Paint your nails Jungle Red and get in line. Nobody rocks an entrance quite like Eva Mendes. In a blue clingy dress that accentuates every curve, with flawless skin and salon perfect hair that flips with each step forward in her runway-like walk, the addition of the color Jungle Red mixed by Manicurist Tanya (Debi Mazur) to her fingernails seems superfluous. Yet, it’s precisely this... ...

"I wondered why the baseball was getting bigger. Then it hit me." "Police were called to a day care where a 3-year-old was resisting a rest." "Did you hear about the guy whose whole left side was cut off? He's all right now." "To write with a broken pencil is pointless." OK, OK, lighten up on the eye-rolling. I didn't say those things. I wrote them — without a pencil, broken or otherwise — but I didn't think them up. They came to me in one of those mass e-mailings you get from friends and relatives. "Subject: Lexophiles aka Punsters," the e-mail said. "The short fortuneteller who escaped from prison was a small medium at large." "A thief who stole a calendar got 12 months." "When the smog lifts in Los Angeles, U.C.L.A." "The math professor went crazy with the blackboard. He did a number on it!" Get it? This column is pretty "punny," isn't it? That's not a pun. Some people think puns aren't even funny. But those who do find them humorous usually think they're hilarious. And while this seems more like a confession than a boast about an interest, I'm sort of fond of puns myself. I guess that's why I'm forcing four more from the e-mail onto you. "The professor discovered that her theory of earthquakes was on shaky ground." "The dead batteries were given out free of charge." "A dentist and a Manicurist fought tooth and nail." "A bicycle can't stand alone; it is just two-tired." A literary view English essayist Charles Lamb perhaps put ...

By Priscilla Beth Baker September 30, 2008 It is difficult to imagine a film that can make even Annette Bening look bad, but The Women is that film. Writer and director Diane English sought to re-make George Cukor's 1939 classic of the same name. Having not seen the original, I can only speak to the tedious, dull disaster that is the second one. Meet Mary Haines (Meg Ryan), a talented fashion designer who has settled for working for her father's company making sketches instead of following her own dreams, but seems quite happy to do it until her father fires her. Things change too when Saks Manicurist (Debi Mazar) gossips to Mary's best friend Sylvie (Annette Bening) about Mary's husband Steven and his affair with perfume spritzer-girl Crystal (Eva Mendes). ...

This weekend, UK paper the Telegraph caught up with every guy's worst nightmare, Lorena Bobbit. She talked about what she's up to fifteen years (!) after she delivered her that painful chop-n-throw to then husband, John Wayne Bobbitt. She shares her opinion on the real estate market and her current boyfriend (brave!) confuses Joe Biden with Osama Bin Laden. Telegraph : Both Lorena and [her boyfriend, Greg] Bellinger work for a local estate agent and are very glum about the current market. Then we drift on to politics. Bellinger reckons it is a good thing Obama has chosen 'bin Laden' as a running mate: I assume he means Joe Biden. Next we study the menu: Lorena decides on a small cappuccino - 'I can't have a large one otherwise I'll get shaky' - and a wild-mushroom omelette. Bellinger orders almost everything else on the menu. Lorena, now 39 and using her maiden name, Gallo (which translates as 'cockerel'), is wearing a royal-blue shirt with matching royal-blue eyeliner, a black pencil skirt and wedge sandals. She wears a gold heart on a chain and has small, expressive hands - perfectly manicured (she still works part-time as a Manicurist, the profession she had at the time of 'the incident'). Another fun detail: If I went to a restaurant, people would wait for me to pick up a knife to cut a hamburger, then take a picture. I'd say: "That's not very tasty."' She hesitates. 'I mean tasteful.' ...

Philosophically, the very existence of The Women is something that makes me cheer. As its title suggests, it's a movie full of only women — and many of them "women of a certain age," at that. Director and screenwriter Diane English spent years trying to steer her remake of George Cukor's 1939 classic to the screen, and I respect and admire her determination. A powerful remake of The Women could have sent yet another signal that moviegoers want to see women on screen in all their beautiful, imperfect, daffy, lovable, clueless, fantastic glory. On screen, though, The Women disappoints to an almost depressing degree. It's not an outright disaster; there are good moments from nearly everyone in the gigantic cast. But it's not screwball enough to honor its '30s movie heritage, not clever enough to make for a fun night out at the theater. And its own message on women is utterly conflicted, threatening to undermine the potential positive impact of bringing an all-female movie to the big screen. Meg Ryan stars as Mary Haines, whose life comes complete with adorable daughter, fabulous luncheons, and blooming garden she planted herself. If there are cracks in that shiny veneer, she'd hardly notice; as a friend, Alex (Jada Pinkett Smith), points out, she's too busy filling them in. So it knocks her flat when she finds out — thanks to her gossipy Manicurist (Debi Mazar) — that her husband is having an affair with the Saks perfume "spritzer g ...

THE WOMEN A film review by Steve Rhodes Copyright 2008 Steve Rhodes RATING (0 TO ****):  * 1/2 Just shoot me.  THE WOMEN, a remake of a 1939 film, is set in a completely man-free Manhattan.  Filled with the shallowest women you're likely to meet, the movie is a chick flick in the worst sense of that phrase.  Sure, it's got a great cast, but this guy spent most of the movie eagerly waiting for the closing credits to start rolling so that he could beat a hasty exit. In a story in which men are heard of but quite literally never seen, the movie starts with Sylvia Fowler (Annette Bening) prowling the aisles of her favorite luxury retailer, Saks.  As she cuddles her little dog close to her bosom, she talks to one of her girlfriends on her cell phone.  The topic of conversation concerns catty remarks that Sylvia is making about other women's wardrobes. But the fireworks really start when Sylvia gets her nails done.  Tanya (Debi Mazar), Sylvia's new Manicurist, is a chatterbox and a non-stop gossip machine.  Tanya tells Sylvia that a sales clerk friend of hers, Crystal Allen (Eva Mendes), is having a big affair with a rich and married hedge fund manager. Of course, the cheating guy is married to one of Sylvia's best friends, Mary Haines (Meg Ryan).  This means that Sylvia will have to tell all of Mary's read more ...
