Filed under: Cubs , NL Central Quietly, without fuss or complaint, Kosuke Fukudome has become something of a liability in the Cubs' lineup. Where once he drew walk after walk, liner after liner -- where once he hit three home runs in the season opener, forever endearing himself to Cubs fans -- Fukudome is now struggling. In July, his .236/.306./.382 split was in stark contrast to his early-season performance, and his August (.125/.214/.167) hasn't gone any better. Though Fukudome has largely escaped fan fury for his recent failures, they haven't gone unnoticed by Lou Piniella . Piniella needs to see more from Fukudome, or else : The Cubs manager said if Fukudome didn't start hitting soon, he'd have to look at "other options" in right. "I just look at trying to put out lineups that produce runs, and we've got a couple guys that are swinging the bats, including Reed Johnson, that are not playing," Piniella said. "Sooner or later, I've got to give them opportunities." By far, the problem with Fukudome isn't so much that he's not hitting -- it's that he's not walking anymore, either. The overriding value to Fukudome was supposed to be his J.D. Drew -like on-base ability, the kind of batters' eye that keeps him productive even during slumps. That hasn't happened. Instead, Fukudome's been bad in almost all facets except his right field defense, which remains strong. Still, he's been bad, and needs to get better. That this isn't a big d ...

Filed under: Cubs , NL Central With the Cubs cruising to their second win over the Brewers last night, allowing them to open up a three-game lead on the Brew Crew, you'd think Lou Piniella would be awfully happy. The last two games of the series may swing things, but as of right now there's no question who the dominant team in the NL is. Lou, however, is not happy with a mere three game lead. He pretty strongly hints today that he'd like some upgrades at the trade deadline : On Tuesday afternoon -- less than 48 hours before the trade deadline -- Piniella was playing it as close to the vest as he ever has. Asked if he needed anything before the stretch run, he wasn't biting. ''You can talk to Jim Hendry about that,'' Piniella said of the Cubs' general manager, who was back in Chicago. ''That's his area.'' [...] ''I've said I like my team,'' he said. ''If you can improve it, why not?'' What can the Cubs add at this point? There's no where for Manny Ramirez to play. I guess they could use a left-handed reliever, but who can't at the trade deadline? And if the choice is really John Grabow or no one, I can tell Lou as a Pirate fan that they're probably better off with no one. The Cubs are the most complete team in the National League right now and unless someone loses their mind in the next 26 hours or so, they're going to be when the deadline comes tomorrow. Breathe easy, Lou.   Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...

Rather than ponder the injustice that has a mere two players from the MLB-best Tampa Rays named to the American League All-Star team, let’s instead consider who deserves praise for the Rays’ startling transformation.
