Unfortunately, his shoulder is hurt , requiring surgery. He's out for the season. I don't know if I like this. I've been firmly behind Slyde's drive to sign Ellis, as you know. But I'd think a shoulder injury could be problematic. The good news is he's no longer a 4/$28M player; he could probably be had for 1 or 2 years at $4-5M each now, saving money for the inevitable Holliday trade/extension. Thoughts? ... Mark Ellis will sit out the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Ellis has barely played in weeks, so the writing was on the wall. He's yet to decide on surgery. Whatever he chooses, his value as a free agent takes a major hit with the news. Perhaps he'll stay with the A's on a one-year deal and try to rebuild his value. Oakland will keep using Eric Patterson at second base for now. Rotoworld ... Mark Ellis' right shoulder injury, one that was supposed to just keep him out a few days, has turned into a season-ending injury that may require surgery. Ellis, who rejoined the team today after going for further tests, said he has chips in his cartilage, in addition to a torn labrum. The labrum has been torn for "four or five years," Ellis said, but the cartilage problem is more of an issue. Ellis said Dr. John Frazier, the A's orthopedist, recommended surgery, but he is going to get a second opinion. Ellis said he has been told the rehab time for the surgery is three to four months, so he'll be OK for spring training if he does have the operation. Ellis admitted the timing of the injury is bad, because he's about to become a free agent. "It's definitely not good, but I know I can still play," he said. A Harvard degree seems practically required at Facebook these days; founder Mark Zuckerberg never finished his, but COO Sheryl Sandberg and top flack Elliot Schrage have theirs. Newly hired general counsel Ted Ullyot, the veteran of several legal scandals while serving in the Bush Administration , has one, too. But we noticed something curious: Reports of his hire at Facebook had him graduating Harvard in 1989. Past employers, like Time Warner and Kirkland & Ellis say he graduated in 1990 . I called up Harvard's news office and asked which one it was. It's complicated. Ullyot was a "member of the class of 1989," a Harvard employee told me, but he did not get his degree until 1990. He graduated magna cum laude, but the delay seems curious. Especially since Ullyot's dad, James Ullyot, is a prominent Harvard graduate himself, and is now president of the Harvard Alumni Association . Harvard, like all Ivy League colleges, strives to make room for influential graduates' children. Even more curious: Ullyot was two classes behind Sandberg, who graduated — on time, as best we can tell — in 1991. But Sandberg's husband, former Yahoo executive Dave Goldberg, was in the class of '89 with Ullyot. Could that be the connection that landed him the job? If so, just more proof that Harvard connections pay off. ...

WGR550 has reported that the Buffalo Sabres sent eight players back to their AHL affiliate in Portalnd on Friday. They are as follows: Chris Butler, Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy, Mark Mancari, Matheiu Darche, Dylan Hunter, Marek Zagrapan and Mike Funk. Mancari and Darche have both been effectively waived. Here's hoping Mancari doesn't pull a Pominville for someone else. Not likely, honestly. With the injuries to Paul Gaustad and Tim Connolly this team is now officially short at center depth. It looks like recent waiver-bait Matt Ellis will be manning the third pivot until one of those guys is ready to play. I doubt Connolly's situation is serious at this point of one of Gerbe or Zagrapan would still be in Buffalo getting more experience for opening night. I'm sure there are a ton of people who would have liked to see Gerbe on the roster but, truthfully, the jump from college to the pros is a big leap and even a few months of living the grind of life in the 'A' is valuable preparation for the NHL. For the team it gives them time to sort out just who does and who does not what to be here come the deadline in February.
