Well, we now know why Tom Colicchio wasn't at the New York Taste event last night (as promised); he skipped the shindig to hang with fellow celeb chef Mario Batali at a private dinner at the Rockefeller Center rooftop garden . The event, put together by Absolut , was all about cooking with local ingredients grown on eco-friendly farms, and was hosted by chef Jim Denevan, who runs Outstanding in the Field , a "roving culinary adventure" that promotes the locavore lifestyle. Deborah Greig of East New York Farms in Brooklyn, and Michael Hurwitz, director of the GreenMarket , were also in the house. The night started off with cocktails on the roof: Bloody Marys using heirlooms tomatoes from Queens Farm (Michael Grady Robertson); the other cocktail choice used berries picked in Central Park. The dinner was simple and delicious. Cranberry beans, tomatoes, and beets, all taking on a vibrant red color, were cooked to tender perfection. The pork was slightly sweet and incredibly juicy. The pumpkin tarts, on the other hand, were not too sweet and the sage added a unique, subtle flavor. After the dinner, Michael Grady Robertson told everyone about the life of Appleonia, the pig they had just eaten, and was entirely emotional by the end. Bobby Watson spoke about the dedication and inspiration of his father, Abu Talib, who decided to buy a trashed-up lot in the Bronx and turn it into a garden 15 years ago. Jim Denevan was also incredibly emotional ... Source: www.localwineevents.com --- 32 days ago

So, I don't know how to put the day in any better perspective than this picture. Crazy? Yes. Sunday started with breakfast with Mario Batali at his site on the infield at Texas Motor Speedway. Then we went over for a pace car ride, and after taking a spin at 105 mph around the track, we came back. Here is where I have trouble rating the relative level of surreal: When Rachael Ray met me, she bowed. That doesn't happen often. Then, about an hour later, Mario is eating my dish -- pig-wrapped, pig-stuffed pig, for those just joining us -- and repeatedly described it with a two-word response. "(Expletive) (exclamation)!" The expletive was the same every time, and the exclamation was sometimes "amazing," and sometimes "awesome," and there were others. To have Mario Batali standing there talking about my dish that way was crazy. (Unfortunately, Rachael had to take off just after this photo was taken, so she didn't get to try it. I have offered to go to New York to make it for her, because I'll take one for the team like that.) We watched the race, and by then Mario was gone, too. But we hung out at the tailgate site for a couple of hours after the race to let traffic thin. It was me, my wife Pam, Mario's brand manager Darcie, our driver Leo and Billy Harris, who was the emcee at Asphalt Chef on Saturday. We were all hungry. We had five spectacular Viking grills at our disposal and a bunch of food left over from the afternoon. So we dug arou ... Source: room34.com --- 8 days ago
Well, maybe not quite, since Comic Book Guy is a cartoon character. The Authors@Google program was thrilled to welcome acclaimed chef, restaurateur, Food Network personality and author Mario Batali to Google’s New York office to discuss his new book, “Italian Grill”. Raised in Seattle, Mario’s initial career path had him studying the golden age of Spanish theater at Rutgers University. Soon after graduating he took his first bit of culinary training at Le Cordon Bleu in London, from which he withdrew almost immediately due to a “lack of interest.” An apprenticeship with London’s legendary chef Marco Pierre White and three years of intense culinary training in the Northern Italian Village of Borgo Capanne, (population 200) gave him the essential skills and knowledge to return to his native US, anxious to plant his orange-clogged foot firmly in the behinds of the checkered tablecloth-Italian restaurant establishment. Among his many accolades, Mario was named “Man of the Year” in the chef category by GQ Magazine in 1999. In 2002, he won the James Beard Foundation’s “Best Chef: New York City” award and in 2005 the James Beard Foundation awarded Mario “Outstanding Chef of the Year.” Mario is also one of the recipients of the 2001 D’Artagnan Cervena Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America, a prestigious lifetime achievement award. Mario Batali has created a thriving restaurant empire and has established himself as a top restaurateur. Together with his partner Joe Bastianich, he operates seven New York City ...
