Until last month, Georgetown’s Mark Erlandson and Jamaica Plains’ Gabe Cohen were complete strangers. Today, the two men have formed an unlikely partnership, and together are bringing softball to the Residents of rural El Salvador. “About a month ago, I was searching on Craigslist.com for used softball equipment,” Erlandson said. “I discovered Gabe’s ad that said he was looking for anyone to donate softball equipment for the women in his village in El Salvador. It was something that just struck home.” Cohen is a 25-year old member of the Peace Corps, serving as a rural health volunteer, who was home for vacation. The two decided to work together to gather up used softball equipment for the women in his village to use during their Local games. Cohen told Erlandson that the women play softball after spending the majority of their day in the kitchen. The women were forced to share one glove, which made catching the softball not only a difficult task, but a painful one as well. After their discussion, Erlandson began reaching out to the Georgetown community to help gather up old equipment. “I let everyone in our Georgetown softball community know about the idea,” said Erlandson. Erlandson decided to involve his daughter Sarah and her best friend, Tori Newbury, members of the varsity softball team. They helped collect the equipment and get it ready for Cohen to bring down to El Salvador. “My mom told me that the women from El Salvador ...

The day after winds knocked down trees or tree limbs in the town and village, Residents and public works crews were at work on the cleanup. Village Director of Public Works Bill Whitfield said the village faired pretty well despite the winds late Sunday night. He said the first call reporting problems came around 9:34 p.m. Sunday. “We had, all in all, about seven locations where tree limbs or trees themselves came down. We only had one situation on West State Street where a tree limb was hung up,” Whitfield said Monday morning. “A limb split off from the main trunk and it’s hung up on an adjacent tree, but it’s threatening the primary power line at 220 West State.” Whitfield said crews cut the power for about 90 minutes to try to deal with the tree limb, but decided to tie it to the tree instead. “The controlled power outage was right around midnight,” Whitfield said Monday. “It affected all of West State from the intersection with Brooklyn up to Highland; about half of Pleasant Street from State, about half of Nelson Street from State; the top part of Early Street; a small section of North Highland between State and Early; and just a couple of houses on South Highland.” Whitfield said there are trees on West State Street that will have to be removed. “We’re just making it safe today (at 220 W. State) and I’ll get a quote on getting the rest of the trees down,” he said. “They’ll probably be taken down on the next few days. It depends ...

East Midlands Airport has spent a record amount of money soundproofing the homes of Local Residents, reports the Leicester Mercury. Airport bosses handed out 189 grants for double glazing, new doors and loft insulation, coming to £750,000 in total, after people living under the flight paths complained about the noise. Local resident John Poxon was successful in applying for a grant of £2,000 for new doors and windows and believes his standard of living has dramatically improved. "I had put in double glazing a couple of years ago but couldn't afford to do all the house. The money from the airport meant the other bits were done and it has been brilliant since," he told the newspaper. The number of grants distributed has risen by 157 since the scheme was originally introduced. A spokesperson for East Midlands Airport said: "We have increased the grant payments to between £3,000 and £10,000 and we have extended the scheme to make grants available to more people." The grants scheme runs until 2012 when it will be reviewed by East Midlands Airport. ...
