Lotus Elise on the Road

The standard Lotus Elise S is an enthusiast's dream car. Supercharged power, light weight, and nimble handling make for a compelling toy -- one that happens to also pull down 27 mpg highway and over 20 mpg in combined daily driving. It's almost a perfect combination as is. How do you make even better? You turn it into a green showcase while not diminishing its core attributes in the least. At the London Motor Show later this month, Lotus will unveil the Eco Elise , a study that demonstrates how the little Lotus can be further improved upon, both in terms of performance and sustainability. Thanks to using more sustainable materials and processes in its construction, the Eco Elise boasts a smaller environmental footprint over its entire life cycle than its regular Elise siblings. Water-based paint adorns lightweight, hemp-based composite bodywork. Inside the cabin, "eco-wool" and sisal can be found in the seats and carpeting. Solar panels adorn the roof, supplying power to the car's accessory systems, and a shift light helps the driver pick the most efficient times to change gears. This all happens in a vehicle that's around 70 pounds lighter than a stock Elise. Power from its mid-mounted, supercharged four-cylinder engine is undiminished. This means that the "Eco" car should outperform the already excellent Elise S, and though Lotus hasn't announced any numbers, its fuel efficiency should also improve accordingly. No production plans h ...

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FullTests/articleId=126177 "South Grade Road and East Grade Road aren't the sort of evocative names you'd expect from the best driving roads to be found anywhere. But these smooth, flowing ribbons of asphalt, known locally in San Diego County as S6 and S7, are as good as anything we see on press junkets to Spain or Italy or Germany. No, really. Best of all, they're part of a nearby network of roads in the mountains above San Diego that make this region a weekend stomping ground for the car clubs, enthusiasts of high-strung Italian motorcycles (who have about six months to live, we figure) and the kind of drivers who can appreciate the supercharged 2008 Lotus Elise SC." Lotus has taken a different approach to 'green' car building with the announcement of its Eco Elise - featuring hemp-based bodywork and other renewable materials. Taking the position that too many 'green' cars concentrate solely on CO2 emissions at the tailpipe, Lotus has overhauled its entire manufacturing process to reduce energy and water usage, boost recycling, use locally-sourced, renewable and carbon-neutral materials, and provide dash instrumentation to encourage greener driving habits. It's an unique 'holistic' approach to environmentally friendly car building - and the stunning Eco Elise should make at least two sales when the news reaches Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong...    Lotus Eco Elise Concept Emphasizes Renewable MaterialsWhile Lotus's previous attempt at a green car - the Exige 265 - focused mostly on biofuels, their new Eco Elise concept, debuting at the London motor show, showcases the company's work with green materials. In an attempt to maximize the use of recyclable materials, engineers incorporated hemp, wool, and sisal throughout the Eco Elise. Not surprisingly, the car uses a considerable amount of woven hemp as interior trim, using the material not only on the center console and dashboard but on the seats as well.Perhaps more important is the use of recyclable materials on the car's exterior. A number of body panels on the Eco Elise are made of a hemp-based composite. Lotus claims the hemp fiber itself is quite strong and durable, but the material's limited development forced the use of polyester in the composite. Lotus does hope, however, to have a fully recyclable material developed in the near future. The Eco Elise sports other trick features, including water-based paint and roof-mounted solar panels tied to the car's charging system, but in typical Lotus tradition, engineers tried to strip as much weight from the car as possible. Custom lightweight wheels, along with the composite body panels, shave nearly 70 lbs from the 1895-lb curb weight of an Elise S. Although Lotus hasn't tweaked the 1.8-liter Toyota-sourced I-4, it hopes weight savings and efficient driving methods will ret ...
