From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, Domenico Montanaro, and Carrie Dann *** Examining Obama’s coattails: How much did Obama’s name on the ballot benefit Jim Martin (D) a month ago? Consider that during the general election, he trailed Saxby Chambliss (R) by just three percentage points, 49.8%-46.8%, with a third-party candidate garnering more than 3%. But in yesterday’s run-off, with 97% of precincts reporting, Chambliss won by 14 points, 57%-43%, preventing Democrats from obtaining a filibuster-proof...( read more ) ...

Filed under: Senate , Democrats , Barack Obama , 2008 Senate President-elect Barack Obama faces his first political test today in Georgia, where Democrat Jim Martin is challenging incumbent Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in a run-off election to determine the winner of the U.S. Senate race there. Although Obama has not visited Georgia in support of Martin, he has spent some of his political capital on Martin's campaign; sending campaign volunteers from neighboring states to assist in the run-off, and personally recording a radio ad and robocalls for Martin. The effort by Obama is part of the Democratic Party's push to reach 60 votes in the Senate, which would give Democrats the super-majority necessary to overcome Republican opposition to the enactment of Obama's agenda. Chambliss narrowly missed garnering the fifty percent needed to win election outright on Election Day last month, falling just two tenths of one percent short of the Mark. The Real Clear Politics polling average shows Chambliss with a five point lead over Martin, who received 47 percent of the vote on Election Day. A win by Chambliss would guarantee that Democrats could not reach the filibuster-proof 60 seats in the U.S. Senate, but it would be an even bigger blow to President-elect Obama. It may be small consolation, but turning back the Obama juggernaut in Georgia could be the confidence boost Republicans need to right the party after consecutive election year ...

In the waning days of his leadership at the FCC, chairman Kevin J. Martin is trying to push through some striking initiatives in his last chance to leave his Mark on the agency. On Election Day, for instance, the FCC approved unlicensed use for white-space TV spectrum (aka, WiFi 2.0) that is being freed up. Now Martin wants to rid the wireless Web of porn. One of the issues he plans to tackle in upcoming meetings this month, is a plan to give all Americans free access to the Web via the airwaves, minus the porn. Adults would be able to opt back in to get the raw, unfiltered Internet. The proposal opens the door for the FCC to regulate decency standards on the Web, but only when it is accessed over the airwaves by wireless devices. It would reassert the FCC's authority in this area, which harkens back to the decency standards it imposes on broadcast TV. This is a bad idea for several reasons. ...

Newly-elected Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas is scheduled to take his oath of office in a ceremony at the county building this afternoon -- and reopening a troubled hospital is at the top of his agenda. On Tuesday morning, he plans to be outside Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital in Willowbrook to announce a series of benchmarks he says are key to reopening the medical facility by January 2010. Over lunch on Sunday at a vegan restaurant in Inglewood, Ridley-Thomas told The Times' Molly Hennessy-Fiske, who covers county government, that he still is working out the details of his plan. Ridley-Thomas said that during his tough campaign this fall against Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard Parks, residents of the second district made it clear that reopening King hospital is a priority. "I don't know how you can cause people to believe you are serious about a matter without benchmarks," Ridley-Thomas said. "We're not just talking about the Southeast, we're talking about the entirety of the county and the safety net," he said. "The matter is increasingly urgent because of the lack of access to care" and "the debilitative impact this has had on hospitals in the surrounding communities. They've had to carry the load."Federal regulators forced the hospital to shut down last year after it failed to meet minimum standards for patient care, and the county downsized the facility, maintaining only clinic services. For the ...
