TIGNISH, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND--(Marketwire - Aug. 15, 2008) - Families from the Tignish community will take part in a ceremony to dedicate commemorative plaques and newly planted trees with Government of Canada support. The Legion will also dedicate one tree to all Local Veterans. Completing one’s obligations as an active duty member of the military is a difficult enough task. Moving on to the next chapter of life when one’s service contract comes to an end can sometimes be even tougher. According to Dan Farrell and Rocco DiSalle, two South Shore natives who’ve recently fulfilled their military requirements after a few years of service, the adjustment back into ‘civilian’ life has been challenging. “You kind of feel like you lose your family when you get out,” said DiSalle, 28, a Brockton native who completed a five-year stint in the Navy in February. “There’s not a lot of people who know how hard it is to re-acclimate when you come home.” Upon being honorably discharged from the Army after two years and five months last December, Farrell, 26, said he didn’t really know what to do with his life. In the military, people are put in positions to succeed, he said, and prior to leaving he was told there would be lots of opportunities available to him. “A lot of Veterans are misunderstood,” said Farrell, who graduated from Marshfield High School in 2001. “[People] think we’re a lot of brainless killing machines. A lot of civilians just don’t understand what Veterans go through.” Soon after getting out of the Army, Farrell said he was staying in a hotel, down on his luck and “self medicating.” Eventually, he learned about the Plymouth based Nathan Hale Foundation, and he gave the organization a call. That very da ...

Hundreds of patriotic Valleyites flocked to the South Waverly Fairgrounds Saturday afternoon for food, fun, and prizes at the Fourth Annual Valley Veterans Fundraiser. The party was a collaborative effort between several Local Veterans’ organizations: Athens American Legion Post No. 246, Sayre American Legion Post No. 283, Sayre VFW Post No. 1536, Elmira Vietnam Veterans of America Post No. 803, Elmira VFW Post No. 901, Waverly American Legion Post No. 492, Waverly VFW Post No. 8104, and Towanda American Legion Post No. 42. For $50 partygoers got unlimited food and beer for two, an afternoon of music courtesy of Local band The Spexxx, and a chance to win a grand prize of nearly $5,000. Waverly American Legion Commander Bob Owen explained that he helped to organize this fundraiser in its inaugural year. “We started this thing four years ago as a way to get all the Local clubs together on something instead of working against each other,” he said. Since then the party has grown every year, with over 600 tickets sold for 2008. “This is the biggest crowd we’ve had yet,” said Owen. Prior to the party the Waverly VFW made a donation to the South Waverly Volunteer Fire Department. Owen explained that the VFW ran a grill and concession stand at this year’s South Waverly Community Carnival as a VFW fundraiser and donated $800 to the fire department as a means of saying “thank you” for being allowed to participate. “It is with great honor and pride that the Swampscott Fire Fighters of IAFF Local 1459 donate heavy duty shredders to both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and to the Senior Center,” said William R,. Hyde Jr., president of Swampscott Fire Fighters, IAFF, in making the presentations. “We were thinking that if any seniors or Veterans needed to shred personal paperwork to help protect their identities, that this would be a great way to help out,” Hyde said. “We would not have been able to do most of the things we did last year and will continue to do this year without the generosity and good will shown during our fundraiser both last year, and the one that just finished up a few weeks ago,” he added. “The community and the Local businesses that took out ads and made donations to the Emergency Medical Guide that we published last year, making it possible for the Swampscott Fire Fighters Local 1459 to contribute to many things that we were never able to do in the past,” he said. “This is just one of the things that we have been able to do to be a bit more progressive and give back to a community that supports its Local firefighters and the job we are willing to do for them,” “We thank the community for its support.” ...

Related Articles Timeliness Across the Continuum of Care in Veterans with Lung Cancer. J Thorac Oncol. 2008 Sep;3(9):951-957 Authors: Powell AA, Schultz EM, Ordin DL, Enderle MA, Graham BA, Partin MR, Gould MK INTRODUCTION:: By providing timely care at all steps along the continuum of lung cancer care, providers may be able to limit disease progression before treatment and possibly improve clinical outcomes. This study examines the timeliness of key events in the process of care between initial radiograph and first treatment. METHODS:: Dates of key events were extracted from the medical records of 2463 Veterans receiving lung cancer care at 133 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities. After reviewing their site's abstraction results, facility leaders completed a survey on their perceptions of their Local processes of lung cancer care. RESULTS:: Median time from first radiography to first treatment was 71 days. The longest intermediate time interval examined was between first treatment referral and first treatment (median = 12 days). Time from first to last diagnostic test was most variable (interquartile range = 0-27 days). We found a significant trend indicating that the time interval from first radiograph to treatment was shorter for patients with more advanced disease. This effect was also significant within six of the seven intermediate time intervals we examined. Survey responses indicated that the chart review process stim ...

Local Veterans and their families now have another way to get access to information about benefits and services. Lincoln Veterans’ Services Officer (VSO) Priscilla Leach recently launched the Veterans’ Services Web page: www.lincolntown.org/depts/Veterans.htm . Hosted on the town Web site, the Veterans’ Services page includes a mission statement and contact information for Lincoln’s VSO, as well as links to other Web sites of interest to Veterans. “I was getting all this information, but I had no way to share it,” said Leach. “There are lots of benefits out there for Veterans that people just don’t know about. Hopefully, this will be a way that I can get more information about to people.” Leach, a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, said she herself was not aware that she was entitled to a certain benefit until she started received literature as the town’s VSO. Every city and town in Massachusetts has a VSO to advocate and offer support for Local Veterans and their dependents, providing information about state and federal military benefits. In larger communities, the VSO is a full-time, paid position, but in smaller towns like Lincoln, it is a volunteer job. Leach, who teaches eighth-grade science at Wellesley Middle School, volunteered for the position last fall, taking over for John Caswell, who had served in the role for seven years. “I thought, ‘What could be more worthwhile than doing something to help Veterans, especia ...

Normal 0 The first of the three questions on the November ballot will ask voters if they want to eliminate the 5.3 percent income tax. If that initiative passes, it could be costly, say area town officials. The ballot question would eliminate 40 percent of state tax revenue and almost $13 billion in revenues to the state,” said Geoff Beckwith, executive director at the Massachusetts Municipal Association, a non-profit, non-partisan association that provides advocacy, research and other services to cities and town. “It could not be implemented without widespread devastation of state budget accounts and would clearly have a giant negative impact on Local aid - schools, municipal aid, aid for maintenance of roads, and many other important areas,” he said.  “The total amount of Local aid provided by the state each year is $7 billion, that includes school building assistance, Chapter 70 education aid, general Local aid, reimbursement for services for Veterans, reimbursement for programs that the state law requires and it goes on and on,” Beckwith added. “Cities and towns base their budget expectations that the $7 billion of Local aid will be there. If the state budget is cut by 40 percent and Local aid takes a similar cut, that would eliminate $2.8 billion in funding for cities and towns. Clearly the reliance on property tax would skyrocket and deepen harmful cuts to important Local services from schools to police and libraries to roadways. ...
