anzha writes "The X Prize Foundation announced on Monday the competing teams for the 2008 Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. This year there are ten teams competing for the two prizes. The XPF has a nice matchup utility to compare the different teams' rockets. The one downside to this year though is that the competition will not have an accompanying X Prize Cup. It will be webcast, though. Full disclosure: I am on a team." Read more of this story at Slashdot. ... Source: slashdot.org --- 34 days ago
coondoggie writes to tell us that NASA has apparently successfully concluded putting the new Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter through its paces. Using vibration and rotation tests NASA scientists were able to determine the center of gravity and were also able to observe the structural integrity during the vibration tests used to simulate launch aboard an Atlas rocket. "It is expected that the LRO will by the end of the year make its way to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida for final launch preparations. The orbiter and the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, a mission to smack into the moon in search of water ice, are scheduled to launch atop an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida sometime between Feb. 27, 2009 and the end of March 2009." Price: 2,800 yen Series: Space Ship Manufacturer: Aoshima Release Date: Aug 2008 Type: Injection Description: Here's a real blast (off) from the past! This cool model kit of Apollo 11's Eagle-5 Lunar Module was first released in 1969 (the same year as the real Apollo 11 mission, the first moon landing!), and now has been re-released by the fine folks at Aoshima. The kit features fine molding, and spring-loaded landing legs for nice bouncy landings! Two interestingly shaped suited astronaut figures are provided, as is a nice nameplate and three pieces of moon surface experiments equipment. Decals are included. No clear parts are included for the windows, but that would be a very easy fix using your own pieces of scrap clear plastic (you'll have to supply your own descent stage gold foil too, if you want to be ultra-accurate!). No scale is given, but I would guesstimate based on the parts that the completed Lunar module stands somewhere between 14cm and 15cm tall. Aoshima warns that due to the age of the molds, the kit parts may have "burrs and scuffing," but all the parts looked fine to me, other than showing a wee bit of flash here and there. A great kit of a great subject! ... Source: www.maplewiki.net --- 29 days ago
