One of the questions raised by the trade of Sean Mahan to the Bucs Tuesday was whether it meant the team was considering using him at right guard instead of rookie Jeremy Zuttah during Davin Joseph's absence. We also wondered, so we asked. Offensive line coach Bill Muir dispelled any notion that Mahan would surpass Zuttah, at least initially. It's pretty much a vote of confidence for Zuttah. "Jeremy Zuttah's been with us from the beginning," Muir said. "We're very pleased with the progress he's made. Obviously, he's not where we want him to be at this time, but we're glad he's not where he was when he got here. I think, ffdffhat we've done is add a player who has experience starting at center and at guard. So, I think you have to look at it for face value." But Muir pointed out that Mahan is still well-versed in the system having been away from the Bucs and with the Steelers for just one season. Those are the four men who are Captain Paul Azinger's hand picked soldiers for the Ryder Cup at Valhalla. Let's talk a little bit about each of the players. 1. Steve Stricker - almost an automatic pick and someone I had seen as a part of this all along. He got bounced from automatically qualifying when Ben Curtis took 2nd at the PGA Championship. As TGC alluded to last night, had the qualifying ended with the Deutsche Bank, Stricker would have made the team and bounced Boo Weekley. 2. JB Holmes - a shocker pick for me even though everyone knew he would be on the team. Holmes has a win this year (same place as his first win, FBR Open) but really hasn't done much else this except be from Kentucky, know Valhalla very well, and hit the ball erratically. 3. Hunter Mahan - a guy who I had penciled in, even after his Golf Magazine interview that really wasn't that big of a deal. He posted a couple of nice finishes in the past two weeks, and I'm sure the opening 62 in Boston pretty much locked it up for him. In his last seven starts, he has 4 top 15 finishes...and 2 MCs. 4. Chad Campbell - biggest surprise of the bunch, really. Finished 20th in the standings but found his way onto the team. Had a 2nd in Houston and a 3rd in Milwaukee (beat Kenny Perry!), but has also missed 8 cuts this year. I guess a T7 this weekend got him in? One day in the newspaper, you could see a photo of Stalin with a couple of party underlings, and then the next month, the same photo would appear with one of the commisars airbrushed out . When talking about the Steelers long lines of Pro Bowl centers, maybe we can just airbrush out the 2007 season. The Steelers officially flushed the Sean Mahan era by dealing to the Bucs for a draft pick--no word on the pick, but if the Steelers got any thing better than a seventh rounder they got a steal. By getting a draft pick for Mahan, the Steelers at least have gotten something for a player who was woefully unable to live up to the expectations that come with being center in Pittsburgh. It's safe to say that when we're thinking back, the lineage of Ray Mansfield-Mike Webster-Dermonti Dawson-Jeff Hartings will not include Mahan. I don't want to pile on too much, as Kendall Simmons and Willie Colon were nearly as bad last year (although Colon could get better in his second season as a starter). But by getting rid of Mahan, the Steelers will lose very little--new backup center Darnell Stapleton has a chance to end being just as good as Mahan if not better in the near future, and now the Steelers can sign a third tight end, re-sign cornerback/safety Roy Lewis or scout the practice squads for a young defensi ...
