Sustainable Futures - from environmentalresearchweb - Aug 14, 2008 Solar dish scales down A group of Students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US, has developed a small, easy to make, cost-efficient solar dish that might be mass produced by the company they have set up, RawSolar. The dish consists of a 12-foot wide, mirrored parabola that concentrates sunlight by a factor of 1000. Attached to the dish's centre is a coil of copper tubing 12 foot long that has water running through it. When the dish is pointing directly towards the sun, the water in the coil instantaneously heats up to form steam. This is because the sun's rays converge onto the copper coil, providing intense energy. The steam comes out of the far end of the tube under the dish. Led by Spencer Ahrens, the Students hope that RawSolar will one day mass produce the dishes. They could be set up in large arrays to provide steam for heating, industrial processes, generating electricity, or even air conditioning. The beauty of the new dish lies in its size – it is smaller than conventional dishes and so requires less support structure, which means it costs less, too. It is also robust (it has already survived a thunderstorm), uses easily-available, off-the-shelf parts and was made by hand, explains team member Matt Ritter. The structure was based on a design by Doug Wood, an inventor based in Washington state. Wood patented key parts of his design – the rights ...

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--It only took a few years for the science of information retrieval to move from an obscure academic niche to the secretive research departments at the heart of multibillion-dollar Internet companies. But one of those companies, Yahoo, is trying to give a little more power back to the professors and grad Students through a program called BOSS (Build Your Own Search Service) . The service lets academics and start-ups build their own search sites around Yahoo's search engine for free, manipulating results however they want. Two dozen researchers and Students from Stanford, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Purdue, and other universities met here at Yahoo for a day in September to hear the company's BOSS pitch, show off some ideas they've had for how to use it, and try to coax Yahoo into sharing even more information through BOSS. Overall, their response to Yahoo's program was favorable. MIT's Harr Chen would love even more data from Yahoo. (Credit: Stephen Shankland/CNET News) "It enables a lot of research that we wouldn't otherwise be able to do," said Harr Chen, an MIT researcher at the event. If it works out as hoped, Yahoo will make some money out of the program: corporate users who reach large scale with BOSS will have to show Yahoo's search ads. The academic side is a step removed from direct revenue, instead giving Yahoo some prominence with potentially influential thinkers in a market Google domina ...

Zipcar , the Cambridge-based car-sharing service that rents vehicles by the hour or the day, today announced a joint partnership to provide Zipcars on the campuses of several Massachusetts schools The schools include Brandeis University , Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences , and Worcester Polytechnic Institute , said Zipcar, which added that the partnerships with the schools brings its operations to more than 50 cities, including London, and 28 North American states and provinces. Zipcar said in a press release: "Beginning today, a total of six self-service Zipcars – two at each school – will be available for use 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The cars will be available to all staff and Students aged 18+, with gas, maintenance, insurance, and reserved parking included in low hourly and daily rates." Zipcar added that it has also partnered with Endicott College . Because of the high costs of car ownership and the meager budgets of many college Students, Zipcar regards college campuses as fertile ground for its car-sharing service. "Among the dozens of schools that have partnered with Zipcar to reduce traffic, noise, and parking demands are MIT, Columbia, Georgetown, American University, Harvard University, University of Minnesota, University of Toronto, University of North Carolina, and the University of Chicago," Zipcar said in its press release. The Center for Materials Science and Enginering (CMSE) has launched a new collaboration with Roxbury Community College and with Bunker Hill Community College, both minority-rich two-year colleges, to engage the participants in current materials research. We view this as a first step in building a relationship with community colleges in the Boston area that enroll a higher percentage of underserved Students. The primary goal of this program is to encourage a significant number of community college undergraduates to pursue careers in science and engineering. Students spend ten weeks during the summer working on CMSE research as part of a faculty-led research group, similar to our REU summer internship program. The CCP Students participate in all REU meetings and activities. In addition, three separate meetings of these Students with the MRSEC director and staff are devoted to addressing their concerns about research, seeing that they are comfortably assimilated into their research groups, and getting feedback on the program. At the conclusion of the summer, the Students present posters on their research at a summer programs poster session, attended by the MIT community. Faculty at these colleges take primary responsibility for the selection of Students for this program, who are chosen on the basis of their interest, academic preparation, and faculty recommendation. The RCC Students choose their research projects from several presented b ...

This presentation / lecture / infomercial examines the nature and implications of object performance both as a global cultural tradition and as a contemporary medium that dominates our culture. While performing objects traditionally include puppets, masks, icons, and other "things", the more recent innovations of film, television, and the internet can also be seen as aspects of our need to play with stuff. In all cases, the central dynamic of this form involves a focus on the material world instead of humans. The talk will be accompanied by images from 20th-century avant-garde film and performance work. John Bell began his performance work with Bread and Puppet Theater, after which he earned a Ph.D. in theater history at Columbia University. He is a founding member of the award-winning Great Small Works theater company of Brooklyn, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, and Director of the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry at the University of Connecticut. This spring he will be directing a "Living Newspaper"-style production about the politics of global healthcare with MIT Students. His latest book, American Puppet Modernism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008), examines particular moments of puppet, mask, and object theater in the United States over the past 150 years. He is a trombonist with the Somerville-based Second Line Social Aid and Pleasure Society Brass Band, and organizer of the upcoming October 12th HONK! ...
