Roger Kimball muses today on an old WFB line: In the early 1960s, Bill Buckley famously observed that he would rather be governed by the first two thousand names in the Boston phone book than the two thousand faculty members of Harvard University. After my post last weekend re Governor Palin, a number of readers modified the thought along the following: I would rather be governed by the first 500* names in the Wasilla, AK phone book than by the editors of The Harvard Law Review. (*Presumably reduced from 2,000 because, what with all those five-kid households, there probably aren't... ... Source: www.freerepublic.com --- 40 days ago
The hostess with the moosest [Mark Steyn] Over in the Frumistan province of the NR caliphate, our pal David is not happy about the Palin pick. I am - for several reasons. First, Governor Palin is not merely, as Jay describes her, "all-American", but hyper-American. What other country in the developed world produces beauty queens who hunt caribou and serve up a terrific moose stew? As an immigrant, I'm not saying I came to the United States purely to meet chicks like that, but it was certainly high on my list of priorities. And for the gun-totin' Miss Wasilla then... ... The British Columbia Court of Marsupial Magistrates has finally presumed Mark Steyn and MacLeans magazine innocent of hate speech. We're all been waiting for the Canadian election to end Ezra Levant to resume blogging, and for Mark Steyn to return from hiatus, too. Levant will be toiling in an undisclosed location until the Conservative majority the Liberal minority next week, but Steyn has resumed his columns and radio spots after a long summer. Today Steyn's written about my new book The Tyranny of Nice at his Steynposts blog. Besides writing a fabulous introduction to the book, Mark Steyn is a tireless promoter of The Tyranny of Nice , and Pete Vere and I couldn't be more grateful. Here's a taste of what he wrote today , in his first blog post back in the saddle: Kathy Shaidle and Pete Vere lift the rock on Canada's thought police in their new volume published this week. The Tyranny Of Nice is the book of the show trial of the magazine excerpt of the original hate crime (America Alone). It's a great read, not just about the Steyn case and the Ezra Levant cartoon showdown but about all the other travesties of justice that have received far less publicity, beginning with the outrageous and totalitarian lifetime speech ban on the Reverend Stephen Boissoin. From transsexual labiaplasties to hygiene-free hamburger joints, Kathy and Pete examine the many exotic new "human rights" that have supplanted the old, real human rights, like free speech, the presumption of innocence and the right to a free trial. And remember: if you buy The Tyranny of Nice from the online St ... Source: all.blogmatrix.com --- 2 days ago
Besides writing a fantastic introduction to the book, Mark Steyn is also offering my new book The Tyranny of Nice , for sale through his website: As many readers will know, Mark spent much of 2008 embroiled in spurious hate-crime cases brought by the Canadian Islamic Congress with the aid of their stooges at the Canadian, Ontario and British Columbia "Human Rights" Commissions. In a characteristically robust read, Kathy Shaidle and Pete Vere tell the story of the Maclean's suits, the Alberta government's investigation of Ezra Levant, and other ludicrous cases brought by Canada's diseased "human rights" apparatus. From the "human right" of fast-food employees not to wash their hands after using the toilet to the "human right" of drunken lesbians to heckle stand-up comedians, Shaidle and Vere present a riveting portrait of Canada's kangaroo courts, their assault on liberty, and the lessons they offer for America and other countries. It's a great read, and includes a special introduction by Hatemonger Steyn himself. And don't forget, when you order from SteynOnline , the Hatemonger will be happy to autograph it to you or your loved one. Or hated one. ... Source: all.blogmatrix.com --- 15 days ago
2:40 PM UPDATE: OK, now one source close to the action says there WILL NOT be a decision on the Mark Steyn show trial today ). However, I'm getting ready do to an interview with Wendy Sullivan at Brass Balls Radio in about 20 minutes from now, so I still have no time to blog. AND: Exciting news in another one of today's hot stories... Thanks to the online efforts of Jay Currie, Dr. Dawg and other bloggers (on the right and the left), that Liberal Party candidate and 9/11 "troother" has been kicked off the ticket. Jay Currie has all the gory details of this latest triumph of the blogs. PS: in its story on this "under-bus-ing" of the Liberal's 9/11 "troother" candidate , the Globe & Mail didn't mention a single blog, even though blogs broke and pushed the story. Surprise! (Canada's daily "newspaper of record", along with the nation's "natural governing Party," do, however, "blame the Joooooz". Sheesh.) *** (this morning's original post begins below): I'm preparing for an early morning interview with Richard Pipes, for my next FrontPage article. So: Steyn writes: There's a rumor going around that the three pretend judges of the British Columbia "Human Rights" Tribunal will announce their verdict Friday [today] at 12 noon Pacific For detailed background about this very case, check out the sample chapter about that Mark Steyn show trial , from my new book about Canada's Human Rights Commissions, called The Tyranny of Nice : How Canada Cru ... Steyn gets in a heap of trouble for saying Muslims are outbreeding us in Europe, and our demography is changing globally. You say Pack-i-stan, I say Pah-kee-stahn HALF OF the postings on the National Review's Corner blog from last night (OK, just a few, but too many) focus on annoyance with Barack Obama's pronunciation of "Pakistan". In a related vein, the Corner's Mark Steyn mentions how much he loves Sarah Palin's pronunciation of "Iraq".These are peeves, not about language but identity. Mr Obama's "Pah-kee-stahn" is a shibboleth for a certain class: educated internationalists who know that south Asians pronounce the name roughly as Mr Obama does, including in English. Plenty of Americans say "Pakistan" the way Mr Obama does, though it's certainly a minority preference.Mrs Palin's "Eye-rack" is the same, but roughly in reverse: a shibboleth for a certain folksy American type who would sooner be caught with ... It should be the word of the day. Here's the New York Times on capitulation in the financial context, a "term of art to describe what happens when even the bullish holdouts, the unflagging optimists, throw up their hands and join the stampede out of the market." A lot of conservatives are throwing up theirs hands today, driven into depression by last night's debate. But let's keep our wits about us, as Mark Steyn recommends. One more thought on Ayers. It's an entirely legitimate issue, but not a magic bullet. McCain could have brought Ayers up last night, but Obama would have given his stock reply and it wouldn't have been the "game-changer" everyone's looking for. And if McCain had repeatedly returned to Ayers, it would have seemed weird and off-key. I think McCain made a pretty good substantive case against Obama, and he lived to fight another day. Palin will presumably continue to make the hot-button case against Obama (and it will get attention because the media's so obsessed with her), while McCain hits Obama on the issues and experience. Absent some major outside event or a big Obama mistake, they're going to have to try to grind down his lead in the next couple of weeks. I tend to believe that voters are going to take a serious second look at Obama sometime between now and election day and grapple with whether they're really comfortable making him president. So this thing's not over. Are the odds long? Sure, but they alway ... Find more results for Mark Steyn on RSSMicro.com |
