Who says an airline won’t listen these days? United ( UAUA ) is reversing a decision to end complimentary hot-meal service on European Flights from its Washington hub, following a storm of criticism. “The response from you and many of our corporate customers, even before we launched the test, told us what we would have undoubtedly learned had we proceeded – you value our hot meal service in economy class for international Flights,” United’s chief customer officer, Graham Atkinson, said in a Sept. 2 statement. (I would submit that 'value' may be too strong a word here. More likely it is just that removal of hot food en route to Europe is seen as taking the service degradation too far, even for the current era.) “In this environment, where higher costs driven by volatile fuel prices are now the norm, we must continue to tailor products and services so that we provide you with choices and competitive fares. As such, we will continue to be proactive in testing new ideas.” So, expect the service erosion to continue in more modest ways. But it’s somewhat heartening to see that this step was too draconian to pass. I suspect that large United accounts – the metro D.C. area is full of defense and tech-related firms that fly lots of people across the Atlantic – rapidly noted how their people would likely enjoy the coach experience on Air France, Lufthansa, Virgin, British Airways, etc. That, of course, is a prospect United did not want to test j ... The bloodbath begins. Troubled Italian airline Alitalia may start grounding Flights today, amid growing concerns about the impact of fuel prices. The possible collapse of Alitalia has come after thousands were left stranded by the collapse of XL Leisure Group and experts have warned that other airlines face failure because of the credit crunch. Over the weekend Germany's Lufthansa moved to take over Brussels Airlines (formally Sebena), purchasing a 45 percent stake for $91.4 million, the companies said Monday. Previously the German carrier took over Swiss International Airlines. The crisis at Alitalia and Brussels Airlines came after British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh warned that 30 more airlines could go bust before Christmas in an interview with the Irish Examiner . Walsh believes that this is the worst trading environment that the industry has ever seen. "We have already seen 30 or so airlines go bust this year and it would be fair to expect a similar number of casualties worldwide over the next three to four months," he said "This is a difficult trading environment and some of the airlines that we have become used to will not survive," he warned. Airline mergers are never good for the traveling public. The bosses always do what's best for the airlines, and the public be damned. Travel is going to be even more of a nightmare than it already is. And it's going to cost passengers more money in the long run. The world i ... Source: www.flyertalk.com --- 32 days ago
From February 2009, Lufthansa will offer passengers a greatly expanded service from Milan Malpensa to attractive European destinations. "Milan Malpensas catchment area extends is one of the key economic regions in Europe. Moreover, by expanding our services, we will create about 150 new jobs in Milan." Next year, Lufthansa will base six Airbus A319s in Italy. The A319s will be operated by Lufthansas Italian subsidiary Air Dolomiti. In January I booked first class award travel, through UAL, on LH from IAD to CAI via FRA on 11/14. The return Flights were from DXBi (LH 639) on 12/4 arriving in MUC at 12:25PM with an overnight stay in Munich. On December 5 we were scheduled on LH 414 departing MUC arriving IAD at 1PM. Based on this itinerary, we booked a non-refundable hotel room and were looking forward to our stopover in Munich. FL 414 hac been canceled LH booked us on FL631 leaving DBX at 2:20 AM arriving in FRA at 6:10 am and laying over in FRA until 1PM and arriving IAD at 3:50 PM. Needless to say I was upset at this routing. I first called LH and was told I had to deal with UAL. I explained to the folks at UAL that I thought I should not have been rerouted from MUC, but instead should have been put on one of several possible Flights from MUC to FRA on the morning of 12/5 to connect to the newly booked FRA-IAD flight. They were sympathetic and a supervisor purportedly called Lufthansa and was told that Lufthansa refused to make the requested change. I then wrote an e-mail to Lufthansa and politely explained the situation and requested that the original Dubai-Munich booking be reinstated and that we be booked on LH965 or 967 to connect to the FRA-IAD flight. I received a reply which stated that only UAL could amend or cancel my Flights. Thus LH says only UAL can change the reservation and UAL says LH wont allow a change. Am I justified in believing that our orig ... Source: www.baltimoresun.com --- 65 days ago

I am purchasing 2 Coach tickets ORD to MUC Return DUS to ORD. I am taking the 855pm Lufthansa flight there and the 1130am return flight. Both Flights are on LH. United as the same exact price as LH. I want to earn miles w/ United Plus and will be using the United Platinum Visa (double miles on dollars spent on United and Star Allinace with Card.) What are if any the advantages of booking with UA or Lufthansa over the other? Are the miles I earn for the Flights the same. On LH website I am confused as it says the flight would get 4235 miles, but I thought it would bedouble that. Does LH only give 50% on transatlantic Flights? Also If I book with United I am not able to choose my seats, and suppose I'd have to call LH to reserve them, is this correct? I have no status with either airline. Any advice or info that might help or any experience for those who have taken this flight. Its a Thursday night flight there and Monday flight back. Thanks ...
