By Zachary A. Goldfarb The presidential campaign veered Sunday into a discussion about the escalating conflict between Georgia and Russia, with a supporter of Sen. Barack Obama suggesting that Sen. John McCain's criticism of Russia stems from his campaign's connections to Georgian political leadership. "His campaign is run by lobbyists that represent Georgia and other countries," New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson (D) said on ABC's "This Week," a clear reference to Randy Scheunemann, McCain's foreign policy adviser, who has been a registered lobbyist in Washington for the Tbilisi government. That drew a sharp response from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), reported to be under consideration as a McCain running mate. He said it was wrong for the Obama campaign to focus on any ties between members of the McCain campaign and the Georgian government. Georgia is "an example of Senator McCain's push to spread democracy in that part of the ... Source: latimesblogs.latimes.com --- 4 days ago
ST. PAUL -- Republican officials will resume their regular convention programming tonight, combining elements of Monday's canceled program with today's program, as Hurricane Gustav blew away into a Category 0 storm. President Bush, who was originally slated to speak in person Monday night, will now address the convention via video from the White House this evening. Other scheduled speakers this evening are former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson, who will discuss presumptive Republican nominee John McCain’s biography (and a good friend). And Independent Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who's expected to be the highlight of this evening’s program, reintroducing the presumptive Republican nominee as one of the world's greatest mavericks. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who was supposed to be the entire convention's keynote speaker tonight, won't be. He's expected to show up on the schedule later in the week. “It’s going to be a lot about John McCain, who is John McCain,” Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan said. McCain campaign official Rick Davis said they made the decision to move forward after consulting with FEMA and studying statements by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Officials said they were still rearranging the program and that it was now unclear which night Republican vice presidential nominee Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would speak. For now, Davis said, she's penciled in for ... Source: www.nypost.com --- 17 days ago

Mykia Battle plays with her dog Sunday, Aug. 30, 2008 at a Pensacola, Fla. rest stop. Her family left Alabama rather than face Hurricane Gustav. Associated Press After what some people are calling the most compelling political convention in decades -- and others deriding as the "coronation" of Senator Barack Obama as the Democratic nominee for President -- the Republicans could be canceling their convention. At least that's a possible scenario according to an advanced news report of a Fox News interview with Senator John McCain. The website Politico.com is running a story that quotes an interview with Senator McCain which taped on Saturday to air on Sunday. The Politico article reads: "It just wouldn't be appropriate to have a festive occasion while a near-tragedy or a terrible challenge is presented in the form of a natural disaster," McCain told Chris Wallace of "Fox News Sunday" in an interview taped for Sunday. "So we're monitoring it from day to day and I'm saying a few prayers, too." According to that and other news reports, President Bush and Louisiana's Governor Bobby Jindal, both scheduled speakers at the convention, may pull out: Jindal for the obvious reason that he is governor of the state about to be hit by the storm; President Bush because, as the Politico article puts it: The government's botched response to Hurricane Katrina still stings, and Republicans said they doubt the president would come to a political bash i ... You can feel the anticipation starting to build for more than Michael Phelps" bid for more history this weekend. We"ll know within days who Barack Obama will select as his vice presidential running mate and everyone"s reading the tea leaves for the slightest clue. CBS News reports that Obama has scheduled an event in Richmond next Thursday, raising eyebrows about Virginia Governor Tim Kaine. Several of the oft-mentioned contenders will appear on the Sunday shows this week. Indiana Senator Evan Bayh and Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty will appear on CBS" "Face the Nation" and Kaine, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge will also pop up on TV Sunday morning. With the Sunday Shows a crucial part of the political dialogue, such appearances are rightly seen as audition opportunities for these pols. But there"s a lot more to the guessing games than that. Trial balloons, real or imagined, are floated and popped almost daily. When John McCain hinted that his somewhat pro-abortion rights position wouldn"t disqualify Ridge from a spot on the ticket, the reaction from social conservatives was swift and angry. These trial balloons can be helpful to the campaigns as a way to judge the kinds of reactions certain candidates might generate, particularly among the kinds of key constituencies who watch the process closely. Some of them may be legitimate, others a little more spe ... Source: www.realclearpolitics.com --- 21 days ago
