Hey folks! I scored a Inspiron 4150 for $50, I had some memory laying around that fitted it, so I ended up with a 1.7 Ghz laptop with 512 Mb of RAM for next to nothing. Soooo.... it was time to feed my linux hunger. I have decided on Windows Vista x64 on my main computer because of gaming, but since I wasn't going to do a lot of gaming on this laptop, and Windows XP is just so.... boring, I decided on linux. I have tested Kubuntu 8.04, Debian 4.04r3, OpenSUSE 10.3, and Mandriva Linux 2008.1 Spring, and I must say I am VERY impressed by it. This laptop has an ATI Radeon Mobility in it, and Mandriva 2008 was the only distro that was able to configure compiz out of the box on KDE 3.5, and believe it or not, it actually runs pretty smoothly on this PoS laptop! I discovered one bug so far, when you maximize a window the title bar of it isn't drawn and stays all white. But I figured out quite quickly that was a compiz bug, and it is fixable by creating a file called /etc/drirc and adding some info to it. Mandriva 2008 has a very sleek look, the shutdown and startup are mostly graphical, and it installs from the live cd. Compiz worked for me from the live cd, where I had to struggle to make it work on kubuntu, and couldn't get it to work on debian. Are there any other users on here using Mandriva? What do you think about this distro? -- "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose bot ...

In this article I will show how to install and configure fail2ban on a Mandriva 2008.1 system. Fail2ban is a tool that observes login attempts to various services, e.g. SSH, FTP, SMTP, Apache, etc., and if it finds failed login attempts again and again from the same IP address or host, fail2ban stops further login attempts from that IP address/host by blocking it with an iptables firewall rule. ...

LinuxSecurity.com : Chris Evans of the Google Security Team found a vulnerability in the RC4 processing code in libxslt that did not properly handle corrupted key information. A remote attacker able to make an application linked against libxslt process malicious XML input could cause the application to crash or possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the application in question (CVE-2008-2935). The updated packages have been patched to correct this issue. ...

LinuxSecurity.com : Drew Yaro of the Apple Product Security Team reported multiple uses of uninitialized values in libtiff's LZW compression algorithm decoder. LinuxSecurity.com : Kees Cook of Ubuntu security found a flaw in how poppler prior to version 0.6 displayed malformed fonts embedded in PDF files. This vulnerability also affected older versions of kpdf, so the updated packages have been patched to correct this issue. ...
