The Times reported on an interesting development today that's likely to garner a rather mixed response from commuters and fellow travellers. Glasgow is currently preparing its subway for the first British subterranean mobile phone network, a service which is provided by O2 and will allow people to finally use their mobiles on the Underground. The service starts up in December and will be the first time the UK has used such technology. ...

Expensive Tube upgrades could mean sacrifices elsewhereFITTINGLY for a city that earns its living from the brain-melting complexities of international finance, London is home to one of the most baroque public-infrastructure deals in the world. And like the financial products offered by the City—blamed for contributing to the current global financial crisis—the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contracts to upgrade the capital’s creaking Underground network now look like complicated, costly mistakes.Chris Bolt, the PPP Arbiter and philosopher-king, has the unenviable task of refereeing the contracts, judging the engineering firms’ performance and plans against those of a platonically ideal one and deciding who should pay for what. On September 9th he published his assessment of the cost of the work to be carried out on three Underground lines between 2010 and 2017. Transport for London (TfL), the official body that oversees the Tube, had hoped that the work could be done for GBP4.1 billion ($7.2 billion). Tube Lines, the consortium of firms carrying out the upgrades, thought it would cost GBP7.2 billion. Mr Bolt suggested a figure of GBP5.1 billion-GBP5.5 billion. ... ...

The famed "Roundel" -- symbol of the "Tube," London's famed Underground, the world's oldest subway system -- is one of the most recognized logos in the world, and it's celebrating its 100 birthday. In honor of the occasion the Transport for London has commissioned 100 artists to produce 100 "brand new works of art that are inspired by the Roundel as a contemporary symbol for a world class transport system." With the kind permission of the TfL, the Britannica Blog will highlight one of these new works of art daily, starting Monday, in honor of the occasion. ...

The London Underground has commissioned a lot of art in its time. But more than that, it is practically a work of art itself. Few of its users have any idea how it really goes. What we know of it is a beautiful fiction. Other cities give you the facts; in Paris, at any station, you can see a geographical map of Métro lines superimposed on a street plan. In London, the Tube left earthly reality behind long ago, to become a land of imagination. ...

Open House London is an annual event where private buildings and houses are opened up for the architecturally curious to explore. More than 700 different locations were available to tour this year. Sure, the traditional styles were represented, with names like Victorian, Bedfordshire and Elizabethan. But yawn! If you wanted to see some really edgy dwelling design, the real action was with the soon-to-be classic: recycled tube carriages. Village Underground is an office complex made up of four former London Underground Tube carriages that were lifted on top of a giant brick Victorian arch. The cars were gutted and re-fitted with clean looking modern office spaces, then completely covered in graffiti. It's all part of a social enterprise project, funded by the local government. The offices are now rented out to various members of the creative community as a place to work and socialize. London's Underground is a marvel, yet it relatively cramped spaces -- they don't call it the Tube for nothing -- means that temperatures can often rise down below even on a typically cool, damp British day. London Mayor Boris Johnson today unveiled a new Underground train model, which for the first time will come with air conditioning. The new trains are to debut on the Metropolitan line in 2010 and will get phased in on other lines up until 2015. "I can assure passengers who will use them that we hope, rather than arriving at their destinations drenched in perspiration, they will emerge cool as cucumbers and ready to enjoy all that the capital offers," Johnson tells the Associated Press . Why the Metropolitan line first, you might ask? The plan is to gradually replace many of the existing subway cars, starting with the city's oldest subway lines first.   Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Linking Blogs  |  Comments ...
