We sometimes argue in the BBG editor's chatroom about whether the iPhone / iPod Touch can really make any headway against the DS or PSP as a Gaming platform. Ultimately, we all agree that it's not really a Gaming device that can compete with a dedicated handheld — although Joel is much more optimistic about it than the rest of us — but that's not to say it can't have excellent, innovative games on it. But now Apple is positioning the iPod Touch as exactly that: a mobile game platform. Steve Jobs described it during the "Let's Rock" event as "the best portable device for playing games." Uh, no. Hell, even Cult of Mac is skeptical: they've just posted a great breakdown of all the reasons why an iPod Touch is nothing of the sort. The Nintendo DS was designed as a Gaming device, and despite Sony’s ‘media player’ rhetoric, so was the PSP. iPod touch was designed as a media player (or, you could argue, as a smartphone, with the phone bit subsequently being wrenched out). Apple is usually very focussed, designing devices and software for specific purposes, but this isn’t one of those occasions. It’s unlikely a device not designed for games can ever become a truly major Gaming platform. That's open to quibbling, of course: the iPhone and iPod Touch will certainly have excellent games and people will use them to wile away millions of hours on Gaming. That is success of a type. But it's an excellent point in its way: Gaming will always be an af ...

Hothead Games has announced that Episode 2 of Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness has officially gone gold for Windows, Mac, and Linux. In addition to that, they have also announced that the game will be priced at $14.95 (or 1200 MS Points on the XBLA). That’s five bucks less than the previous episode, for those playing along at home — guess the Penny Arcade folks took the bizarre Braid controversy to heart. This episode will pick up where the last one left off, with you, Gabe, and Tycho continuing to explore the strange occurrences in a 1920s-era steampunk society. in that regard, you can probably expect to beat up more mimes and fruit-defiling robots with your mighty rake. “Episode One was a huge investment for us and established a great base from which we built Episode Two. It allows us to focus even more on the fans in developing future games in the series,” said Hothead’s CEO, Vlad Ceraldi. “Our new game has a lot of great enhancements that were made possible by direct fan interaction and we are extremely excited to get our game into their hands and get their feedback.” No word on a release date yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know once that’s announced as well. ---Related Articles at Gaming Today:Penny Arcade Adventures Ep. 2 Due This Fall; Four More PlannedPenny Arcade Adventures Releasing Next WednesdayPenny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness: Get the PC Demo Here; Now Available on X ...

Can't afford a ticket to China to go visit the Forbidden City? Well, now all you need is your computer. IBM, which is a big believer in virtual worlds, and China's Palace Museum have created an exact replica of the 178-acre Forbidden City. After working meticulously for three years to recreate every building and thousands of major artifacts, the virtual Forbidden City is now available for download (for Windows, Mac, or Linux). It's free, although, I warn you the Mac version, at least, is a massive 275MB file. Once inside, you can choose an avatar, dress him or her up in Qing Dynasty-era robes, take virtual tours, play Go with computer-controlled characters, call up maps, explore buildings and objects that allow you to click for deeper information. The virtual world was built on a Gaming platform from Garage Games called Torque. ( I guess OpenSim wasn't good enough. No word on whether it will be interoperable with Second Life). ...

KKovac wrote: Hi guys. I have been looking for awhile now at the Mac pro, hp blackbird, and the Dell XPS. I have been trying to find a system that would allow me to play mid-range games and also use the computer has a work station. My idea with the Mac pro, was to put windows on it, for the Gaming but wasnt sure how well it would work. But on the other hand the hp blackbird and the Dell Xps are more Gaming systems then workstations. So I was wondering if anyone of you might have some advice for me. It would help if you offered a more detailed explanation of what you mean by "use the computer as a work station". AutoCAD? 3D modelling? Specific programs and functions you want out of it would be helpful. Does that mean you want a work station grade graphics card (i.e. ATI FireGL or Nvidia Quadro) rather than a Gaming grade graphics card (i.e. ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce)? A Mac Pro with Windoze installed in Bootcamp should handle "mid-range" games just fine...depending on how you define "mid-range" games (that can frequently be in the eye of the beholder). ...
