Decía el otro día que las únicas películas que pueden tratar sobre artistas y estar dirigidas a todos los públicos, incluso a los no seguidores, son las biografías filmadas. Pero, claro, para eso el film tiene que ir a lo obvio y lo comercial, como se demuestra con el título que llevará la película sobre la vida de Louis Armstrong , ‘What a Wonderful World’ , una canción muy bonita, pero tan utilizada que ya cansa. Entiendo que no es sólo un título con gancho, también la posibilidad de darle mucha ironía; sé que cualquier montaje de imágenes hecho con este tema de fondo arranca la lagrimita y, por supuesto, comprendo que hay que esperar a ver que se hace para saber si realmente se caerá o no en el tópico. El actor Forest Whitaker , quien ya ha toreado en estas plazas pues interpretó a Charlie Parker en ‘Bird’ de Clint Eastwood; no sólo dará vida a Armstrong , sino que también dirigirá la película. Just a few weeks ago , there was word that Charles S. Dutton was working on a Louis Armstrong miniseries with Quincy Jones, and John Sayles -- one heck of a dream team. But of course, this is Hollywood and one project can never be enough -- especially when we're talking about a recognizable icon. Now word comes that we're getting a feature film as well. Variety reports that Forest Whitaker is not only going to star as Louis in an upcoming biopic called What a Wonderful World , but also direct it. (This is the second music icon Whitaker is becoming -- he already played Charlie Parker in Bird .) Now, while Sayles is the powerhouse behind Dutton's project, Ron Bass ( Rain Man ) will be writing this feature with the help of Armstrong's estate. They're allowing the Oscar-winning scribe exclusive access to personal accounts, letters, and other archive material, which should give the film some interesting depth as it starts "during the musician's impoverished early years in New Orleans and [will] primarily chronicle his career as a trumpet virtuoso and improvisational singer." The dueling projects certainly won't completely overlap since the miniseries is taking on Armstrong's whole life, and the feature will add exclusive insight into the man. Louis Armstrong's music never fails to make me happy; I can't explain why, exactly. So, I'm interested in a big film about his life. I was recently reading, however, a rundown of all the things wrong with making biopics (they are "more about the lead actor/actress than about the subject," etc.), and there are some valid points there.
