Every week on AMC TV's Mad Men , the Men and women at Sterling Cooper create and design retro 1960s ad campaigns, all while obsessively chain-smoking, drinking and womanizing. Wired.com asks a real-world ad man about the show’s realism and relevance to the advertising industry today. ...

There are so many reasons to be hopelessly in love with the show Mad Men . The cool 60’s vibe, all of the advertising references, beautiful women, handsome Men, typography, drama… Not to mention Don Draper. But when your favorite Sterling Cooper employees start following you on Twitter, -it’s almost too good. side note: This is the power of Twitter, -and the internet in general. Even though in this case it’s a weird, psuedo-connection, it’s still a connection. It really does make someone’s day when they get to interact at some level with a brand that they admire. It’s like getting the email back from Steve Jobs, and pretending in your head that this is the one that he really answered himself. It just feels good. And such a simple thing on AMC’ s part. Just a click of a button, and they made fans for life, and got a free blog post out of the deal. That’s the kind of advertising you simply can’t get with money… Class-A move AMC. Never forget what Don Draper said about advertising: “Advertising is based on one thing: happiness. And do you know what happiness is? Happiness is the smell of a new car. It’s freedom from fear. It’s a billboard on the side of a road that screams with reassurance that whatever you’re doing is OK. You are OK. ” ...

If the show Mad Men has taught me anything, it’s that women’s undergarments should be lacy and super sexy. Nothing too revealing nor outlandish, but just the right amount of spice and sophistication to invoke curiosity. Though trends these days lean more towards wearing next-to-nothing at all, there are still some options out there that evoke that classic 50s style which Mad Men showcases so well. So instead of squeezing into a skimpy, barely-there floss-inspired thong, why not go for a change of pace and dawn some satin and lace. Pin up your hair into some dramatic curls, put on some luscious red lipstick, and slip into one of these: See more of the Underthings list by fatpinkchicken at ThisNext. ...

When "Mad Men" won an Emmy for best dramatic series a couple weeks ago, the audience for this low-key, early-60s period series about a New York advertising agency took off. Catching up with the characters and their story lines takes some time, in part because the AMC program is hardly a firecracker - it's slow paced, lacks shoot-outs, and has nothing to do with hospitals or forensics. Although I've been watching it from the beginning (a Terry Gross interview with series creator Matthew Weiner in August 2007 caught my attention), and I usually enjoy it, I do think it could use a bit more, well, vigor . Like for instance some jokes, and background music, both of which are in short supply. It may be absence of humor and music is intentional, to distance the show from its most obvious inspiration: the early-1960s musical comedy " How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying ." "How to Succeed" was a Broadway stage success, premiering on stage in 1961 and winning 7 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer, in exactly the same time frame that "Mad Men" is supposed to take place. The music and lyrics were by Frank Loesser , whose biggest hit was "Guys and Dolls," and who also penned such standards as "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Heart and Soul." The original stage cast featured Robert Morse as J. Pierpont Finch, the young window washer who rises to the top of the World Wide Wicket Co. by following the advice of the eponymous paperback he's reading. ...

Spoiler alert: Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) loses the ponytail! Here's AMC's requisite episode recap, which, actually, is as forthcoming as they've been all season: "On a business trip to Los Angeles, Don becomes acquainted with some exciting new friends. Peggy looks for romance at work. Duck starts thinking about the future of Sterling Cooper." Despite a curious detour, things happen and often in this episode, since we're coming down to the wire as far as season two goes. Don (Jon Hamm), out in the land of swimming pools/movie stars, restrains from being tempted - for, oh, a minute or two - and then finds himself surrounded by Euro jet trash. (Check that: "Exciting" Euro jet trash.) Pete's (Vincent Kartheiser) left to fend for himself in L.A. (does sneaky Pete or ambitious Pete take charge, and does he get to choose?), while Roger (John Slattery) makes what is quite likely a monumentally bad decision (how did a guy who lets Little Roger do all his thinking become so successful?), and Peggy's invitation to see Bob Dylan in the Village proves a double-edged sword (particularly for her coif). Meanwhile, Duck (Mark Moses) negotiates a huge deal - but will Sterling Cooper be the beneficiary? Another first: Don invites his shadowy past into his present. And even I'm not sure what that will mean. Again: Another episode where there's something in the water, where characters seem to be floating along, incapable of grasping something real due to al ...

Though I can’t seem to convert my friends onto the show, I’m a big fan of Mad Men. I love the tone of the show, the calm, cool narratives and the smoky, politically-incorrect dynamic of the office. Having said that, they mess up the typography a lot. Mark Simonson has a great little article outlining [...] ...
