verge of electing its first black president. Wes Helms likes wearing the teal.  Yeah, I know, the Marlins uniforms contain almost no teal on them, but it does make for a  good intro line . Backup infielder Wes Helms, a free agent after the season, has told the Marlins he would like to return in 2009. ''I would love to come back here, and I have indicated that to them,'' he said. I have no problem with Wes being a member of the Marlins next season.  He pinch hits decently and his glove most definitely works. Helms attempted to school the callups, being the veteran that he is, to what they could expect in the final  series of the year .
