Filed under: News Here's a question for you. If MTV Games won't publish Brütal Legend , a video game about an axe wielding roadie who lives the legend of rock and roll and casts magic spells with a guitar , who will? When asked by The Cut Scene whether or not they the company would publish Tim Schafer's recently displaced title, MTV -- that's "Music Television" -- replied "We are big fans of Tim Schafer. We hope the game finds a good home." In other words: no. While Double Fine assures fans that Brütal Legend is " fine " despite getting the boot from Activision, we have to wonder just who will publish the thing. We hope a publisher is revealed soon, lest Brütal Legend 's title becomes an ironically accurate description of the game's development. [Via Joystiq ]   Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments ...

Harmonix and MTV Games announced today a very special set of downloadable content to celebrate the three day Penny Arcade Expo. The "PAX 2008 Collection", launching on September 2, 2008, contains tracks from celebrated nerd-folk artist Jonathan Coulton, nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot, and lovecraftian doomsayers The Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - all of whom will be performing at the gaming fan festival August 27th-29th. Adding to the fan-focused celebration, the Harmonix/MTV Games' proceeds from the sale of this "PAX Pack" between launch and Holiday 2008 will be donated to the Penny Arcade run Child's Play Charity in order to help out children's hospitals around the world. "We're excited that some of our favorite artists can be featured in Rock Band as a result of this pack," said Robert Khoo, Show Director for Penny Arcade Expo. "Calling attention to PAX artists and giving back to the community at the same time show why Harmonix is truly a company focused on the music and their fans above all else." The pack includes "Skullcrusher Mountain" by Jonathan Coulton, the story of a misunderstood genius and the woman he attempts to woo with monstrous creations like a half-monkey, half-pony, "Livin' on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" by MC Frontalot, Inspired by the award-winning webcomic "Achewood" and featuring Brad Sucks, and finally "Shhh...." by Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, a previously unreleased track that the nerd rockers ...

Move over Shuffleboard, cruise ship passengers are now entertaining themselves during long voyages with Rock Band. Passengers on P&O Cruises' Pacific Dawn and Pacific Sun cruise ships are encouraged to form groups and go head-to-head in Rock Band competitions against other guests, with the best rockers competing in "Battle of the Bands" showdown at the end of the trip. P&O says it has introduced Rock Band "as part of its unique and exciting passenger experience" and the fact that the highly anticipated music game is still not yet available in Australia gives it added appeal. Rock Band publisher MTV Games or distributor Electronic Arts are still yet to release any information on the game's Australian release date or price. As reported by Screen Play in June, the most likely scenario is that the original game will not be released at all, but its sequel will let newcomers download all the first game's songs. ...

People brag. People talk trash. And rapper Game has been doing a lot of that as he’s been hyping his album-promoting $100,000 “Madden” face-off against fellow rapper Bow Wow . My colleague, MTV News hip-hop reporter Shaheem Reid, has been following the hype for the face-off which will finally occur this Friday in L.A. But I’ve been skeptical. Sha’s latest story about the face-off quotes Game saying he’s the best “Madden” player in the world. Really? I didn’t believe it, even though Game gave out his PSN ID (he calls it a Gamertag even though he loves the PS3 enough to have a PS3 necklace) and challenged doubters to look at his record on EASports.com. I checked his record. It isn’t as good as he says it is. He’s not top in the world. But he’s close. As of this morning, the Game, aka PSN player “L-A-X” is #6 “Madden NFL 09″ player in the world of EA Sports.com, with a record of 174 wins, 31 losses and five Games that he didn’t finish. Note that last night, when Sha ran the story, Game’s record was 171-30, so he managed a 3-1 record in the last 16 hours. Not bad! ...