It is rare that a Senate candidate merits the attention of the First Lady of the United States. Then again, it is rare this year that a Republican Senate candidate is actually competitive against a Democratic incumbent. So Laura Bush's stop in Lafayette, Louisiana yesterday, on behalf of State Treasurer John Kennedy, served to underscore just how critical the GOP sees the state as a factor in their efforts to blunt what is expected to be a banner year for Democrats. In fact, most Republicans who follow the Senate landscape admit that Kennedy, who faces two-term Senator Mary Landrieu, is the party's only hope of winning back a seat this year. ... MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota -- Good Tuesday morning. Why do they call Chicago the Windy City when we almost lost our hats (If we were wearing hats) in Minneapolis yesterday? Nicknames should be subject to re-evaluation. Here's what St. Paul and Washington are watching today: -- Republicans, and everyone else, breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as Hurricane Gustav came ashore lacking the sort of power many had feared and forecast. New Orleans, it appears, was hit with a nasty wind and rainstorm, not the "storm of the century," as Mayor Ray Nagin had predicted. That's because the wind came from the south side of the city, not the northern border facing Lake Pontchartrain as happened with Hurricane Katrina about three years ago. -- That the city is just fine, and that Gustav did not inflict the kind of damage on the rest of Louisiana that many feared, means the show must go on, and today the Republican convention in St. Paul will resume. Major speakers will include former Senator and one-time candidate Fred Thompson and independent Senator Joe Lieberman, as well as President Bush, who will speak by satellite. Yesterday's cancellation was only temporary, and by getting President Bush and Vice President Cheney off the stage, perhaps the hurricane scare was just what McCain needed. -- Speaking of which, delegates and guests were treated to muted speeches yesterday, focused more on hurricane victims and their families than on politics and policy. ... In advance of the 1994 general election, Republican Ron Lewis' win in a Kentucky special election gave the first hint of an impending GOP landslide. Fourteen years later, as Lewis steps down from Congress, a poll in Kentucky's Second District could be a good sign for Democrats, as State Senator David Boswell sports a lead over his Republican rival. The survey, conducted for Boswell's campaign by Garin-Hart-Yang, surveyed 403 likely voters between 8/23-25 for a margin of error of +/- 4.9%. Boswell and State Senator Brett Guthrie, the GOP nominee, were tested among a sample made up of 58% Democrats, 35% Republicans and 7% independents. The actual voter registration in the district is 58% Democrats and 36% Republicans, the polling memo notes. General Election Matchup Boswell.................41 Guthrie..................33 Generic Dem.........39 Generic GOPer.....35 Running as a conservative Democrat, Boswell has taken positions that look like those adopted by others in his party who have found success in the South this year. Reps. Travis Childers of Mississippi and Don Cazayoux of Louisiana both won special elections running as a pro-life and pro-gun Democrats. Despite the overwhelmingly Democratic registration, President Bush carried the Second District with 65% of the vote in 2004. Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu, who faces a tough re-election, has had her name removed from a fundraiser announcement for presidential candidate Barack Obama. Landrieu will attend the "Lipstick, Laughter and Libations" fundraiser for Barack Obama at a Washington restaurant next week, but she won't help host it. Landrieu's campaign said her name only was added to the online announcement of the fundraiser on Obama's Web site as a mistake. Her Republican opponent's campaign said she is trying to keep her distance from her party's presidential candidate and removed her name after they pointed it out. "She was never scheduled to host," said Landrieu campaign spokesman Scott Schneider. "She is attending, and there was some sort of clerical error in which somebody said she was hosting, but she is not." A spokesman for Landrieu's GOP opponent, John Kennedy, said he believes the Senator removed her name because she doesn't want to be too closely connected with Obama in Louisiana, which has trended Republican in federal elections. ...
