Sustainable Futures - from environmentalresearchweb - Aug 14, 2008 Solar dish scales down A group of Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, has developed a small, easy to make, cost-efficient solar dish that might be mass produced by the company they have set up, RawSolar. The dish consists of a 12-foot wide, mirrored parabola that concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1000. Attached to the dish's centre is a coil of copper tubing 12 foot long that has water running through it. When the dish is pointing directly towards the sun, the water in the coil instantaneously heats up to form steam. This is because the sun's rays converge onto the copper coil, providing intense energy. The steam comes out of the far end of the tube under the dish. Led by Spencer Ahrens, the Students hope that RawSolar will one day mass produce the dishes. They could be set up in large arrays to provide steam for heating, industrial processes, generating electricity, or even air conditioning. The beauty of the new dish lies in its size – it is smaller than conventional dishes and so requires less support structure, which means it costs less, too. It is also robust (it has already survived a thunderstorm), uses easily-available, off-the-shelf parts and was made by hand, explains team member Matt Ritter. The structure was based on a design by Doug Wood, an inventor based in Washington state. Wood patented key parts of his design – the rights ... Source: manik1383.wordpress.com --- 15 days ago

The Center for Materials Science and Enginering (CMSE) has launched a new collaboration with Roxbury Community College and with Bunker Hill Community College, both minority-rich two-year colleges, to engage the participants in current materials research. We view this as a first step in building a relationship with community colleges in the Boston area that enroll a higher percentage of underserved Students. The primary goal of this program is to encourage a significant number of community college undergraduates to pursue careers in science and engineering. Students spend ten weeks during the summer working on CMSE research as part of a faculty-led research group, similar to our REU summer internship program. The CCP Students participate in all REU meetings and activities. In addition, three separate meetings of these Students with the MRSEC director and staff are devoted to addressing their concerns about research, seeing that they are comfortably assimilated into their research groups, and getting feedback on the program. At the conclusion of the summer, the Students present posters on their research at a summer programs poster session, attended by the MIT community. Faculty at these colleges take primary responsibility for the selection of Students for this program, who are chosen on the basis of their interest, academic preparation, and faculty recommendation. The RCC Students choose their research projects from several presented b ... Source: cms.mit.edu --- 5 days ago
This presentation / lecture / infomercial examines the nature and implications of object performance both as a global cultural tradition and as a contemporary medium that dominates our culture. While performing objects traditionally include puppets, masks, icons, and other "things", the more recent innovations of film, television, and the internet can also be seen as aspects of our need to play with stuff. In all cases, the central dynamic of this form involves a focus on the material world instead of humans. The talk will be accompanied by images from 20th-century avant-garde film and performance work. John Bell began his performance work with Bread and Puppet Theater, after which he earned a Ph.D. in theater history at Columbia University. He is a founding member of the award-winning Great Small Works theater company of Brooklyn, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, and Director of the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut. This spring he will be directing a "Living Newspaper"-style production about the politics of global healthcare with MIT Students. His latest book, American Puppet Modernism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), examines particular moments of puppet, mask, and object theater in the United States over the past 150 years. He is a trombonist with the Somerville-based Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band, and organizer of the upcoming October 12th HONK! ... Source: ilp-www.mit.edu --- 10 hours ago
