If you're training for a marathon, your most important piece of running gear is the right pair of running shoes for your foot type. Yesterday at PICNIC Nike Techlab's Michael Tchao gave a great talk on their history of integrating technology and sports. Right now Nike (and Michael) is leading the exercise industry with its NikePlus product. The first technology-running product was a bit awkward. As described in a 1987 article by the Seattle-PI One of the newest units is the Monitor, introduced by Nike just last month. Not yet tested by consumer or user groups, the Monitor is a $225 investment that wires chest-strap heart sensors to a waist unit that uses ultra-sound burglar-alarm technology to track pace and mileage. Indeed, the Monitor is first a distance pacer - a fancy pedometer. The heart-rate sensor comes extra. Pay $200 for the pacer alone, or add $25 for the chest strap. It uses a female voice to communicate data through stereo headphones. We've come along way if we are now using accelerometers instead of sonar to measure distance. In fact the product has come along so far that their are now virtual races happening across the world -- all facilitated by the NikePlus system. The NikePlus combines a Nike accelerometer (no heart-rate monitor) with an iPod for feedback and data storage. The feedback comes in the form of stats (speed, distance, and estimated calories) and music (to help you meet your goals via Power Songs or encouragement via recordings of Lance Armstrong). After the run all of this data is uploaded to the NikePlus community site. Once uploa ...

Hey guys, I'm currently training for my first marathon which is on October 5th. I decided that I don't want to lose my progress so I thought I'd continue training and do another marathon in my region which is just under 2 months after the first one. First, is this something that's not recommended? I know there's a lot of hardcore people here but this is my first one and I don't want to push myself too much. And if this is an OK practice, what's recommended for rest/recovery after the marathon before really hitting training hard for the second? Any recommendations? ...

Fall is the time for Marathons and some runners will make a dash to the airport just for the chance to chase the finish line in another city. Last week was the Berlin Marathon in Germany, next week is the Chicago Marathon (Baltimore's too, but you don't need to jet to that). A colleague of mine, Helen Jones, is a regular marathoner and last spring, she ran her second Boston Marathon. I asked her to give us some tips on traveling to a marathon. Helen says as with any travel, planning is key. Here are her 10 tips: 1) Make your hotel reservation far in advance. You can always cancel if you get injured during training or decide not to race. 2) Look for a hotel near the finish line. You don’t want to have to walk a mile after running 26.2. 3) When flying to your marathon destination, always wear your running shoes or carry them on board. It’s hard to run a race when you’re in Cincinnati and your broken-in shoes are in Atlanta - in your checked suitcase that went astray. (Photo: The Berlin Marathon took place in Germany on Sept. 28. Dick Beardsley is the only banquet speaker I've ever heard who silenced even the clicking of silverware on the desert plates. Earnest and kinetic, he held me spellbound from his opening line, "Hi, I'm Dick, and I'm a drug addict." Perhaps, it was confusion that gripped me initially. I was expecting him to talk solely about running, and his great duel with Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon. At the time, in early May, I was largely ignorant of his life story - the accidents that nearly crippled him, the drug addiction, the felony conviction and the rehabilitation. Much of that I learned later by reading John Brant's "Duel in the Sun," and I was fortunate to glean a bit more in a phone conversation with the Minnesota native, in advance of his appearance this weekend at the Lakefront Marathon. Some of that interview appeared in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, but Beardsley, 52, and his wisdom cover so much ground, it's worth adding a bit more. On addiction and perseverance : "It's about not giving up and about pushing ahead, even if it's little steps at a time. I use a lot of running analogies to get the point across, but it doesn't matter if you're a runner, a businessman, a housewife, a stay-at-home dad, whatever, we all have days when things are going so well or we have little setbacks. "I remember sitting there in treatment, not knowing if I'd ever, ever get better and feel like the old Dick Beardsley, and when you l ...
