Fresh off his first victory as an Islander in Saturday night’s 5-2 decision over St. Louis in the home opener, backup goaltender Joey MacDonald was on the ice and working hard in an optional practice this afternoon at the practice facility in Syosset. I didn’t see Rick DiPietro, but I know he was at Iceworks for treatment of the undisclosed condition that has restricted him to backup duty to start the season. Based on the fact DiPietro hasn’t skated since Friday morning before the season opener in New Jersey, it appears likely MacDonald will be back in goal for the Islanders’ 2 p.m. Kids’ Day game against Buffalo tomorrow at Nassau Coliseum. Speaking hypothetically on Saturday night, coach Scott Gordon mentioned a scenario in which DiPietro missed the first three games in order to build his base of conditioning to prepare for a two-game Florida trip later this week. It’s a good bet that hypothetical will become reality. Yes, DiPietro is that close to being ready to start. Injury update Rehabbing defenseman Chris Campoli and center Mike Sillinger were among the players who skated today. Bourne Conservation Commission Chairman Bruce MacDonald has resigned following an official inquiry into his residency status. No reason for the resignation was given in an e-mail message from MacDonald to Conservation Agent Brendan Mullaney. Town Administrator Thomas Guerino had instructed Mullaney to inquire about MacDonald’s residency after selectmen were asked about it. The result was the resignation notice. It came just days after commission member B. Paul Bushueff also resigned, citing family issues. The resignation also comes two weeks before the commission was set on Oct. 16 to explore Bourne Community Boating Inc. controversial plans to use a tract off Leeward Road on Mashnee Island for program logistical purposes. MacDonald during his tenure proved instrumental in helping devise new pier and dock regulations and guide them to Town Meeting approval. He was recently reappointed to the commission. Guerino said inquiries were made to selectmen after it was learned MacDonald sold his home in Cataumet and moved to Sagamore Beach while also constructing a house in Newton. ... He was built up by the internet, but he isn't that far along as an MMA fighter. James Thompson exposed him on the ground in his last fight, and Seth Petruzelli finished him off. The referee wasn't able to save him this time! I think the fact that EliteXC is paying a guy like Kimbo $500,000 is almost insulting to other "real" mixed martial artists. If I were Jake Shields, who is a legitimate top 170-pound fighter, I would be very upset and angry. He's supposed to be a cornerstone of the organization and he's getting paid $50,000. That's a slap in the face for Shields, and pretty much every other top fighter there. I guess the exception would be Andrei Arlovski. From his standpoint, leaving the UFC was probably the best thing for him. He got $750,000 for his Affliction fight, now $500,000 for EliteXC fight. And for fighting two guys that aren't exactly at his caliber. Paul Daley's performance was disappointing. He may have Semtex in his hands, but he has bricks in his feet and back, because he's horrible on the ground. Overall, it was a pretty disappointing card for CBS.
