Local business owner Wayne Fischer said attending the visitation for Rockford Marine Cpl. Adam McKiski was a profoundly sad experience, and that his heart goes out to the fallen Soldier’s friends and family. Fischer said he’s a good friend of Adam McKiski’s father, Hal McKiski, a Rockford developer who has worked extensively in the Stephenson County area. Hal McKiski has served as developer on a variety of major area projects, such as the Windhaven Acres subdivision in Pearl City and Countryside Estates in Freeport, Fischer said. “It’s a tragedy,” said Fischer, who co-owns Fischer Excavating Ready Mix & Stone in Freeport with his brother, Joe. “Hal has always been a good friend and he’s taking this real hard.” Adam McKiski, 21, of Rockford died on Aug. 7, 2008, in a military vehicle accident outside Fallujah, Iraq, according to the Rockford Register Star. His visitation was held on Aug. 15, 2008, and Aug. 16, 2008, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Rockford. Adam was a three-year Marine on his second tour of duty in Iraq at the time of his death. His primary duty in the Marines was as a towed artillery systems technician until he volunteered for recovery missions in Iraq as a gunner. Wayne Fischer said he met Hal McKiski through his excavating business. He describes Hal as a friendly, generous person who is well-known in the area. “He’s the type of guy who would give you the shirt off his back,” Fischer said. Fischer said when h ...

Spc. Andrew Scardina is enjoying life back in the United States now with his family, including his newborn daughter, after 18 months of service in Iraq. A self-described “Army brat,” Scardina — who was originally born in Ohio — spent much of his youth living between South Carolina, Wisconsin, Texas and Massachusetts while his parents served the country. He now is settled in Ulster with his wife Michelle and their two children, and works as an assistant head cook in Guthrie’s dietary department. Despite the sometimes difficulty of constantly moving, Scardina said that both he and his brother were so inspired from their parents’ example they both decided to join the Army. During his recent trip overseas, Scardina’s Army Reserves unit were assigned as supervisors for food service contractors and sub-contractors throughout Iraq, while also acting as liaisons for civilian and foreign food service contractors. “The mission kind of changed throughout the year because we needed people for tower guard, escort duties, and things like that — things that were essential, that had to be done,” said Scardina, who soon found himself sitting in one of the base’s guard towers with a gun, while avoiding daily bombings and consistent fire. “The base itself, three or four times-a-day, was constantly bombed with mortar rounds,” Scardina explained. “There were bunkers set up all over the place, so as soon as you heard the alarm you dive into the bunker and c ...
