A few years ago, while in business school, we wrote a paper on Apple’s growth and their opportunity to take their 3-4% Market Share and turn it into a double digit Market Share. While it's significant that the Mac has risen to nearly 8 percent Market Share in operating systems (with Windows dropping from its lofty heights to a still-lofty 90.66 percent), according to Net Applications, I find the iPhone's rapid increase even more impressive: iPhone Browser Market Share Climbs ... ...

No Mac version yet and a public panning from WSJ oracle Walt Mossberg , but Google's (GOOG) Chrome already owns 1% of the Web browser Market. Actually, 1.13% of the Market as of 1 p.m EDT, according to Net Applications , which is tracking Chrome usage by the hour. Similarly, StatCounter is giving Chrome 1.15% of the browser Market as of today, which means it's stalking Apple's (AAPL) Safari (2.48% Share) fast. This is an impressive feat, but let's see where it is in a week, once tire-kicking early adopters have decided whether to stick with Chrome or go back to Firefox, Safari, or Microsoft's IE. Here at SAI, we're seeing 6% of our visits on Google Chrome so far today, compared to 41% from Firefox. Here's Net Applications' hourly chart: ...

Following in the dubious footsteps of such notables as Jim Louderbeck , Don Reisinger over at Ars Technica has come up with a “unique” proposition for Apple , pretty much guaranteeing that if Apple follows his advice, they’ll be propelled to success and a much higher Market Share. Wanna know what this gem of an idea is? Why, license Mac OS X, of course, and let the clones thrive! Yeah, I know—it hadn’t ever occurred to me either. Apple’s unprecedented success over the past few years has propelled the company from its place as just another tech company to the most respected brand in the entire industry. But for all its success, it’s still a distant second in its battle for operating system dominance. With just 8 percent Market Share, Apple has significant work to do if it wants to catch up to Microsoft and solidify Mac OS X as a major force in the software business. Right in the first paragraph, Reisinger reveals that the whole premise of the article is flawed. Why does Apple need to compete with Microsoft anyway? Right now, Apple is widely regarded as the coolest company around while Microsoft has earned itself the reputation of a staid corporation that churns out lousy products and can’t keep up with the times. Sure, they earn several times more than Apple does but Apple is still making money hand over fist, and that gap isn’t going to change dramatically anytime soon, no matter what Apple or anybody else does. Wanting Apple to makes ...

You’ll probably want to hold onto something, because this news might shake you! According to the latest survey data by Net Applications , Safari has hit a new high of 6.37% Market Share. This is only logical, of course—more Mac sales mean more people treading over to the light side and more people clicking on that blue compass. But ask me what it stole these extra Market Share points from? Why, thanks for asking! Safari’s Market Share increase comes at the expense of Internet Explorer, which—continuing its downward trend—now commands only 72.15% of the web browser Market Share. At 19.73%, Firefox remains at a comfortable middle ground, too low to be an immediate thread to Internet Explorer and a tad too high to feel any heat from Safari. Now that Google Chrome is also into the fray , and has apparently already grabbed 1% of the Market , it’ll be interesting to see how things turn out for Internet Explorer. Not many Windows users might feel the urge to switch to Safari, given its origin and the feeling among Windows users that Apple software does not work well on Windows, but everyone loves Google [It’s just like Raymond! -DM] , and the more people see the link to download it on the Google homepage, the more we’ll see it spread. And since Chrome is primarily powered by WebKit, the open source rendering engine that is at the core of Safari, every new Chrome user in the world is a small step toward more and more sites becoming compat ...

Up until quite recently, a Macintosh user was able to remain mostly free from harmful worms and viruses on their computers This is partially because of the fact that as Mac OS X is Unix-based, the operating system is relatively secure against such attacks Another possible reason could have to do with the fact that Mac has had a smaller Market Share than its main competitor... ...

Just when everyones is getting used to news of Firefox eating into Microsoft Internet Explorer’s Market Share, along comes Google to upset the natural order of things. This new open source browser will compete with the two mentioned browsers, and this can’t but make me wonder whether Google Chrome will be to Firefox as what Firefox is to IE, quietly nibbling away at the Market Share? It will be interesting to see how this lightweight and fast browser will take off. It will be launched as a beta for Windows machines only in more than 100 countries, although there are plans to release both Mac and Linux versions.
