As the unfulfilled hope of summer gives way to the gloom of autumn, you know it's time to stop leaving the house in the evening and play more games. Or at least that's what publishers clearly think, holding all their best efforts back for the coming three months. On cue, the London Games Festival arrives, with such attractions as Videogames Live , where game theme music gets the classical treatment; the wholly self-explanatory Movie Comic Media Expo ; the Gamesindustry.biz Careers Fair that helps turn your hobby into a job; the Eurogamer Expo , giving the chiding uncles of British gaming their own show; and Who Wants To Be? which promises its audience the chance to decide in real time how to spend the £2,000 raised by ticket sales in what it describes as a "dangerously democratic gameshow". • London Games Festival, londongames Festival.com ; Who Wants To Be?, Nov 7, whowantstobe.co.uk Events Games guardian.co.uk © Guardian News and Media Limited 2008 | More Feeds | Terms of Use Related Stories Internet review: The Outbreak What we learned on the web this week Blog roll: blogs about adverts Game review: de Blob, Nintendo Wii Game review: WipEout HD, PlayStation 3 ... This concert began with a mystery. Richard Strauss sub-titled Metamorphosen (1945) – his great elegy over the destruction of German culture – as a "study for 23 solo strings"; plotting a path for each of its players through his intricate half-hour ebb and flow of texture. Yet here was the entire London Philharmonic strings, almost 70 players, assembling on the Royal Festival Hall stage. ... Source: www.independent.co.uk --- 4 days ago
Music-and-art-hybrid events in east London are increasingly common these days, but you would be hard-pressed to find something so plugged in and comprehensive as this two-day Festival featuring more than 100 bands and 50 visual artists spread across 20 venues about Shoreditch. On display were industry buzz-bands such as Twisted Wheel and Flashguns along with more established talent that equally lived up to expectations. ... Source: www.independent.co.uk --- 3 days ago
The London Film Festival, which runs from 15 to 30 October, is framed by celebration and commiseration this year. The 2008 event marks the 75th anniversary of the BFI, which organises the Festival, but it's also the year in which its greatest champion, Anthony Minghella, passed away. ...

Among the greatest and best-loved operas, very few depend on behaviour unimaginable today. Rape, revolution, murder, suicide, infidelity, exile, corruption, poverty, sickness and greed still make the headlines, and a good production of a good opera can make a 400-year-old drama seem to happen in the now. Altogether trickier are those operas in which nothing of particular consequence happens, in which characters of apparent spunkiness run their lives as parlour games, and in which the score is second-rate. Such an opera is The Secret Marriage: Domenico Cimarosa's Beaumarchais-lite comedy about love between the classes. ... Source: www.moreover.com --- 6 days ago

One of the highlights of the London Design Festival wasn't a big name or flashy product, it was a low-key installation from a young design graduate placed in a corner of Tent London.
