Loopt has an appealing application that allows you to track your friends and allows them to track you on a graphic map. It's kind of like a GPS-sonar radar that I've just discovered on the iPhone 3G. But, is this application really more like an electronic leash? Will ... ...

Location-based mobile social networks, such as Loopt, GyPSii and Pelago, could be a $3.3 billion market by 2013. But history and current trends suggest these startups won't be standing on their own for some time. Loopt has already won deals with Sprint and Verizon, GyPSii is working with Samsung and Garmin, Google's acquired Jaiku, and Nokia bought Plazes. - It's always fun to noodle over on market expectations for red-hot technologies. But the media and analysts are too often guilty of trying to drag a horse behind a cart. For example, if I told you location-based mobile social networks would spawn a $3 billion-plus market within the next five years, ... ...

The location-based social networking service Loopt is trying to recover from a privacy fumble, as users accuse it of spewing text-message spam and disclosing user cell phone numbers and whereabouts without permission. The controversy is sure to be a forerunner of privacy battles to come, as GPS-enabled cell phones like the iPhone enable businesses to track -- and disclose -- where people are at any given moment. ...

When Apple ( NSDQ: AAPL ) announced plans to open up the iPhone platform to developers and make its many features available for third-party applications, location-based apps startup Loopt found an opening. With the new iPhone SDK, the social mapping and networking service saw an opportunity to harness the cell-tower triangulation features of the first iPhone and the GPS feature on the new iPhone 3G, all while reaching an audience that is very much in line with Loopt's typical user. In a brief interview on Monday, Loopt's co-founder and CEO Sam Altman talked about new areas of growth for the company, hiccups along the way and yep, you guessed it, impressive iPhone usage from Loopt users. "There are definitely new avenues and that's why we like our position," he said. The confluence of newer platforms in mobile and an opening up of the old have all benefited Loopt's opportunity. "Location is the defining element in mobile… In the past six or nine months, location services have really caught the public… It's gone beyond the early adopter phase" iPhone adoption and usage: Adoption tapered off briefly because of an "invite sort-of-fiasco" where multiple contacts in iPhone users' address books were being invited to use the service somewhat unknowingly. The feature, which gave the company problems almost immediately after the iPhone 3G was released, has been completely shut down for the time being. The company's working on a better solu ...

I don't exactly follow this, but here's what I understand from VentureBeat . Maybe a reader can help explain the flow of money... (1) There's a "cost" (I guess in money?) to get the GPS location from a phone's chip. Each time to you (a developer) does it, you "pay." (2) Loopt (one of these developers) struck a deal with Sirf and Qualcomm (they make GPS chips) for a flat fee to get the GPS data. (3) Thus, Loopt can offer its service to the carriers more cheaply. So says, VentureBeat: What does this mean? Nearly every phone with a GPS chip right now will be able to use the Loopt application for a much better deal. The carriers and handset makers still have to buy into this new plan, but you can be sure that is going to happen now that Loopt has this deal. That I read as: the carriers are more likely to carry the Loopt app since it "costs them less" via this deal. End users use Loopt for free, so this is really about putting Loopt on more carrier networks, so it's THE LBS app out there. The other motivation, says a source close to the action: a forthcoming ad app for Loopt. ...

Social-mapping and communication service Loopt announced its integration with the Facebook Connect platform to enable users to connect their Facebook identity, contacts and privacy settings to the Loopt network. According to Loopt, Facebook Connect integration enables users to share and discover recommendations for nearby businesses, add location awareness to their Facebook feeds (complete with alerts when their contacts are nearby) and connect with Facebook friends both on and offline. The Facebook-enhanced Loopt capabilities will debut later this summer via iPhone's App Store--from there, the features will gradually roll out on the BlackBerry platform and across feature phones from Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel and Boost Mobile. When we first checked in with social mapping software Loopt, it was exclusive for the Sprint network . It has since expanded, however, which is a necessity in this socially networked world. The latest carrier to get the service: MetroPCS . This puts them in a list with Boost Mobile , Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile for BlackBerry, and AT&T for the iPhone. For now, Loopt will only be available on a handful of MetroPCS phones. These include the Motorolas RAZR and ROKR, and the Samsungs MyShot and U520. Loopt plans to make the service available on more phones, of course. As for the cost: If you have the $50 calling plan, it’s free. For the $40 and $45 plans, it’s $4 per month. So, basically, if you want Loopt with the $45 plan, you’re better off just upgrading to the $50 plan.
