As the unfulfilled hope of summer gives way to the gloom of autumn, you know it's time to stop leaving the house in the evening and play more games. Or at least that's what publishers clearly think, holding all their best efforts back for the coming three months. On cue, the London Games Festival arrives, with such attractions as Videogames Live , where game theme music gets the classical treatment; the wholly self-explanatory Movie Comic Media Expo ; the Gamesindustry.biz Careers Fair that helps turn your hobby into a job; the Eurogamer Expo , giving the chiding uncles of British gaming their own show; and Who Wants To Be? which promises its audience the chance to decide in real time how to spend the £2,000 raised by ticket sales in what it describes as a "dangerously democratic gameshow". • London Games Festival, londongames Festival.com ; Who Wants To Be?, Nov 7, whowantstobe.co.uk Events Games guardian.co.uk © Guardian News and Media Limited 2008 | More Feeds | Terms of Use Related Stories Internet review: The Outbreak What we learned on the web this week Blog roll: blogs about adverts Game review: de Blob, Nintendo Wii Game review: WipEout HD, PlayStation 3 ...

This concert began with a mystery. Richard Strauss sub-titled Metamorphosen (1945) – his great elegy over the destruction of German culture – as a "study for 23 solo strings"; plotting a path for each of its players through his intricate half-hour ebb and flow of texture. Yet here was the entire London Philharmonic strings, almost 70 players, assembling on the Royal Festival Hall stage. ...

Music-and-art-hybrid events in east London are increasingly common these days, but you would be hard-pressed to find something so plugged in and comprehensive as this two-day Festival featuring more than 100 bands and 50 visual artists spread across 20 venues about Shoreditch. On display were industry buzz-bands such as Twisted Wheel and Flashguns along with more established talent that equally lived up to expectations. ...

The London Film Festival, which runs from 15 to 30 October, is framed by celebration and commiseration this year. The 2008 event marks the 75th anniversary of the BFI, which organises the Festival, but it's also the year in which its greatest champion, Anthony Minghella, passed away. ...

Now that the London Design Festival has closed and we feel like we served our purpose by reporting on all the big news coming out of the event, or at least pointing you in the right direction, now we feel like it is our duty to point you in the direction of those who had boots on the ground, walking among all the design-y things and turtlenecked patrons. For our money, it doesn't get much better than our friends over at Core77 , whose Festival coverage was particularly strong this year , offering up dozens upon dozens of posts, as well as a whole slew of video goodness, many with the designers talking about their work directly, or just showing off how dang cool some of this stuff was, including Christopher Pearson 's Animated Stone Carving . So head over, tell 'em UnBeige sent you, and get to pretending you were fortunate enough to attend in person (we recommend eating some blood pudding, just so your playing pretend feels more authentic). Among the greatest and best-loved operas, very few depend on behaviour unimaginable today. Rape, revolution, murder, suicide, infidelity, exile, corruption, poverty, sickness and greed still make the headlines, and a good production of a good opera can make a 400-year-old drama seem to happen in the now. Altogether trickier are those operas in which nothing of particular consequence happens, in which characters of apparent spunkiness run their lives as parlour games, and in which the score is second-rate. Such an opera is The Secret Marriage: Domenico Cimarosa's Beaumarchais-lite comedy about love between the classes. ...

One of the highlights of the London Design Festival wasn't a big name or flashy product, it was a low-key installation from a young design graduate placed in a corner of Tent London. Easy to miss perhaps, but once seen it had people transfixed by its graphic beauty. Debbie Smyth was selected as one of the most promising graduates of 2008 for the Dezeen... ...

Texture was an important element of many of the lighting designs featured in the Lighten Up exhibit. Re-silicone 's Lagoon, a thick, chunky snake of ambient lighting was a good example of this. Vamped used colourful, glossy plastic off-cuts for Hula and the Higher Market Studio invested in cast-off jumper sleeves. Hasta la Pasta by Charlie Davidson Studio was the starchiest lighting on site, and Swarth by Re:think Things was a mass of aluminium shavings. Beryl and Friends by Wemake was a series of discarded lamps shrink-wrapped into new life. Also after the jump are designs by Alanna Cochrane and Julia Lohmann . + redesigndesign.org ...

From Now to Eternity is an exhibition curated by arts consultancy Arts Co that opened at the Biscuit Building during the London Design Festival. The exhibition focuses on plastic, a much-used material that will likely be with us until the very end. Who knew that it would have such lasting power when it was invented over one hundred years ago? And along with that permanency comes a huge recycling challenge. Ten leading designers and studios celebrate this substance through their work and here we show a few examples. Stuart Haygarth 's Millennium Chandelier is made up of over 1000 exploded party poppers. The Shaker Shadow by Tomoko Azumi is an austere installation made of recycled extruded polystyrene and PEP webbing, not wood. Forever Old and Dressed to Impress by Rolf Sachs include a variety of materials, including coconut hair and a cigarette. The Soft Hercules by FAT is a flexible polyurethane foam stool, and Raw Edges created a series of objects based on plastic toys, called Plastic Nostalgic. + arts-co.com ...

The New Designers SELECTION was an exhibition of work by 50 young designers who were selected from the New Designers event in July. Held at the Village Underground in Shoreditch, this show featured a variety of furniture, jewellery, accessories and lighting. There were colourful (and cheeky) ceramics from Michelle Wood, a salute to the monarchy by Faye Power , and intricate work from Rebecca Smye-Rumsby . Elena Fleury-Rojo 's glass pieces were a combination of frost and shine, and Rachel Postlethwaite 's layered cubbies provided unusual modular shelving options. More after the jump, along with work from Lizzie Thomas , Katie Merrick and Mira Horn . + newdesignersonline.co.uk ...

The London Design Festival saw the launch of the first Rabih Hage/Piet Hein Eek pop-up store in a space large enough to highlight a wide variety of Eek's work. The temporary shop will be open through October 31 and features Eek's new 99% cabinets, storage that makes use of 99.13% of a whole steel sheet (the waste is a result of the holes for the fasteners). There was a nice selection of signature Waste Scrapwood pieces, all a glorious, yet soothing, patchwork of colours. The Plywood Chandelier and Plissélamp were good examples of Piet Hein Eek lighting, and the ceramics range caught the sun on the tables. The Crisis Cushion Sofa beckoned softly from a corner, and the Plywood dining set showed up well in the space. + pietheineek.nl ...
