Related Articles Obesity and diabetes epidemics: Cancer repercussions. Adv Exp Med Biol. 2008;630:72-93 Authors: Hjartåker A, Langseth H, Weiderpass E The prevalence of overweight (body mass index, BMI, between 25 and 30 kg/m2) and obesity (BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher) is increasing rapidly worldwide, especially in developing countries and countries undergoing economic transition to a market economy. One consequence of obesity is an increased Risk of developing type II diabetes. Overall, there is considerable evidence that overweight and obesity are associated with Risk for some of the most common cancers. There is convincing evidence of a positive association between overweight/obesity and Risk for adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and the gastric cardia, colorectal Cancer, postmenopausal breast Cancer, endometrial Cancer and kidney Cancer (renal-cell). Premenopausal breast Cancer seems to be inversely related to obesity. For all other Cancer sites the evidence of an association between overweight/obesity and Cancer is inadequate, although there are studies suggesting an increased Risk of cancers of the Liver, gallbladder, pancreas, thyroid gland and in lymphoid and haematopoietic tissue. Far less is known about the association between diabetes mellitus type I (also called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or juvenile diabetes), type II diabetes (called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or adult onset diabetes mellitus) and canc ...

Related Articles Increased childhood Liver Cancer mortality and arsenic in drinking water in northern chile. Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev. 2008 Aug;17(8):1982-7 Authors: Liaw J, Marshall G, Yuan Y, Ferreccio C, Steinmaus C, Smith AH Arsenic in drinking water is an established cause of lung, bladder, and skin cancers in adults and may also cause adult kidney and Liver cancers. Some evidence for these effects originated from region II of Chile, which had a period of elevated arsenic levels in drinking water, in particular from 1958 to 1970. This unique exposure scenario provides a rare opportunity to investigate the effects of early-life arsenic exposure on childhood mortality; to our knowledge, this is the first study of childhood Cancer mortality and high concentrations of arsenic in drinking water. In this article, we compare Cancer mortality rates under the age of 20 in region II during 1950 to 2000 with those of unexposed region V, dividing subjects into those born before, during, or after the peak exposure period. Mortality from the most common childhood cancers, leukemia and brain Cancer, was not increased in the exposed population. However, we found that childhood Liver Cancer mortality occurred at higher rates than expected. For those exposed as young children, Liver Cancer mortality between ages 0 and 19 was especially high: the relative Risk (RR) for males born during this period was 8.9 [95% confidence interval (95% CI), ...

Half of the people do not respond to current cholesterol drugs, but one dose of a new RNAi treatment lowers LDL cholesterol by 60% in mice and monkeys. The Alnylam Pharmaceuticals drug might one day provide another option for patients who are resistant to existing cholesterol-lowering drugs due to genetic factors, or it might also be used in combination with existing cholesterol-lowering drugs to increase their effectiveness. The drug employs an approach known as RNA interference, a principle that is being studied to develop drugs for many diseases, including Cancer. With this technique, scientists create short RNA molecules that bind to messenger RNA in the cell, causing it to self-destruct. That interrupts the process of gene transcription, and thus the synthesis of the proteins coded by the gene. Alnylam's new drug targets an enzyme called PCSK9, previously shown to affect LDL cholesterol levels and Risk of heart disease. PCSK9 is a hot drug target, says Kevin Fitzgerald, Alnylam's director of research. But it's difficult to find small molecules that block the enzyme directly because there's no obvious place for those molecules to bind. The company's findings demonstrate that blocking the production of PCSK9 with RNA interference works in nonhuman primates, and that it's effective in a single dose, says study coauthor Jay Horton, a professor of internal medicine at UT Southwestern who focuses on digestive and Liver diseases. Sunscreens have changed the way Americans play. There was a time when tennis players, golfers, swimmers and just about anyone else who needed to be outside was at the mercy of the sun’s rays. People frequently got bad sunburns or, if they were being prudent, built up a tan gradually in the early summer. Even then, cautious people wore hats and long sleeves if they had to be outside in the middle of the day. Nowadays you could sunbathe in the nude for 8 hours and not turn pink, provided you slathered on the sunscreen every few hours. Most products block the UVB radiation that causes sunburn. The very effectiveness of modern sunscreens, which allow people to spend so much time outdoors, has put them at greater Risk of exposure to UVA radiation. These rays are less likely to burn the skin, but they can cause long-lasting damage leading to premature aging and skin Cancer. Few sunscreens block UVA rays effectively. Perhaps even more disturbing are reports about toxic ingredients in commonly used sunscreens. Oxybenzone, also known as benzophenone-3 (BP-3), is found in hundreds of sunscreens, moisturizers, lip balms, conditioners and anti-wrinkle creams. Animal studies have suggested that oxybenzone may affect the Liver and kidneys. More alarming, though, are reports that this chemical may be a hormone disruptor. There is growing concern that environmental exposure to estrogen-mimicking compounds could alter nervous system development in fetu ...

By Gus Van Horn from Gus Van Horn,cross-posted by MetaBlog An aspect of modern culture I find extremely revolting is the banal negative connotation attached to such terms as "reality". It is as if simply by repeating the lie that that life is inherently unpleasant, one is being unusually perceptive -- ripping the veil of ignorance from the eyes of his audience. For the second-hand mental pygmies of the modern era, it's to metaphysics what wearing a rubber band on one's wrist is to morality: a way to show everyone that you're hip without having to Risk making your head hurt by thinking too much. Libby Purves, writing in The Times of London ("NHS rationing is a reality we should deal with"), assumes this annoying air as she basically tells a nation victimized by socialized medicine that they've no choice but to meekly accept rationing of medical care by the government, along with any life-threatening pettiness it may imply. Not only that, she even verges on reveling in delivering the bad news. (Where have I seen such spiritual indecency before?) So there is already rationing in the NHS. Oh yes, there is, and it isn't going to stop under any government. Some local health trusts won't give you a new knee if you're fat , or IVF if you smoke, or Liver transplants if you drink. Others will. Some defy guidance and go for the latest Cancer drugs, yet have woeful mental health services; some run model services for the elderly but refuse to coun ...