Ever wondered where Epic Games drew from when designing “Gears of War” ’s over-the-top blood and guts? We have the answer: cult classic 80s horror films. At PAX 2008, MTV Multiplayer spoke with “Gears of War 2″ artist Pete Hayes , who explained that his favorite movie genre, horror, was the culprit. “That’s kind of the tone that I drew inspiration from and that’s kind of the tone that I wanted it to be in the game,” said Hayes. “Other Games that are more slow and methodical and creepy and scary, I still enjoy playing them, but I really like the way that it is in ‘Gears’ and that it’s not serious. It’s more fun.” So, what are his favorite horror movies? Good thing you asked! “I’ve got a ton of them,” he said. “All of the original kind of ‘Day of the Dead’ zombie movies. Obviously, ‘Evil Dead.’ Huge fan. ‘Dead Alive’ was kind of comedy gore. The early Peter Jackson stuff like ‘Bad Taste’ and things along those lines. For me, my stuff is very old school and it’s when gore was fun and gore was just that kind of surprise effect.” Hayes admits he’s “not a fan of real-life gore” and movies that aim for grossing the viewer out with realistic violence. He pointed to “Hostel” (commonly referred to as “torture porn” ) as a recent example. When it came time to develop the gore for “Gears of War,” he simply remembered what he liked in his favorite movies. “Honestly, I didn’t do much research at all,” he said. “It’s not like I was sitting there ...

There’s no doubt one of the fiercest rivalries for attention on the floors of PAX 2008 is between “Guitar Hero: World Tour” and “Rock Band 2.” Both Activision and MTV Games have put together elaborate stage setups to draw wanna-be musicians. While there’s only one “Rock Band 2″ setup, there’s more people around it — but there are multiple stations for checking out “Guitar Hero: World Tour.” Needless to say, neither setup has had any trouble filling their space with people. ...

The artists who rocked out at this year's Penny Arcade Expo will also be performing right in your living room! Okay, not literally, but Harmonix and MTV Games have announced that tracks from three of the PAX 2008 bands will be released as downloadable tracks for Rock Band ( Xbox 360 , PlayStation 3 ). The tracks, which will become available on the Xbox Live Marketplace today and on the PlayStation Network on Thursday, are as follows: Jonathan Coulton - "Skullcrusher Mountain" MC Frontalot - "Livin' on the Corner of Dude and Catastrophe" Darkest of the Hillside Thickets - "Shhh " Each track will be available for 99 cents or 80 Microsoft Points . The  Xbox 360 price cut that I first said was likely way back in July and has recently been predicted by every videogame blog based on leaked retail circulars is finally official. As expected, it's $200 for the hard-drive free arcade version, $300 for the standard version, and $400 for the Elite with a big ass hard drive. (If I were like a certain other blogger, I'd be yelling "toldja!." But suffice it to say that Cut Scene readers should have been expecting this for almost two months.) While serious gamers will appreciate the price cuts on the standard version and elite, it's very apparent that Microsoft is emphasizing the new price of the arcade version. The press release is pretty dramatically titled " The Moment Is Now: At $199, Xbox 360 Invites Everyone to Play." But it's the first sentence that really intrigues me: Imagine if friends and families had the ability to instantly watch movies from Netflix, live out their musical fantasies through "Rock Band 2" (Harmonix/MTV Games) and "Lips" (iNiS Corp./Microsoft Game Studios), star in their own Hollywood classics with "You're in the Movies," or have the power to never miss the latest episode of "Heroes" -- all from one device, starting at $199. They're selling a videogame console and the very first feature mentioned is streaming movies. The only Games mentioned here are all casual titles based on music or movies. In fact, you have to go all the way down to the second half of the fift ...

Raptr , a new online social gaming startup founded by Xfire co-founder and professional gamer Dennis Fong, is launching tonight and had received $12 million in its first round of funding. The round was led by Accel Partners and the Founders Fund. The service is a small download that then plugs into other Games across multiple platforms including PC, Mac, Xbox Live, Facebook and Flash, and some of the Games on Wii and PS3. As for the social aspects, people can track themselves and their friends' real-time game play via social networking services like Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed. Xfire was sold to to MTV Networks ( NYSE: VIA ) for $110 million about three years ago. Fong left and started Raptr last year. Check out the best business jobs in digital media.
