That didn’t take long. Disgraced boy-band promoter Lou Pearlman has been working as an informant for police while in jail, handing over information he’s learned about a 19-year-old man accused of killing an off-duty Florida police officer during a botched robbery. Apparently, the man at the center of the case recognized Pearlman from “Making the Band” as they were leaving the shower area. Read the full story here. ...

Who knew that robbing the Backstreet Boys could have so many financial rewards, on top of the emotional satisfaction? Lou Pearlman, the sleazebag boy band promoter who managed Backstreet and N'Sync, among others, has been ordered to repay $300 million to hundreds of people that he swindled in a Ponzi scheme that played out for decades. But uh, according to our forensic accounting, he might have a little trouble making full restitution: It will be difficult for Pearlman to repay all the money while he is behind bars [serving his 25-year prison sentence for fraud]. Pearlman made millions in the record industry in the 1990s, but investigators have found that money and more seemingly gone with the collapse of his Ponzi scheme. He's been allowed to manage - at arm's length - the few remaining music acts he still has. He could also offer wages from whatever job he gets in federal prison, ranging from 12 cents an hour to $1.15 an hour for top-scale factory work. Once he works his way up to that top-scale job he can erase the debt in just over 130,000 years. MATH. [ AP ] ...

Former music mogul Lou Pearlman was moved out of the Orange County Jail early Tuesday so he could begin serving his 25-year federal prison term, jail officials said. Pearlman was picked up at 6:19 a.m. by U.S. marshals and taken to an unknown federal prison facility, Orange County spokesman Allen Moore said. Marshals said they will not comment about Pearlman's movements for security reasons. U.S. Bureau of Prisons officials said they will not release Pearlman's location until he is received at a federal prison facility. Pearlman, founder of the bands Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync, pleaded guilty to conspiracy, fraud and money-laundering charges and agreed to assist prosecutors, FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents on the investigation. He was sentenced in June to 25 years in prison. ...

Former boy-band svengali/current guest of the federal pokey Lou Pearlman has been ordered to repay some $300 million to the investors who he bilked over years of real-estate fraud and Ponzi-like scheming. How did Pearlman amass these ill-gotten gains? Glad you asked! "The FBI and FDIC determined Pearlman took $195 million from more than 1,000 people in an alleged savings program promising 6 percent to 10 percent returns, and $126.7 million in bogus loans from federally insured banks. Another $70 million was invested by people who thought they were buying shares in companies owned by Pearlman that mostly had no assets. About $95 million was returned to investors over the years, documents show." Well, you'd think that he'd at least be given some points for trying , there. Instead, he may have to pay back even more money! But Pearlman's restitution could go up. Sharpe delayed judgment on prosecutors' request to tack on $124 million in interest payments to victims, saying he wanted to see Pearlman return some of the principal first. "If they had not provided their money to Mr. Pearlman, they would have received interest or some return on their investment," Assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg argued in court. Pearlman's attorney, former public defender Fletcher Peacock, said adding interest would only dissuade Pearlman from repaying any of his debt. Peacock also said it was unfair because the money was never invested. "This is not ...

Chief assistant U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg is asking Judge Sharp to award $424.4-million in restitution, including interest owed as of the last statements victims received. This filing makes the argument that interest should be included in the restitution. Presumably Lou's lawyer will argue that interest should not be included. Here's the difference: For EISA investors it's $193.8-million with interest, $137.1-million without; for stock investors it's $103.9-million with interest, $33.4-million without. In addition, there's $126.7-million owed to banks (no breakdown given regarding interest). The judge is expected to make his decision at Wednesday's hearing. So far, of course, he has not been sympathetic to Pearlman's arguments. Here is the proposed order. Here are the restitution names and amounts: EISA investors, stock investors and banks ...

Normal 0 The Wellesley cross country team hosted Newton North — an interdivisional foe — for its first meet of the season on Sept. 9. More than Tuesday’s poor weather gave the Raiders a rocky start, as injuries and illness riddled Wellesley’s program and contributed to a pair of losses against the Tigers. “We know Newton North always has a huge program, but we match up with numbers and on both sides we were down a couple of kids,” Raiders coach Lou Pearlman said. With nearly 2,000 students, Newton North does rank among the largest schools in the Bay State Conference, the league of 12 teams in which Wellesley competes. But the Raiders also boast 64 members between the boys and girls team, which Pearlman noted to be a new high. “They [Newton North] have huge numbers, but I’d have to say that for a Division 3 program — numbers-wise — Wellesley is pretty close,” he said. Neither loss was a blowout, though. The Wellesley girls fell to Newton, 25-30, and the Raider boys lost, 19-37. Pearlman felt that the Raiders performed well, considering that athletes were down on both sides. For the girls team, he noted the absence of Wellesley’s Blake Dietrick, the top girl in 2007. Both captain Will Volkmann and Peter Krieg, among the best boys runners, also missed Tuesday’s meet because of injury and sickness. In fact, weather almost canceled the season-opener entirely. But early-afternoon downpours, mud and puddles couldn’t deter the Wellesley ...

With help from FBI agent Scott Skinner, the Times put together a really cool map showing Pearlman's 2007 route from Orlando to Orlando, traveling around the world. He may also have taken some trips that we left out, but here's the basic route of his adventure: Orlando to New York to Dublin to Frankfurt to Berlin to Frankfurt to Madrid to Panama City (Panama) to Madrid to Frankfurt to Singapore to Nusa Dua (Bali) to Hong Kong to Nusa Dua to Guam to Los Angeles to Oklahoma City to Orlando--circumnavigating the world. One of the fun things about doing this story was holding Lou's passport in my hands and looking over all the stamps. Here's a story that tells a little about his trip. ...
