Legit Reviews: Ouch. Tough luck for St. Ann's Warehouse that much of the theatrical thunder for its hugely ambitious production of "TR Warszawa's Macbeth 2008" was snatched away by the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which got there first with Chichester Festival Theater's brutalist version of Shakespeare's drama. ...

Photo of Hecate (Danuta Stenka) and Macbeth (Cezary Kosinski) courtesy Pavel Antonov. It’s hard to imagine a production of Macbeth with more sound and fury than the outré adaptation currently battering audiences on the Brooklyn waterfront in DUMBO. Two parts Shakespeare and one part Ridley Scott, this visionary spectacle is the work of Polish director Grzegorz Jarzyna and the TR Warszawa theater company; it’s being staged outdoors in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge with a cast of 32 actors on a 36-foot-high set built specifically for the production. Anyone passing by the 19th century tobacco warehouse where it’s being staged will probably have no idea that just on the other side of that old brick wall swirls a maelstrom of machine gun fire, helicopters, Elvis impersonators, smoke, and beheadings. Because the roaring Brooklyn Bridge traffic would have made the actors all but inaudible, the production’s exquisite sound design is channeled through headphones provided for each audience member. The effect is enthralling, lending the cinematic action an arresting immediacy, as everything from the pop of gunfire to the sinister whispers of Hecate are fully birthed inside the spectators’ heads. Eat your heart out, IMAX. Heavily stylized renditions of Shakespeare often collapse under the weight of their own grandiose concepts, but in this case Jarzyna and company have managed to boldly extract the essence of Macbeth – the principals’ ma ...

In theatrical circles, it is considered bad luck to speak the title of one of Shakespeare’s best-known plays, “Macbeth,” within the confines of a theater. Just as actors say “break a leg” rather than “good luck” before a performance, they say “The Scottish Play” rather than the actual title. (Paradoxically, it is OK to say the name of the play’s central character, Macbeth.) During rehearsals, if someone slips and speaks the name of the play, he is made to run around the outside of the theater seven times to reverse the curse. Perhaps emboldened by the fact that they don’t perform in an actual theater, the Gazebo Players will nevertheless court disaster with their seventh annual Shakespeare in the Park production of “The Scottish Play,” better known as “Macbeth.” Edward Eaton, who directed last summer’s production of “Romeo and Juliet,” returns to Gazebo Players to direct “Macbeth.” Shakespeare’s script has close to 30 characters, many of whom appear in only one scene. Eaton has adapted the play so that it requires only 13 actors, with most actors playing multiple roles. In contrast to “Romeo and Juliet,” which Eaton staged as a comedy that takes an accidental wrong turn, this production of “Macbeth” will be a tragedy driven by supernatural forces and the dangers of human ambition. The production will also feature swordfights, drunken servants, scheming witches, trophy wives and clashing armies. Dover resident Rachel Harmon is appe ...

Review: Shakespeare directors, perhaps bored by the sheer repetition of it all, often introduce some high concept just to stoke their own artistic interest. "Cymbeline in Space," anyone?
